to most of the posters here, when the needle is not on your skin you wont feel the pain, and that's why most of you think is a joke, its not a joke, op is right to confront him like that, its disrespectful and immature. I support ur action op, that's how a man should act when ppl disrespect you like that.

No, a man would say something as soon as he heard it (this doesn't necessarily mean challenging a fight either), not sit there seething until you gather the nerve.

Dude. we were in the middle of the conference, in front of everybody in the company, and some tree planting instructors.

Why was there a run of people not understanding the OP? You must be either simple in the mind or English is your third language...

Also, Docpan was awesome. He is missed.

He said what he said in during the conference. I dont think you read the part in parenthesis.

Because what the OP typed was unclear.

I work in a game studio (QA, been here for a month)...

Props to you for sticking up for yourself, though it might lead to future problems since you're still new to the company.

slight OT:

Just imagine a smiling Filipino fellow.

I don't know why, but this made me chuckle.

OP, are you by any chance working in a studio around Ortigas/Makati area?

There's only a few gaming studios here that I know of that has a QA department. I know this is may be a bit of a stretch but your co-worker reminds me of someone I know.

If you want to talk more about it, drop me a PM.

Oh btw, this seems a bit fucked up and may be totally unrelated but I StreetPassed someone about a week ago with a "Momotaros" 3DS ID and I could have sworn I read "NeoGAF.com" as the SP greeting. It would be creepy awesome if that was the OP.

Amazing that he's getting shit for this. If some random nobhead threatened physical violence against me, I'd be embarrassed for myself if I didn't have a word with him about it.

I understand you don't want to look like a wet blanket, OP, but if you intend to start a confrontation I hope you have another job potentially lined up. Today's argument can be next week's pink slip depending on how things escalate from there.

Office drama is like global thermonuclear war, the only winning move is not to play. I'd rather be an embarrased wimp with a job than the world's toughest tough guy on the unemployment line.

Hydrogen Bluebird said:
Dude, I'd take being unemployed over this disrespecting shit.

You have a serious problem. Risking your job over so minor and insignificant a slight is insane behavior.

Are you by any chance really young? I could see this from an 18 year old agro teen, maybe.

Just be the bigger man, don't let this get to you. EVERY place has someone that thinks they're better than anyone else.

You've got far more important things to worry about later in life. This is not one of them.

No, you need to establish yourself as someone who won't get shit on. What a bunch of pussies here in this thread.

You're venting about something that happened at a video game company you work at? What are the odds that these dudes have GAF accounts, or at least browse it? Could get kind of awesome here.

I work in a game studio (QA, been here for a month) and we were in a conference room (everyone, close to 50 people) having an orientation for an upcoming company tree-planting event. I don't know everyone yet and while I was standing around in the back, two people (one was a programmer I worked with, the other dude I didn't know) were laughing about a co-worker (who I didn't know) but I assumed I've worked with in the past since this programmer I knew said something like "we better be careful or he might snitch us out since he knows him/her" and then this dude I didn't know says something like "I don't care, I'll beat him up"

Now, who the fuck was that guy to say something like that right? That really pissed me off. This dude I didn't know is still in the conference right now but I'm planning on confronting him when the conference is over.

Fuck this shit.

people like you make the world less fun. get over yourself

alternatively, you missed an opportunity to get in on the joke (yes, he was joking, don't even have to be there to know that) and make some friends.

Can't wait: "I was confronted at work today."

Wait, were you still at work when you posted? Shouldn't you be working?

He said it right in front of you during the conference? This is known as good natured ball breaking among normal males. You are a psychopath.

It appears he said it thinking it was between him and that other co-worker. That makes the guy a douchebag and the OP a hero for calling him out on it.

You fluffed it. As soon as they guy said "I'll beat him up", you should have whipped around and said "Excuse me?" with one of those faces that says "I'd rather not batter you, so choose your next words very wisely". He'd have said he was joking whether he was or not.

I'd probably let it lie now that the moment has passed.

If this is true, fine, but I didn't see a post that indicated it was the case

it's still a joke...people don't just randomly talk about kicking the shit out of random people they don't know at work. sheesh

I'm with the OP. It's disrespectful since they have never met or spoken to one another. It's completely different if you have an established relationship. Saying he doesn't care and he'll beat up the OP is a stupid thing to say.

This guy isn't a comedian so he doesn't get comedic license to say "it was a joke."

Disrespectful. Bah. That's a code word for "I feel agro".

OP has rage issues and should seek help, before he ends up careening through life angry all the time at what are literally inconsequential mutterings.

Look up Modern Stoicism, it may help. For real. You shouldn't be this angry.

but this is how guys almost universally joke with each other

just like you don't need comedic license to make a fart joke, although with some of the tones in this thread, a fart joke might be a little too heavy for some

So you listen in on a private conversation and get super offended when the guys joke amongst themselves? You sound like a real joy to be around.

They were in a conference room together...how is that private?

CrankyJay said:
Sometimes jokes are offensive?
I don't see how what happened to the OP could be thought of as that offensive. I'm an emotional dude but in a situation like that, I probably would have forgotten it happened awhile later.

Then again I probably would have joked with that guy...

OP reminds me of that guy who made threads about beating people up and raging over insignificant things. He made a topic saying a friend of his disrespected him while they were near a car or something and he beat him to a 'bloody pulp' and hit him with the car door or something. I can't remember all the details I wish I could remember the posters name it was so funny.

edit - Found it, guy is docpan, it seems the car door thing never happened haha my imagination running wild

The guy he confronted came up to the OP later and apologized...so he must have known he did something wrong. Why would you apologize for something you weren't guilty about?

because you don't want to trigger other people's insanity

Then why make a dumb joke that can be possibly misconstrued and trigger other people's insanity. Stop arguing. You defending a guy making a joke about beating up a person he doesn't know is part of what's wrong with society. Don't you have some rioting to do in Vancouver? =)

Just to clear things up, he was clearly taking about me when he said "I'll beat him up". Thing is, we didn't even know each other. We haven't even talked. So it comes across as offensive when he said that.

Thanks to the people who agreed w/ how I handled this (establishing that I am not to get shit on, self-respect, etc)

To the others that disagree or think that I should have done something else, well, we all have our differences.

He was probably being a nice guy. Maybe he wanted a joking response from the OP and saw that the OP wasn't feeling the situation.

Then surely that's how he explained it to the OP? Right?

Is this what happened OP?

I mean, think of it this way: Would someone really be as stupid as to jeopardize his job and make such a serious threat?

It's obvious that he was joking. Some people may see it as a joke in bad tastes, but in my opinion it's nothing to worry about.

No, it isn't. The OP had never interacted with the guy that said he'd 'beat him up'. To me, that's the big difference between this & friendly banter with mates.

If I sit in a pub and mumble about 'beating that guy up' to my friend (about a stranger in the bar), I'd expect 'that guy' to shoot me a look and, probably, a right hook too. It's threatening language from a stranger, it doesn't come off as banter.

Probably, but when your job is on the line and you have family to feed at home, I'm sure you'll do what's necessary to put food on the table. My ego got the better of me when I was younger, but I was able to repair burned bridges and made a better life for myself.

I know what my limits are, and most people who act like this are drama queens. Work life does not equate to real life.
