So my wife went to see a psychic...

As skeptical as I am of psychic powers or whatever as well, I wish everyone were more open minded. Blind certainty is so depressing.

I'd go in with an open mind and see what the results are. We can be put off by the reality personalities and late night scammers that proclaim powers that they do not posses. It's just an instance of the worst people diluting the water for everyone.

the dream is about to end/start op

That's the crazy thing man, it was only < 5 minutes and my wife didn't even give her a name.

Like, I can understand certain coincidences or generic statements that one can perceive and fill in the blanks to create a reality, but she gave specific names.

She pinpointed California instead of just saying something generic like "I see travel in your future" and she pinpointed Patrice instead of just saying "There is someone giving you shit at work".

It was only $2 and like I said, I'm a supporter of local businesses and I don't mind throwing them a few dollars.

Ill tell you this, there are just some things that cant be explained in this world and that my friend would be one of them.

sometimes psychic shit happens, like you'll know what someone is thinking or about to say before they even say it. How useful is it? Not at all, because there is little control over the process and the signal to noise ratio is insane.

so unless they gave you winning lottery numbers, don't pay too much attention to it. it's an imprecise art that may never develop beyond that.

You mean coincidences? Yes, that happens a lot.

go back to her and tell her you know how to make an easy million in exchange for a cut. i believe you have potentially found the first and only psychic who can demonstrate their psychic ability under scientific test conditions. you're welcome op.

Open minded doesn't mean gullible. Psychics and other similar charlatans have had ample time, opportunity, and motive to prove that they're the real deal, and yet every single time they've tried they've failed, every single one of them. Not believing in psychics isn't closed minded, it's just accepting reality as it is after gathering the relevant evidence and testing it.

There is a psychological component to the 'mind readers' as well. They can easily fall into the metaphysical trap, and actually believe that their ability is psychic.

However, it is a skill that anybody can learn, and it relies on statements that seem personal but are true of most people, reading behavior, dress, accent, speech patterns, and most importantly on gaining compliance from the mark. It is a game of making high probability guesses that seem specific, and relying on our innate desire to find patterns, make connections to what is being said.

That's very unscientific to jump to the conclusion that ESP is responsible for those moments.

I forget who it is, but some researcher has a million dollar prize if a psychic can show off their powers in a lab setting

I'll let you guess if anyone has passed the test.

Hey, it will almost be like you have psychic powers when you guess correctly!

So I talked to my wife again and she said that she felt that the first part, she could have gotten through inference but the last part about Patrice is what really threw her off and surprised her.

The first thing she said to my wife is that she's a teacher.

But my wife said she was fumbling through her bag looking for another dollar. I checked my wife's bag and it wasn't her work bag so it didn't have any school ID in there, just a bag for my daughter's portable toilet seat, some kleenex, and a "Dance Stop" sweatshirt for my daughter.

Maybe she very quickly saw something in my wife's wallet when she opened it to take out a bill?

The second part, she asked if something was pulling my wife and I apart. She asked to see a picture of me. My wife says that this part is likely based on inference but this is the part where she was able to deduce that I travel a lot and work across the country in California. But even my wife says she can see how she could maybe figure this out because she started with the "pulling us apart" bit, asked if it was work related (common, I guess), asked if I travel a lot, but was able to nail the California part.

The third part is what my wife says really baffles her because again, she asked about someone causing her grief at work and said she saw a name "Patrice...Patty". And indeed, her co-worker's name is Patrice ("but everyone calls her Patty" -- my wife). And indeed, she has been causing my wife a bit of grief.

The first two, now that I have the full story again, I could see maybe she picked up if she was super observant. Maybe she saw an ID the moment my wife pulled open her wallet. Maybe she saw CA or California somewhere on my wife's phone when she pulled it out since it may be on her calendar.

That last part is still baffling me a bit.

How old is your wife?

My mum took me to see a medium or whatever fairly soon after my grandad died, as she'd gone before and claimed this woman had communicated with him in the spirit world. I wasn't very enthused as I don't believe in that kind of stuff, but I begrudgingly went just to please my mum. I didn't really know what to expect, but she did say a lot of things that surprised me.

She said I've always had troubles with my chest and breathing, that I'm quite uncomfortable breathing through my nose which is true. She said that's because I was an American soldier in Vietnam in a previous life and an explosion in my chest had killed me. She said I had a fear of fighting in a war, which is true as I have an irrational fear of being drafted into a WWII situation. She went on to say I had strong connections with the US (I'm British, and had never been to the states at that time), especially California (I was pretty close to a girl there online at that time) so that kinda stuff was quite cool.

She also said I liked cheese (very broad statement), she mentioned a watch with a brown strap which didn't relate to anything and very quickly changed the subject, and claimed I had a fear of dogs (the opposite is true). These were explained by her that other spirits come in and out sometimes, and some like to cause mischief, obviously.

So all in all, I was pretty impressed by what she said and how she told me these things, but I'm skeptical and there's probably an explanation for how she lead to those things. Fun experience though, but it did come with a hefty price tag of about £50 (I wasn't paying so whatever).

I also asked my wife how she showed the pictures. My thinking being that if she showed them via Facebook or something, there may have been a hint there that she could pick up if she were really perceptive. But she showed it through her gallery on her phone.

Yeah I know about that.

I helped take care of a lot of autistic children with a lot of special talents that I can't explain, like this one kid...animals were drawn to him. One time we went to the zoo and these little kids who were probably on a field trip or something were all up against the glass at the gorilla exhibit, our kid --- yanked one of the kids out of place and took it over lol, but the gorilla who had been in the corner with his back turned to everyone like leave me tf alone immediately turned and came up and put his hands on the glass where ---'s were. Everyone was freaking out. He was just laughing and loving it. And animals just always loved to come up to him and show him love. Anyways. I don't know about seeing the future or bending spoons, but I don't think its impossible and I do believe in super empathy. Idk. Humans can do crazy shit.

Age was to see how popular the name Patrice was the year your wife was born.

Common psychic tactic.

As someone's who's worked in the field of autism for about a decade now, and 1:1 with over 40 kids, I've never witnessed anything like that

Also, please edit your post and remove that child's name.

I forget who it is, but some researcher has a million dollar prize if a psychic can show off their powers in a lab setting

The Amazing Randi One Million Dollar Paranormal Challenge

Established in 1964 (at $1000)

Winners to date: 0

edit: Oh my goodness, how did I miss this applicant

Rosemary Hunter has applied for the Challenge, media presence requirement included, with the extraordinary claim that she can make people urinate themselves with the power of her mind.

I never believed in such things.

But the day that I met a medium and told my secrets like she knew all along...

Which I never told another soul about it and only I knew them.

So there's people that have these special gifts and can read you like a book quite literally.

Either by reading your thoughts or communicating spiritually.

I'm glad this real psychic is working for peanuts at a fair rather than using her talents to amass lots of money to invest in worthwhile charitable projects or preventing disasters or whatever.

An actual psychic would totally be working at a fair.

Wasn't even a fair, yo. Just a weekend farmer's market with like, a dozen vendors and some live music.

Your wife made it all up to try and push you into the move.

I dunno man, my wife doesn't really want to move because all of her family and friends are here. Up until a few years ago, she had never flown anywhere and was deathly afraid of flying.

Does the city you live in have a T in the name? Will you be moving to Torrence?

No, it would be Irvine/OC area.

Age was to see how popular the name Patrice was the year your wife was born.

Common psychic tactic.

Patty is much older. My wife is the youngest in her office.

Dude come on, your wife is clearly exaggerating some of this. You know psychics aren't real, but based off a cold read that you didn't even hear you're suddenly shaken to the core? Calm down, give it a day, and start thinking realistically about this. Even if this psychic didn't want fame, if she were this good, and able to pull precise, don't you think there'd be even one article written about her? Rumors from your friends about the crazy accurate psychic? Instead there's nothing, and all you have is someone who was well cold read probably exaggerating what happened.

Could have been a quick lead in question.

Conflict? Obvious guess.

Someone older? Kinda obvious. Your wife is younger and they tend to clash with the old folks

Patty? Shot in he dark lucky guess because it just sounds like an old broad

Boom. Explained.

Unfortunately they never seem able to read the mind of someone applying the scientific method to test their claims.

As for the OP, i don't want to sound like an asshole man, but if you weren't even there with her, we're getting a 3rd hand story here.
I wouldn't be surprised if some game of telephone was (unintentionally or otherwise) going on here, about her pinpoint accuracy and her inability to cold-read your wife.

And I'm supposed to believe you why?

Why would OP lie? This isn't the internet or reddit where people get popular by making outrageous claim. GAF is and has always been above that shit.

OP, I believe you. Thank you for sharing.

BEWARE: Make it clear this is not a relationship thread since you mentioned your wife or White Man is going to ask for proof of the psychic and the last thing you want to have to do is drive back to the fair and take a picture with the psychic holding a white piece of paper with your gaf user name on it just to keep from getting banned.

Unfortunately they never seem able to read the mind of someone applying the scientific method to test their claims.

In Randi's case, I believe some have claimed he's actually a powerful psychic himself, and that's why nobody's won the money. He's so powerful he turns off their energies! :O

Honestly, your secrets aren't that personal or original. Someone that knows how to read people, lead them down certain paths, and extract information from individuals when they don't even know they are giving information would easily be able to tell you all of your secrets- or say them in such a vague way it sounds like they know.

How could anyone prove they had psychic powers like these anyways, if evidence would imply concrete impossibility of inference or guessing? Out of curiosity?

That sounds really interesting tbh.Can you tell us more what happened ?

Yeah psychics are really just great perspective takers and manipulators. There's really not much more to it than that.

Common psychic tactic.

Patty works well cause it could be Patrice, Patricia or Patrick as well, and it is a common enough name that you probably know one or two. When it does miss you can recover with Pauline or Paul pretty easily.
