So is Stadia pretty much dead?

I haven't heard any hype for the product since launch. Does anyone use it?

It was funny to predict Google abandoning Stadia soon after launch but I didn't actually think they'd do it. Although the CEO coming out and saying "I don't play video games" as his first line didn't exactly bode well.

Definitely not dead, but they need to do much better if they want to win the streaming wars.

Has it been supported at least with new games if not features?

Is there any conceivable reason to buy this thing today? I have a big 4K oled in my living room but no room for a console, and a fast internet connection. Stadia theoretically should be right up my alley if it was halfway decent

Once again, for the second time this year: I completely forgot Stadia existed until I see a thread here pop up to remind me it does...

It's probably doing worst than expected but I think it's also a long term play for them. They built studios and it takes many years to get games out of them. They even poached execs from other companies and building them in developer hot spots.

With a new console generation coming and developers not supporting older platforms. Stadia becomes more attractive.

You aren't going to see a lot of hype because the kinds of people who go to IGN, Gamespot, Neogaf, etc. aren't necessarily the kinds of people who would get Stadia. It's like saying that mobile gaming is dead because nobody hypes up the mobile games that make hundreds of millions of dollars.

I didn't buy one but I was definitely interested to see if they could pull off what their marketing pushed. Fire up RDR2 at full 4K/HDR in my living room with no loading? Well sure why not.

It'd be cool if they pulled that off eventually but they haven't shown any interest in communicating at all so It'sDeadJim.

Get xcloud then

Google can't fold on this shit, it's the next YouTube. The technology is slowly improving, and once they nag a good exclusive, they'll pick momentum.

I still believe in them to pull it off, mainly because giving up would be an existential failure in their part which would slowly push them into irrelevancy.

The problem with game streaming is I just don't see how it could ever get to the point where all of your gaming needs can be met.

Try playing a competitive online game of any genre, or even a Souls game or anything that requires specific timings, on a game streaming service. Even in the most optimal of all conditions, the speed of light is what it is. There will always be input lag that makes a huge portion of gaming's best titles unplayable.

Google pretended they had some AI algorithm that they could use to "predict" your next button input to eliminate the lag, but that is some sci-fi fantasy bullshit.

Seems pretty dead in the water to me. Although Risk of Rain 2 just had some timed-exclusive content for Stadia announced, so it seems they are indeed still trying. Kind of makes it even more pitiful.

Good riddance.

Maybe in the next few years they can try it again or maybe just throw it out of the window.

It's not dead, I mean its getting new games (recently Avengers and Soon Cyberpunk 2077) and some exclusives like Gylt and Bomberman are pretty good. I do feel like Xbox have come along and eaten their lunch but there is something in Stadia, it has potential, I've not had a major issue with it really

Don't even see ads for it on YouTube, which I thought was supposed to be their big hook. Like the ideal for Stadia being something like: Streamer plays game > Stadia lets you play it instantly. But forget about that stage, there's not even regular ads.

Would you really play on Stadia over a console?

Like for real?

Depends on the situation really, I have 2 examples to think of:

  • My PC died and I couldn't afford to replace the CPU and Motherboard at the time, so rather than buy the Expansions I was missing for Destiny 2 on PS4, I had them on Stadia already, great for grinding out smaller objectives where MP wasn't a big focus

  • Again, if someone else is using the TV or I'm waiting on Dinner or an appointment, pulling out my phone with a controller is a great way to pass that time
Also for some reason, The Division 2 was super fuzzy on my PC, so I grabbed the Stadia version for like £4 and played it that way instead, its crossplay/progression anyway, they have some good sales from time to time, NBA 2k20, Metro Exodus and Ghost Recon Breakpoint for example only cost me less than £10 altogether, yea they're not on Steam or whatever, but those are games I'll play through once and probably never touch again.

But to answer your question, no I wouldn't and fully plan on buying a PS5, Xbox Series X and possibly a 3080

Xcloud is launching again tomorrow so I've yet to compare it but I did compare the previous xcloud (along with remote play from ps4 pro, GFN, xbox console streaming) with Stadia and Stadia was always the best.

Most reliably responsive.

Without Stadia we wouldn't even have xbox on phones so I think its good.
