So, is Yooka-Laylee good or not?

Huge fan of the old banjo games, and had a lot of fun with yooka, totally scratched that itch.

Gonna replay it when i get my switch copy, and the new update makes things great

It's a pretty average game, but 3d platformer fans will get more out of it than most.

The majority of objectives are pretty uninspired, but you do have the occasional really fun page to collect and unfortunately the occasional terrible mission (I'm looking at you Kartos). On whole I don't think the game suffers as much from the Banjo Tooie "comeback when you have X skill" because there's only about 5 levels and acquiring skills is usually the first thing you do when you enter a stage, but it definitely is one of those games where you'll wondering around aimlessly trying to figure out what to do for certain missions.. But, as others have said, the levels can be somewhat overly large and overly empty with what they do with that space. Likewise, I don't feel like I was ever surprised to see find anything in each of the levels; they feel like somewhat toned versions of 3d collectable worlds. In Banjo Kazooie for example, many of the levels featured big characters or centerpieces that made portions of the level really interesting. I haven't had that feeling with any of the levels in this game.

It's good, and I don't regret paying the $16 I paid for it. It accomplishes what it sets out to be: make a 3d platformer that emulates the style and feel of old rare 3d platformers. It just doesn't reach the heights of those games, never less excel them.

I heard bad things, then finally tried it on PC.A little rough in spots, but ultimately decent with potential.

I think the Switch version will be better refined and the latest updates seem to suggest that. I'm buying it on the Switch and I know I'll like it.

It's fun and nostalgic and I would recommend it. It has tons of excessive and confusing backtracking and really, really annoying bosses though.

As a platformer fan, I backed YL and somewhat enjoyed it but it's definitely a disappointment. Some basics weren't done properly (bad camera placement and movement, generally unresponsive controls, difficult calculations of landings, questionable level design etc.). Sadly, I think it deserves the mediocre ratings it received.

i legitimately dont understand people who say the controls arent as good as Banjo. Its not fun lining up high jumps with no air control in Kazooie, and Banjo has no consistency to his "feel". Is he big and lumbering or light as a feather? Who knows, it changes depending on the move!
I know right? when the movement and jumping of Yooka comes under fire especially with comparison to Rare's previous work I feel bamboozled.

It's so-so.

For context, Banjo Kazooie 1 is probably my all time favorite game but I don't have much love for any of the other Rare platformers (Tooie was just too large, Donkey Kong 64 I enjoyed as a Blockbuster rental, and I never got far in Conker). There's just something about BK that just had the perfect mix of everything for me: great levels, incredibly catchy music (still hum it to this day), fun overworld to explore, satisfying sound effects, and very solid gameplay.

Looka Laylee started out great, the basic movement and gameplay feels really good, the graphics are bright and colorful, and the music is solid (it's basically just more Banjo music, so it doesn't end up being as catchy IMO). And the first level was very solid too, it was a good size (not too huge like Tooie), it was very open and easy to navigate and the Pagies were fun to find.

But after that I started to like it less. The snow level was the kind of stuff I didn't like in Tooie, with a less intuitive layout that takes a while to get your bearings. And it has a lot of objectives that aren't clear right away (snowmen needing hats, but not seeing any hats anywhere near, stuff like that), or were just more annoying than they were fun (a castle you need to memorize which doors go where, and a cave with very difficult traversal that I think I might need to come back to with a later power). The only other level I've gotten to is the Swamp, which isn't bad, but thematically I don't like it nearly as much as the Swamp or the Halloween levels in BK, which it took a lot of inspiration from).

And the overworld in the game hasn't been the easiest to navigate. The newest patch was suppose to add signs or something to help guide you better which might fix my complaint, but at release it was just kind of confusing, where I didn't know which level I had to find in order to get the power I needed to continue. And the level entrances are just in random places with their theme being lazily added to a small area around them (some snow next to the snow level, pillars or plants next to the aztec level, pumpkins or something next to the swamp.

I stopped playing when I heard the patch was being worked on and I'm sure I'll get back to it eventually, but it wasn't the triumphant return to Banjo Kazooie 1 that I was hoping for (I didn't have any expectations that it would be as amazing as BK, but I hoped it would get closer than it did).

No, as much as i wanted to love it, i much prefer banjo kazooie and the 3d mario games, it took from the school of banjo tooie and dk 64. The bigger the better mentality and in this case bigger meant a ton of empty space and vapid, boring things to do in them.

As someone who recently bought the game on sale on PS4, I am absolutely baffled at how bad and unresponsive the controls are. Even simple tasks are maddeningly frustrating to pull off. That's not to even bring up the camera issues which only adds to the problem.

I love 3D platformers so much, and I really wanted to give this game the benefit of the doubt...but it's fucking bad. There's no other way to put it.

It's not terrible, it's not great. Largely, for me, the level design was boring and I'm not a fan of needing future items to complete an area of a level inaccessible until then.

It's decent. Not perfect but not a failure either. It also seems to be made by a team who are eager to take criticism and fix the game up accordingly. That attitude makes me excited for their next project, should they make one.

It's got issues but I can't even call it a flawed masterpiece either, unfortunately.

I appreciate the effort to fix the small nitpicks but the level design is the real issue here.

...that having been said it's not a bad game. I really did enjoy it, but I'm a fan of the genre. Had we had 6-7 levels of half the size, the game would have been better off than with the 5 levels of gargantuan proportions that we got.

I posted a fairly in-depth "review"/analysis on my WordPress blog, for those who might be interested. I'm a bit critical on the game, but I did it out of my love for the game/genre. Feel free to give it a read and I'd appreciate any feedback!

Yooka-Laylee impressions!

If you liked Banjo Kazooie you will enjoy Yooka.
I loved it, I just need to 100% the last level for the platinum :D
Also, I really hated the reviews for this game. The game was made for the fans and thanks to the fans. The game delivers EVERYTHING and more than Playtonic promised. It's an old style platformer. Reviews were really stupid thinking about Yooka as a new game with modern standards.

Gotta say, though, the Rextro arcade games are unfiltered, hateful garbage. How hard would it be to make some fake little classic arcade clones of games like Asteroids, Galaga, Frogger, whatever? Instead they use the in-game engine to make you play some arbitrary bullshit that doesn't resemble anything retro or arcade in the slightest. They all control so poorly and are black hole vacuums for fun. I'd rather there were nothing there. They actively detract from the game.

If you like the Banjo-Kazooie games, odds are you'll like this game. It's not really bad so much as it really needed another year of refinement.

Thankfully, unlike Mighty Number 9, Playtonic seems to be listening and providing plenty of patches and updates.

It's a lesser version of Banjo, which was a lesser version of Mario 64. They didn't aim all that high and still missed the mark.

I didn't like it from what I played.
