So today I modded my 360 and DS3 controllers...

Gen X

Trust no one. Eat steaks.
....and what a nightmare the PS3 one was. I wouldn't be exaggerating if I said that it took me a couple of hours to put the PS3 one back together. The 360 one was fine, 10 mins tops to take it apart and put it back together in perfect working condition, but the PS3 one, man, I've probably lost a few years off my life due to stress.

Basically I had a spare Xbox Duke controller that has been sitting around gathering dust since 2005. Decided I would have a bit of a tinker on my own. I put the Duke sticks into the 360 pad with instant success, then I thought 'What if I put the 360 ones in the PS3 pad?'. Well let me break it down.

I got the pad apart with ease. I remembered that I had to take it apart on the day I bought the console new due to a constant sticky button (some sort of gum inside the square button) and that was tricky to put back together. This time though, if it could go wrong, it went wrong. I had a lot of difficulty getting those shoulder buttons and triggers back together. They would keep slipping out, then one trigger wouldn't spring back and then when it was all together one of the analogue sticks would get stuck in the up position. I took it all apart again and got a razor blade to shave off about half a mm or so off the actual stick that inserts into the analogue add ons. That worked fine, but then the triggers. Noticed one of the springs has a tiny bit broken off the end. I don't know when this happened but it still works, just feels a little lighter than the other one, so I moved this to the right side. Now I have a light accelerator and a heavy brake just like real life hahahaha.

tl:dr, I will think long and hard about ever doing this again on the PS3 Dual Shock but I am very happy with the final result. Just tried Killzone 2 with the new mod and instantly I notice a massive improvement. Am yet to try the 360 with any games, but doesn't matter, I have a few 360 pads laying around.

IMO Duke sticks feel too big and stiff on the 360 controller. I like to use the S sticks in my 360 controller.

I never had any S Controller as I didn't like the placement of the black and white buttons, but the actual movement of the Duke sticks in the 360 feels the same as before, just the shape is a little different.

I also noticed when assembling the Duke and 360 that the hole that both analogue sticks pokes through is around 1.5mm larger in diameter on the Duke so it has a larger range of movement. I wonder if modding the 360 one ever so slightly would make a difference to turning speed or not. I tested both without the covers on and on both controllers with both 360 and Duke sticks you get the same range of movement, but with the covers on the 360 moves almost a mm less in either direction.

take the sticker off of your Xbox controller.

Oh god I hate people that leave that sticker on their controller. If they let it anywhere near me I'll peel it off myself.

That said I want the OP's PS3 controller, especially if it has that popular trigger mod.

Honestly, I didn't even notice it and I bought the Halo Reach console on launch back in Sept 10. :lol

You mean these?

=D

remove that sticker. and the people who leave the stickers on their tv's and the non windows/intel ones on their laptops... my hatred is boundless

I do like the look of that modded PS3 controller. Got an old 360 pad that never gets used anyway. Hmm.

I definitely wouldn't have even considered it if I only had the grey sticks from a white controller though.

PS: Sticker is removed now cos it annoys me now I knew it was there. It never stuck out like it does on the white controllers.

Nice mod, I really like the look of the xb sticks on the ds3.

This reminds me, has anyone put their Gamecube analogs on the Nunchuck? I've seen one guy do it and it looked great. I want to but I haven't gotten around to getting one of those weird screwdrivers.

im slowly taking them off one by one, hopefully he doesn't notice. in three months, his third sticker is going straight to hell.

I don't know why but this made me laugh quite a bit. I agree though, I can't stand when people leave them on.

One of my friends had the clear plastic sticker that came on his 50 inch TV on there for months and months so "it wouldn't get scratched"... It was peeling off and all dirty around the edges but he wouldn't take it off. Bluh.

Opening up the PS3 controllers and putting them back together is a royal pain.
I voied never to mess with that shit again, it pissed me off so much.

I think so!

Is installing those really as easy as people make it out to be?

Yeah, they're just clip ons. Takes a little bit of force to clip them but they work fine and they pop off easy with a flathead screwdriver if need be.

man if I wasn't a junior I'd start a thread in the OT about all the stickers that come on various tech and what we do with them.

then, I'll proceed to round out my ignore list with all the offenders

Why downgrade the DS3 like that? Or is it just the physical sticks and the mechanic inside is still the same. I'm asking because 360 sticks alway started shifting on me in less than a year. The sticks on my 4 year old DS3 feel like day one.

Just the physical sticks. Honestly, the difference is night and day and I don't understand how. It feels like there is that little dead zone now that you get on the 360, it's definitely not as sensitive as the factory DS3 which for me is a massive plus. Makes for subtle aiming in shooters now feel like bliss. I've just spent almost 2hrs on Killzone 2 (have never finished it) and my aiming feels so much more precise that it has become enjoyable to play. I'll have to try a couple of other shooters after this.

Downgrade? I think its more of an upgrade even though it will always be a shitty controller until they change the position of the sticks and put in a proper d-pad.

We're probably stuck with the segmented d-pad design forever since they can't copy other styles. Although the Dreamcast d-pad was pretty similar to Nintendo's.

Looks like what I did with my Gamecube controller, using a couple of sticks from two Wii Nunchuks:

sogoooood

I wonder if GameCube sticks would fit. I have 2 extra pads lying around...

Nope. Nintendo sticks have different fittings. You could try filing them down, and using some glue, but you can't just swap them over like you can with other Nintendo controllers.

I love what you've done with the c-stick, but if it was me I'd leave the main analogue stick alone. I LOVE the gamecube's circular multi-grip analogue stick. In fact, I'd like to see if anyone's put a gc stick onto a Wii nunchuck.

Hmm i have a broken 360 controller..how hard is it to open and replace the ds3 sticks?

Quite easy..... to open it. You will need to trim a tiny bit off the analogue stem on the actual mechanical bit but this is quite easy with a razor blade (and by a tiny bit, I mean a slither but atleast you can test this by putting the casing back together and testing the sticks before inserting the screws) Reason being that otherwise the sticks sit a tiny bit higher than the DS3 ones so they will rub under the top casing. This is due to longer sticks and longer inside hole within the DS3 stick. (Even when putting DS3 sticks in a 360 you need to pack inside the stick or it sits too low and rubs on the mechanical bit of the analogue). Once done though they work like a dream.

Biggest issue is assembling the controller. It's bloody fidgety and you will need a lot of patience. I had to take a time out at one point as I started cursing and getting all hot under the collar. =D

You can, but the Wii sticks are taller, so the GC stick doesn't stick up as much.

I modded all of my Wavebirds to swap the C-Stick out with the normal analog stick, made the controllers much better.

Please stop using these.

You will lose in most racing games online/on hardest difficulty because you can't get full acceleration anymore because you are not able to pull the trigger down the full way.

That's absolute rubbish. Mine travel the same distance and I can physically see because the clip on trigger does not touch the casing in any way.

Sounds like a lot of work for some real ugly analogue sticks, lol.
I just picked up some rubber nubs to stick on the end, lol.

The Vita has a new D-Pad look that's closer and joined up rather than the separated look of the DS, and it's pretty nice too, clicks in all 8 directions and feels really nice to use generally, I've heard it's pretty awesome for fighting games considering its smaller size in general, but don't quote me on that, lol.

One thing I've done all of my Xbox controllers is to sandpaper down the edges around the sticks.

Assures me they never slow-turn on my ass.

What edges do you mean?

Also really bothers me in TV shows and Movies that they ALWAYS leave the sticker on the 360 controller. I know its a small detail but it drives me crazy.

Same way they used to cut the wires off of N63 controller in movies and TV as well.

Its all in the details!!!

The round plastic around the sticks.

If the sticks aren't calibrated right, they won't reach 100% when you push them to the edges. By making the space around the sticks larger that doesn't happen.

The only reason I can think of with them not calibrating right would be if they were pushed off to the side when turned on, otherwise, centre will be 0%.

Yea I remember having a bitch of a time when I took mine apart to fix one of the triggers. The way the triggers fit through the bottom shell and how the shells match is kind of a pain :(

The DS3 has to be the most frustrating controller to put back together. It was the damn shoulder buttons that cause the most problem due to an extra separate piece between each set on either side, if I recall correctly. Nightmare.

I've taken apart most of the controllers I own at one point or another, sometimes just to see how they are made. Only one I've really switched parts out on was actually just last night. Replaced the analog on my N64 controller with a slightly different type that looks similar to a Gamecube one. Super easy to do. Feels a bit different (have to learn to aim again in games that use it such a way) but I think it'll last a lot longer.

Really try it. There's an indie game called Controller Doctor that I use to check.

My oldest controller is about 92% on the left stick when I push it forward.

It's always just a matter of having to push extra hard to reach that 100%.
