I just think it's hilarious that this guy has a working cell phone but is begging for money. At my one job, much of the clientèle is comprised of low-income families, and we have to periodically call everybody. It always sounds like a long, lengthy process, but really it doesn't take long because they NEVER have a working phone, EVER. Which, I mean, is understandable, they're totally low-income (black & white, just to throw race in the mix, I'm sure it'll go over well). But this guy had a working phone! That's like the people you hear about that beg for a living in NYC and make tens of thousands a year doing so.

the OP was not racist at all, he's certainly concerned for his wife... but to all the people quick to defend "details," race was only mentioned in reference to the aggressor, not the victim, so is it really important?

solidliquid,

unfortunately, he really didn't do anything illegal... the cops aren't incompetent, there's really nothing more they can do.

I understand, and look I actually feel really bad for this guy. I'm sitting in my comfy office wearing my shirt and tie tapping away at the keyboard, a cup of cool punch sitting on my desk. This dude is probably on the street, hungry and dirty. I feel for him I really do. I work with many people like him as well as prisoners in a medical prison near here trying to make their lives a little better.

I'm really pissed however at the owner of the gas station. He should have called the cops.

no need to feel bad for the guy...

yeah, owner and other customers were pretty deplorable for not caring about someone obviously scared for their own safety.

Solideliquid said:
Again I wasn't there but please she wouldn't have called the cops if this was just a homeless guy rudely asking for money. He actually threatened her and tried to open the car door after he spied her purse sitting in the passenger seat.

My opinion of what happened is that this guy wasn't prepared to physically attack anyone and at the point where his verbal assault hadn't worked the only thing to do is run away or go to the next level. I think what happened there was he used his cell phone ringing as an excuse to get away without losing face (or running away like the mangy coward he is).
Again I wasn't there so I can only go by what she tells me. Yes it's possible that some of these events didn't exactly happen as I describe, but since she was very stressed and into the flight or fight response it is possible that not every detail is as she remembers in reality. This happens all the time in these situations, be them crimes or car accidents.

Solideliquid said:
Stop instigating this crap and inflamming the thread. The most she'd have done was spray the guy with pepper spray if she had any on her.

Why? Because it's probably true that your wife is a biased reporter? I wouldn't even be all that surprised if she sprinkled in a few fabricated details about the aggressiveness of the "mugger" so her reaction would seem more reasonable to you. People do that kind of thing all the time.

It's cute how you take the word of your wife over the police officers, the gas station attendant and every one else at the gas station who might have witnessed what was happening or heard the commotion. I won't even mention the absurdity of someone trying to rob someone at a well attended gas station in broad daylight. If your wife had a legitimate complaint the police would have arrested the guy even if only for disorderly conduct. I just think it's funny that for all the dramatisation in the story, the guy didn't even attempt to physically attack your wife when it isn't too far of a stretch to assume he was fully capable of doing so. I live in a city that has a lot of homeless people and in some of my interactions with them, I've been physically attacked or grabbed for refusing to give them money (keep in mind that I'm a teenager). I put things in perspective and apply what I would have done had I been in your wife's situation. While I can't really fault your wife for reacting that way if she was truly frightened, there is something to be said for being sheltered to the point where you would think you were in imminent danger in such a situation.

Did I mention that the guy was "African American?"

This entire post a a complete waste of everyone's time.

On a lighter note, I told my brother what happened he said she should go out at night, find him and go all out "Christian Bale" on his ass and his dog.

You can't provide a counter-point to anything that I said so you choose to ignore the obvious truth of the matter.

LOL, your wife is stupid.

I guarantee you, I would get the chair for this woman.

From Dog Lovers everywhere:

But going American Psycho on this guy is a great idea.

GAF never ceases to amaze me. At least there are some level headed people in here but when a guy is just concerned for his wife and includes a detail about the race of the suspect, (It was referred to in the most off-hand manner too) and some people blow up like the guy a few posts above it really is pretty sad. It's even sadder when I read posts in other threads like this such as "was he black?" which just shows the levels of hypocrisy here.

If he is that bad, why doesnt he get a job? I mean, there are a lot of jobs out there that people just wont accept because they arent "dignifying".

I say to gather a group of people and just beat the $$#" out of him. Next time he might just try to rape your wife, would you feel sorry for him then?

"Poor guy, doesn't get laid very often".

There are no excuses. I know i might sound harsh, but there are construction workers that work they're ass out just to make some money. Everyone is capable of doing that!

And yes, the owner of the gas station should get fired or something. Hate people that just stare and watch...

And i don't think the OP is being racist. For gods sake, everything is an excuse for racism nowadays...this isn't 1800 you know?

The PC-Crowd is such bullshit.

Who fucking cares if he mentioned the guy was black? If he mentioned he was white, no one would give a shit, so why the double standard?

No, let's sugar-coat every detail so no one comes out offended. Jesus.

Fucking sad that had to happen. It scares me to think of my fiancee in this situation but I could see her screaming for him to fuck off and go away and yell for help. He should at least get arrested for harassment and attempted robbery!

On the positive side:

Yesterday I was pumping gas when a short little Jewish woman came up to me with an oxygen tank and tubes going in her nose. She was carrying a small gas can and said she had been in the ER in Gainesville and was on her way to Palatka, but didn't have enough gas to make it. So I turned around and gave her $5 worth in her little can.

There, a happier story.

Wait, am I racist for saying she was Jewish?

Why don't we just replace the words "black" "African" and "African-American" with "..."?

"The suspect is described as being in his early 20's, tall and [pause]."

nope, just gullible for giving her wine money...

:lol The funny thing is, while filling it up I looked her up and down and was like "damn, if this is some kind of con to try and get gas in this expensive day and age, it's really fucking elaborate".

riding the nyc subways, i can tell you i have never ever given money to someone asking for it.
if i was in this situation, i would have told him to fuck off and get a job

Feel bad? Fuck him. He's most likely homeless because he's a lazy bum loser who didn't want to work like everyone else has to.

And I :lol ... you all are so damn sensitive to race. Christ.

Let's hope the next woman he assaults is married to a UFC champion, and the survaillence tape ends up on youtube somehow.

I just read the story. I am really glad your wife is OK. This has to have your stomach in knots.

P.S. Next time tell your wife to douse the guy with gas.:D

Sorry about what happened to your wife. If that shit happened to my wife, the police would be the LEAST of this motherfucker's concerns. Black or white he would be perforated when I finished with him.

Here's a link to a related story that happened in Cincinnati this year.

Police say a Cincinnati woman shot a homeless man over a quarter.

It happened late Monday night outside the Marathon gas station at Eighth and Linn streets.

Witnesses tell 911 operators that Donald francis was just standing next to Geraldine Beasley.

911 tape:

"This homeless man was right there, asking a lady for some change and she just pulled out a gun and said, don't [expletive] with me and she shot him in the [expletive] face."

Go and watch the documentary Oasis and you'll see that not everyone has a choice, not everybody has the same luck as you may have had. Look past their attitude for once, and realize their not so different from you and I.

Or no sex for you.

She could have said green martians came down with tutus on and tapioca diaphragms in, and he better damn well believe it!

It makes sense to me; if the wife had been panhandled by a white guy she might not have come home crying and wanting to put the dude in jail.

See guys, it provides context, but you have to read between the lines.

not everyone is as unsheltered as you.. go on with your bad self

if I had a wife, she would have, in one smooth motion,

pulled out the gas pump with her right hand spraying the asshole with gas then with her left hand,
reach in her pocket and pull out a lighter, light it and throw at the dripping douche
all while putting the the pump back in its holster, put the gascap back on and then hop in the car and leave while he burns.. if she smoked, she would have lit it off of him

PC/Bleeding Heart GAF blows. If it hurts you all so much inside get off your computer and go do something about it.

Post a thread with pictures of you working in a soup kitchen or a methadone clinic or helping and spending time with these people. Your words are cheap.

The guys wife was close to being assaulted by some black guy. A venom laced statement from my obviously racist tongue if ever there was one.:lol

I realize that there are exceptions, but I am and will always be of firm belief in self responsibility, and making proper decisions for your future as soon as your able to think for yourself.

And careful with the word "LUCK" here. Almost insulting. I had to go thru a lot of shit in my life to get where I'm at, while others were having a grand ol' time. Life is a series of decisions and sacrifices that you make, each affects the next. Luck is winning random numbers on a scratch off ticket.

Last, there are some respectable homeless people that don't rob innocent people. Those are the ones I will lend benefit of doubt to. Not some dirty man who tried to rob a woman. Most likely, that might say something about that person's past?

My wife decided to drive my car to work today instead of her own. It's a VW Touareg and her care is a jetta. On the way to work she stops for gas, and this particular gas station though is the closest to our house always seemed a little sketchy to me. I've told her my opinion of this gas station many a time.

Anyway so she is standing there filling up gas, and this african american walks over and says to her "Do you have any cash?" She says "no, sorry I don't have any money on me". At this point he looks at the car and leans up against it, and says "yes you have some cash, you can't be driving a car this nice and not have any cash".

So she replied "sorry again I don't have any money please leave me along". So here is the part where the situation escalates.. he gets an angry look on his face and starts yelling at her and using hand gestures "give me your fucking money!!" and at that point, he sees her purse on the passanger seat and attempts to open the door. The car is locked so thankfully he couldn't get inside or I'm sure he would have taken her purse, which contained wallet credit cards, and an iphone. At this point my wife has already put the pump back before he started talking and is stepping back she looks around and notices that while there are many other people around pumping gas no one appears to try helping. She even makes eye contact with the attendant in his booth through the glass but he did not call 911 or come out to see what was going on. She begins to shout for help as this guy starts reaching into his pocket. At that moment HIS cell phone rings and he turns around to answer it. While he does this she runs around to the driver side jumps into the car, re-locks her door and quickly drives away.

She fills out a police report and later the cops call her and say they drove to the gas station and found the guy still hanging out there. Since he didn't assault her or steal anything they only told him that he is banned from coming to this gas station.

WTF - is there anything else we can do? I called our local news channel to tell them about the story and hopefully they will run a story about it. I mean you can get stabbed by some homeless crazy and the gas station clerk will watch you bleed out and not even call the cops. People need to know about this shit. This happened in Georgia BTW (not Atlanta).

So you think the guy should have been arrested for yelling at your wife and intimidating her? Should you be arrested for yelling at her when you two have an argument?
Does she carry any pepper spray?
As far as the gas station goes, do not stop there anymore, the guy may hang out there looking for easy prey to get free money from via intimidation. The other people and the attendant may be used to him.
If someone pulls a weapon, I give them what I have. If they are rude and loud, I ignore them. And I have pepper spray in my pocket if I need it if I'm in an area where these kind of confrontations may happen.

is this story real?

he sees the purse in the car and doesnt try to smash the window, and then ANSWERS HIS CELLPHONE WHILE MUGGING HER?

he's a pretty shitty criminal, must have a real job to pay that cellphone bill...

and i'm totally not offended by someone saying 'african american' since that term excludes me, while the term 'black' includes everyone else too, not just AA's
