I don't know anything about popes, but I'm watching the hysteria on CNN and this is really fascinating. These crowds are MASSIVE. And apparently, the Pope doesn't come to the U.S. too often.

But one thing I found hilarious was the security staff bringing babies to the Pope for him to bless/kiss during the motorcade run. Let the mom handle the baby, not some random guy xD

Fake edit: and just as I post this, Pope Francis lets a kid come up to the motorcade

Pope is visiting different cities here in America or just DC?
Philly, NYC, and DC. Philly should be the only one left.

I'm not sure what to say to respond to the OP, yes there are a lot of Catholics or people who just think it's interesting to see a major religious figure. No, prior popes haven't traveled much due to health reasons. Younger ones naturally travel more.

Benedict travelled A. Lot. And that's not even mentioning John Paul II's insane schedule. He only slowed down a little towards the end. But this is the current Pope's first visit to the States and it's getting a lot more attention than I would have guessed.

I hope he remembers to clap after his meals.

Popes prior to Paul VI just didn't leave Italy for a couple of centuries, and with travel before that being much slower it wasn't common either. Paul VI, John Paul II and Benedict XVI all visited the United States. Francis is at 16 countries, Paul VI visited 20 countries, Benedict XVI did 25 countries, and John Paul II did 129 countries, often visiting countries no Pope ever saw. This included the period after the attack.

Im gonna say large quantity of hispanic population is catholic so that makes for a huge % of these crowds.

I wonder if Americans (non hispanc) dont like that the pope has speeches in spanish. Like with the huge anti-brown sentiments that a lot of Americans (conservative/religious) have, wonder if they feel like that is shitty this dude isnt speaking 'merican' all the time.

CNN is seriously overdoing it with the pope coverage. Its like no other news even exists.

CNN or most of the big "news" stations in the US hardly qualify as news stations tbh. It's pretty clear that their only real priority is getting as many viewers as possible

Best time to sneak into the Vatican
This is how National Treasure 3 starts.

Pope visits the US, Nic Cage breaks into the Vatican.

Still better than seeing that little baby from England plastered all over my TV because he happened to come from the nut sack of royalty.

Both get equally dumb coverage but it's CNN. Also, i don't hate the baby or have any ill will towards the baby i just find it ridiculous we (the US media) spend days round the clock covering it.

To be fair Congress was the same way. Apparently we have no other problems in this country that need solving if they can sit around all day and listen to him spout nonsense about Martin Luther King(a man who his church didnt support during the civil rights movement).

A massive waste of time, and even more reason not to pay attention to the media.

a lot more was discussed than just MLK in that speech to Congress.

Global warming, health and wellbeing, discrimination, poverty...

edit: ..social-political unity, labor rights..

They would already be biased against the Pope since most of the conservatives are Protestant.

As a Catholic whose faith has waned over the past 15 or so years, I find this pope to be way more in line with the preachings of the church and favors the less fortunate. He's really great.

Yeah, but didn't plenty of Catholic priests partake in the Civil Rights movement?

I left my visit to NYC the day the Pope was there (last Thursday). My hotel was the last building on 51st before the sidewalk was blocked off to 5th Ave where St. Patrick's Cathedral is.

Homeland security, TSA, cops...everywhere. And people were already lining up around that area at 1pm to see him.

All I could think of was "I better be able to get my luggage out of this damn hotel". Had to go in a big circle to get back to my hotel the night before because they were fencing in everything.

I caught the pope in London a few years back. He put on a hell of a show. I got injured in the mosh put...should've known better.

That's actually a really poignant onservationn for a number of reasons, most of all because immigration was such a huge theme of his speeches while he was here, particularly at Congress. The Church has a staunch Amnesty stance, I think the Pope's visit is going to be very disruptive as far as the immigration debate here. But also Americans have a hostile history towards Catholics in general. The Basilica here in Philadelphia has its windows way up high, because Catholic churches at the time we're being vandalized regularly. As far as Catholics specifically, we're actually a very cosmopolitan bunch and it'd be strange if anyone had a problem with him not speaking English. For example, the readings at tonight's mass were split equally in English, Spanish, and Vietnamese.

I went to the festival last night and mass today, it was pretty special.

Was going to 34th to eat with some friends on Friday, which happened to be the exact moment the pope was driving through that area. We ended up taking 5 minutes to come out one side of the subway station just to walk down the block back into the same station, shit was too crowded. I almost went deaf from the amount of cheers when he drove by.
