So Persona 1 and 2

Still can't believe Atlus didn't localize the PSP port of Eternal Punishment.

My understanding was that it wasn't a question of them not wanting to do it, but there being a reason they couldn't. But yeah, it's a hugely unfortunately hole that will forever suck for existing.

Dantis stop being wrong

Not only is Persona's 1 OST fantastic, it's far more thematically relevant than P1P's soundtrack. P1P's soundtrack barely suits the game's tone and atmosphere

Shit, P1P has even less songs in addition to being worse (RIP character themes)

And this is coming from someone who really enjoyed P1P's soundtrack

Didn't mention P1P, but P1's soundtrack is still garbage.

It's very... experimental?

A former staff member of Atlus USA hinted that the reason why EPP didn't get a translation is apparently so absurd that nobody would believe it if they actually came out and said it.

They're great game they're not directed at the otaku/anime fanbase like the Hashino persona games are and because of it they get a bad reception from the recent persona fans.

The first three Persona games are all great, people call Persona 1 dated and I disagree with them. Persona 1 is a unique RPG, I don't think thers's a single game that people can use to compare the game. How many games are a first person dungeon crawler in dungeons, isometric out of dungeons, and have a SRPG-lite battle system?

You'll find the classic games still have very devout defenders, it's just easy to miss due to how overwhelmingly popular 3 & 4 are.

I vastly prefer P1's OST to the remake, and both the original games have a massive variety of music that puts 3 and 4's to shame in terms of sheer breadth(despite varying quality as a result).

As for art, subjective, but some amazing stuff has come from the P1/2 era:

Fixed.

There is a difference and it's surprisingly important when thinking about what is "owned" by whom.

I don't think the in-game art worked very well for P1, but its promotional art is wonderful, and Kaneko's designs (especially Persona and boss designs) are some of his best, absolutely breath taking.

Yamaoka tho, lmao, the best.

Er.... I'm not so sure that holds up? Atlus stuff from the 90s was pretty much the essential 90s sci-fi anime style, at least so far as theme goes. Kaneko's art is unmistakably unique, but Persona 2 went with other artists to redo his art for the ingame work so.... : \

Also, as far as "Hashino Persona Games" go, there is at least some evidence to suggest that Persona 3 attracted a crowd outside the usual fanbases. A big deal was made about the Persona 3 movies attracting audiences who hadn't played the game, and were majorly women:

The entire film received an advanced midnight screening on November 16, 2013 at the Shinjuku Wald 9 cinema in Shinjuku, Tokyo ahead of its November 23 release.During its release weekend, the film mostly attracted a young audience ranging from teenagers to those in their early thirties. Among this demographic, males were outnumbered by females at a ratio of 2:3 which suggested that the original game itself was mostly popular among women. In addition a significant number of patrons who were not familiar with the game were also present during the release weekend.

And I don't think I'd call Persona 1 "SRPG Lite", the grid system wasn't great even back when the game came out. Hence why they removed it for Persona 2. =P

@cj iwakura: You can definitely see Kaneko's art moving in a new direction to what we see in P2 concept onwards, P1's art feels like a transition period in his artwork from his old SMT phase to the way he would later do his colouring and shading work; previously, his work was very 80s anime and colourful, then became very gothic and dark. His work on Soul Hackers also showed a transitionary change in art style. By the time the PS2 generation rolled around his art style has changed rather dramatically from previously (my favourite era of his work, art direction firing on all cylinders and his art style finally refined, love it or hate it). God, I love Kaneko's artwork (of all eras), proud owner of 3 of his art books.

For Gungnir, they had a deal with Sting. As for Growlanser, I guess they wanted to give it a shot. They cut all of the VA to save budget, and it tanked, so I hope everyone is happy.

I know that I am since Growlanser IV is one of my favourite Atlus games and possibly my favourite game on PSP. Fantastic game. Gungnir was a really solid game too. I supported them both when they came out day one.

1&2&2 are closer to the the original shin series where they still have e a good story but are focused on fighting and negotiations with demons. Very dungeon crawling feel with story in-between fights.

3&4 dropped some of those features and mixes story and fighting. Characters are further developed through social links. You also do stuff outside of fighting like roam the city, go to school, hangout with friends, dates..etc. fighting is more streamlined but still carry the shin difficulty.

1 is not the easiest to play by today standards. 2 is good but you encounter enemies at a higher rate than you would catch a cold stuck in a quarantined room.

3 is still dark like the previous games. The main dungeon can get a little boring as everything looks somilar.

4 really lightened the mood and is the friendliest looking game out of all the shin series

I'm happy, but they did a terrible job marketing it. They barely even tried. So I'm not surprised. Localizing the first game would have been smarter.

1 and 2 are much closer to the mainline SMT series and 3 and 4. As such I personally greatly prefer 1 and 2 to 3 and 4, but understand why that isn't the case for everyone.

I found P2:IS was pretty damn close to P3/4 in terms of being a quirky high school "world saving" adventure that carries some dark themes on the fringes. Despite its brooding "deep red" aesthetic and moody title screen imagery, it's more Saturday morning cartoon than thought provoking or interesting. Outside of the ending being more clever than the narrative throughline deserved, I just don't see what GAF has for this outside of sticking it to P3 or P4.

P2:IS is also the worst RPG I have ever played from a design and mechanical standpoint. The pacing of battle, the tarot system, the randomized and illogical negotiations, I mean even P1p wasn't nearly as insufferable comparatively. I could never bother playing Eternal Punishment given how much I despised playing P2:IS.

Persona 1 is okay, but battles take forever, are frequent, and probably occupy 75% of game time. The rest of that time is spent traversing very bland dungeons (imagine a single wall and floor tile for 3-8 hours). Yes, the final dungeon took me something like 8 hours.

Persona 2, however is amazing. Specifically innocent sin. Innocent Sin is not only a great game, but it's completely bananas in a way that is fun and makes sense within its world. It easily falls within my top ten.

Right now I'm trying to give eternal punishment a second chance, because "deja vu" wasn't quite enough for me to find some of the recycled content inspiring and silencing Maya has me now firmly opposed to the silent character.

Persona 2 would probably be my favourite RPG of all time if the gameplay wasn't so shit.

It has the best storyline in any RPG I've played with an extremely lovable, interesting, and above all ''adult'' cast of characters. I haven't even played Innocent Sin but I'd probably love it all the more if I had.

Just, you know, that gameplay is ''really really'' bad.

I'm probably in the minority when I say that I actually like and prefer the PSP remake of P1s music over the original

Still haven't started EP cause I'm still waiting for that fan translation of the PSP remake. Might just bite the bullet soon and play the PS1 version

The crazy random encounter rate and constant battles made me quit both games. It's a shame since Persona 2 is actually quite interesting. But playing it was like a chore. Batles every two steps...

I thought 1 was so terrible that I came close to never trying out another Persona. It took years of praise for 4 to get me to try it last year.

I haven't played the first, but the combat in 2 is sooo fuuuckin sloooooow. Add to that that the encounter rate is turned up to 11. You take like two steps and get jumped.
Other than that it was a pretty good game, I liked the story. I only played Innocent Sin though, Eternal Punishment doesn't seem to be available on Vita.

They're both on the Vita. Ones a Ps1 classic and the others a PSP title.

I didn't like EP much too the first time I played it too, mostly because Maya was lame as you said, and I thought the cast wasn't as well developed as IS/character interactions were lacking.
Tatsuzou Sudou and the NWO
were also super lame.
I was also pissed off that IS kids were basically reduced to secondary characters, I really love the IS crew.

I'm always surprised when I see it people ranking it over IS.

I did start to appreciate it on further replay, when I stopped expecting Innocent Sin.2. I really like the cast now. The villains outside of the returning IS ones were still lame tho'.

I tried to like Persona 2 on PSP, but I just couldn't stand the battle system or the dungeons. It was just way too slow for it's own good, even playing it on an emulator later on with frameskip wasn't fun. I really did enjoy the characters and story, but I couldn't bring myself to actually play the game.

I've tried Persona 2 for the first time two years ago on PS3, story and characters really got me hooked but I just couldn't carry on with the gameplay system, dungeons felt like a dragging chore and bosses were freakin' hard, never finished it.

Aside from that, not a Persona game but I finished SMT Nocturne with no problems during the same year.

It would be remiss of me not to mention the incredible manga adaptation of Persona 1. Legit great stuff there and it's well worth a read for anyone who doesn't want to slog through the terrible gameplay.

The manga adaptation is stellar

Really makes me wish there was a game that incorporated all of that stuff because it's so damn good

Same with me. I played Persona 2:IS through and hated it.

Months later I played Nocturne and found it offered some of the best 70 hours I put into a jRPG.

P2 hasn't aged very well in terms of game structure, IMO. But there are some inventive and cool systems, the rumors structure was really cool.

The best way to play p2 is probably the ps1 original with the translation patch, if that is still floating around. In addition to cosmetic changes (for the worse), the PSP version allegedly has its difficulty nerfed.

I might be the only person who likes the battle system in P2 after reading this thread? Tarot cards require some grinding, but it's not too bad - especially if you forge contracts. I also didn't think battles took too long.

By the way, fans of P2, P5 is probably the closest the series has been to 2 since its release. Look forward to it.
