So we got really crappy service and left NO tip

I find it so unclassy, almost obscene, when you go the a restaurant in the US and the waiter/waitress at the end just tells you how much to tip him. Happened to me several times when on vacation with my family and friends.

Last time was in Chicago. We were in a steakhouse and the guy just basically added 20% of the bill to himself without even asking us. Bloody hell man. The service was good but it made us feel uncomfortable. It almost ruined our dining experience.

Everyone knows that when you're in the US you have to tip. Even tourists. No need to put a knife to our throats.

It's a group of peole that modern society hasn't deemed discriminating against unpoliticaly correct.

You should try it. It's really fun.

Being fat is an inherently bad thing though. I'm not saying it's right to make fun of them, but it's not the same as making fun of people because of their race or sexual orientation.

I remember eating at a pizza hut once... We sat ouraelves, filled up our own drinks with plastic cups the waitress brought, gave her our order and took our ticket to the register when we were done.
I honestly don't recall getting or expecting any "real" service.
But a automatic gratuity is always expected with large parties -- 8 or more.

I can kinda get onboard with not tipping the terrible waitress but the fat comment is really dickish, OP. And it's also really telling how you're ignoring everyone calling you out on it.

you actually don't. federal law mandates they will be making at least minimum wage (which though admittedly is peanuts) and more than that if tips + bare minimum are higher. if you have an automatic tip added to your bill and it wasn't explained in detail before you ordered anything, you can absolutely refuse to tip what's listed (and tip a little less but something at least unless it was atrocious service)

I have never in my life had this happen, and I've lived or visited all over the US.

I like you.

If the service is good or average, what % do you tip?

12-15% is the accepted standard, I believe. I always tip, but I've never had service so shitty that I didn't tip.

Isn't it also a dollar per drink at a bar, and I think a $5 for a barber?

Now I'm just trying to think of businesses where you'd tip

Same. The fuck?

Not sure where you've been eating, but I've never had a waiter or waitress tell me or even hint at what they wanted me to tip them, and if they did that would be highly unprofessional. Some restaurants do add a set gratuity for large parties, but I've never heard of a server just doing it himself and I'm pretty sure that would be illegal. Were you in a large party?

I always thought Pizza Hut was something you ate alone to hide your shame, not somewhere you take a large group of people for a Saturday night unless you are on a little league team.

I've been to a few pizza huts in foreign countries that are a closer to something like TGI Fridays here in the states. Not exactly fine dining but you'll still get a waiter.

This thread reminded me that yes, most Pizza Huts have a dining area and sit down service. I guess I always forget this because Dominoes and Papa Johns are takeout/delivery only. I need to go back to the Hut sometime for a sitdown dinner

we were a bunch of people in our mid 20s, we're either going to go to a bar/grill or get some pizza.

not some fancy zagat survey'd place that has a maitre'd lol.

- since we were a big table she added on the tip herself, and I crossed it out and left a 0. again she didn't come to pick up the bill so I took it to the register, she's cashing me out and looks at me and goes "why are you changing the tip?"

cliffnotes: i got shitty service and left NO tip on a fat bitchy waitress and I feel good about it..

Most restaurants in US have posting on menu or entrance that states X amount of gratuity added to tables of 8 or 10 more. If it is not posted, then yes they should not do that. If it is posted and you had bad service, you can usually object and the manager will agree if it is any decent establishment.

What does weight have anything to do with the situation.

I've worked in restaurants through high school/college and i've never had the manager enforce a tip. you seriously can't. even if its on the receipt its there as a formality

I have been to many many restaurants that state there is gratuity. Pizza Hut has one that is 15% for 8 or more people or close to that.

Is there anything worse than bad service in a restaurant?

I was in a place a few weeks back kind of in a rush, went in and thankfully it had maybe 5 people in total so we stayed. It took at least 5 minutes for the waiter to grab us from the door and sit us down, another 5 to take our drink order and another 10 to bring them. Like.. seriously? Was he playing a game of Hearthstone in the back?

I almost went up to order the food it took that long, in the mean time a couple practically broke their way out of the fire exit because they were sick of waiting for something. When our food eventually came they offered us the exited couples garlic bread lol.

All in all it took over an hour for a quick meal in a near empty place when we were in a rush. The food was good though so I couldn't hate them completely. They sure as hell weren't getting a tip though :L

The "fat" insult wasn't cool OP, everything else you did good, bad service should never be rewarded...Like some already had said: the reason she didn't give the fuck about doing her job was she thought you guys would buckle and pay that "mandatory" tip.

I'm proud of you for stepping up and telling the manager you are not paying that bullshit, "mandatory" or otherwise.

Not so proud of the "fat bitch" ... try to be bit more credible and level headed next time eh mate?

I think "fat acceptance" is fucking pathetic, but that doesn't mean you should be insulting somebody because of their weight.

Many here are having an internal struggle.

They want this to be a fun thread backfire, but at the same time its a tipping thread.

What happened with you girlfriend? Did you leave her for someone who has more potential in her later years?

huh.

Was this like, a party after a little league game or something?

Did someone you know turn 13?

You're setting a pretty bad example to the kids you're coaching, man.

There is a wide range of places to eat that exist somewhere between pizza hut and an ultra fancy establishment.

-server told us "move out of my way" while we were waiting to be sat. Granted she didn't know that she would be serving us yet, but srsly wtf.

- doesn't give us menus once we sit down, then blames her manager.

-the tables were fucking sticky, they obviously weren't properly wiped down after the last people.

- never gives us our check, i had to leave the table and go to where all waitresses were hanging, and she was fucking eating! in front of the restaurant.

- since we were a big table she added on the tip herself, and I crossed it out and left a 0. again she didn't come to pick up the bill so I took it to the register, she's cashing me out and looks at me and goes "why are you changing the tip?"

-instead of even arguing with her, i ask for the manager, i tell him whats going on. He LIES to me and says the gratuity is mandatory and every restaurant does that. I tell him that I've worked in restaurants myself and tipping is NEVER compulsory, ESPECIALLY if the service is below par.

-he says "this is the first time he's ever heard this" knowing I called his bluff and he's just trying to save some face. and then lets me go.

I believing in tipping well, I really do, but honestly in cases like this she deserved nothing. It was a slow night as well so she really had no excuses.

I was with you until this part and then I realized that you're Zoggy.

2 families of 4 usually. I don't know if it's considered a large party.

Again, we always tip because we know that workers make peanuts in hourly wages and working as a waiter is a tough job. Plus the service is usually really good in the US. I have to hand it to them, they know how to make you enjoy your dinner. But many times, too many times, it's ruined at the end when the server presses your hand and make you tip him what he wants. Maybe they target tourists or they think that people from certain countries are cheap and bad tippers (I know I've heard that a lot). so they make sure you're going to tip them

Last time was at Morton's in Chicago. Just 6 of us. We had a late meal, just a steak and wine. No entry, no desert. And the dude said something in the lines of " I suggest a 20% tip " or something like that. He had already put it on the bill. Come on man ... And we stayed there for less than an hour ... Eh.

I only tip if I feel that the server deserves it(which is common offcourse). I was at a restaurant recently, and the server kept on coming back to us and asking us if we're finished. It was fucking offensive. I felt like she was basically telling us to leave. I left her nothing, and I looked her in the eye.
