So, Lean On is the Hit of the Summer, Right?

sure i guess we should all wear headdresses randomly and put henna on because its the new it thing

plus it's reductive

I also think the summer song might be Cool For The Summer: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hq935KorD88 or Freedom.

Never heard it.

Generic as fuck though, can't believe this has so many hits and is considered as a summer jam. Music has fallen off hard in the past 10 years.

u can wear it but dont treat it like a costume, so preferably you only wear it in setting where the marginalized population has oversight on how they want it depicted

also unless i see one of the women in that video having producer credits for the video then no, thats not a setting they have control in because they're hired hands and have to comply what the director wants

Here you go. Dance choreographer for the video is Paresh Shirodkar, along with his team

From his Facebook:

Pls Watch My first Choreographed International Music Video... Major Lazer & DJ Snake - Lean On (feat. MO) ... was great working wid these guys.. Thankss for loving me, my team and my work..

Seriosly, I'm biracial, I don't mind at all when people enjoy my cultures and participate in it. These guys didn't shoot this video in a studio in Burbank, they went to India, worked with local dancers, and wanted to give back for all the love they got on tour from the country. I see no problems.

Was the director indian though? I can't abide this video unless the director was also Indian

This is cultural appropriation at its most strongest

Smh at this joke debate

Peoples pls, I won't accept your 500k play song as the song of the summer compared to one that has hundreds of millions. Unless you're explicitly talking about personal preference.

I also think that Lean On is much more globally successful. For stuff like Trap Queen, though successful, it's very much dominated by the US. Lean On was at or near the top of the charts all over the world.

I mean, look at this.

I have no idea what that song is or who 99% of the musicians in here are.

I will return to my fedora shop now and pretend none of this exists again.

That's weird. Judging by your avatar one would think that you at least had some level of knowledge, or even interest, in an artist like Major Lazer.

The only good summer songs (that didn't make me want to kill myself after hearing them 100th time) I heard in the radio on a 700 mile drive last week were that Carly Rae Jepsen song and the Chemical Brothers song.

Sorry, no, never heard of him. Just listened to the song and found it unbearable. I don't like singing very much at the best of times (prefer instrumental or bands where the singer isn't the main focus)

I'm currently listening to the Greenskeepers and Burial, they're my soundtrack to this summer.

Blow a kiss, fire a gun
We need someone to lean on
Blow a kiss, fire a gun
All we need is somebody to lean on
Blow a kiss, fire a gun
We need someone to lean on

All we need is somebody to lean on

Explain how it's generic, or just show us a song that's like it.

- 4-on-the-floor dance beat
- house keyboard stabs
- playground chorus
- cut-voice sample breakdown
- "hey" sample

It's not bad, but it is rather formulaic.

The slight reggae/dub groove gives it a nice summer feel though.

Time to cut off your cock & balls, go listen to 1930s elevator music, move to a nursing home, and actually feel proud that you haven't heard a song that literally hundreds of millions other people have heard, call it generic, and utter that music used to be better, accordingly.

It sounds alright, but I'm not a fan of the singer. The music video is weirdly uncomfortable to watch too.

I'm a bigger fan of the Weeknd's new tracks, the Hills or Can't Feel My Face. But to be honest, I haven't listened to the radio in years so I can't really judge what "song of summer" they're overplaying. I can only judge it by the music I hear in bars.

That's extremely reductive. It does many unusual and unique things. Maybe you didn't listen closely.

Diplo is a cunning experimental artist working alongside a handful of cutting edge producers, but with overarching pop sensibilities. Lean On is based on a Jr. Blender (Trinidadian producer) instrumental that is in the moombahton style (reggae infused house music).

Nothing wrong with that. It's a pop song. People like it. It's very popular.

Yeah I have some old Diplo, like his jazzier stuff though.

I guess that Casio drum sample is STILL around. It's been like what? 5 years or so where every "hitsong" is using it?

Nah I'm just saying it's a HUGE popular song with MANY fans. Defense force is unnecessary.
The popularity of the song is irrelevant -- or should be, at least. In a vacuum I'm defending the claim that it is generic. Well, yes, it has generic elements which make up the foundation of many popular songs (repetition, a walking beat, and vocals in a verse-chorus structure). The same can be said of Michael Jackson and The Beatles. I actually find the song to be highly innovative, with its reggae influences (especially the fourth-degree harmonies and the clacking triplet-rhythmic hi-hats), and the unusual phrasing of the chorus lyrics.

To be accurate, I said formulaic. I couldn't begin to describe what "generic" is. I mean, there is a formula, isn't there?
I enjoy the song for what it is. I don't hate it or anything.
