So were the gamecube 3D pokemon games that bad?

Talking about Pokemon Colosseum and Gales of Darkness. I guess they were the first time they tried to give pokemon a more serious plot and failed, hence why no one remembers or wants to remember they existed?

I think those are two of the best spin-offs the series has ever had. I wish they would give it a shot again.
 
No, their good, they are just missing the thing that makes Pokemon what it is. No wild Pokemon to discover, no trading in the typical sense, and a plethora of what makes a main line Pokemon game great.
 
I had fun with them. It was cool to have a fully 3D single player adventure at that time.
 
They're a lot of fun actually. Colosseum is a little rough but XD refined the formula a bit and was really enjoyable. They hinted at a 3rd game at the end of XD but I think the series is done.
 
They're fine for what they are, but they're half steps that are overlong, boring, and nonsensical. I'd much rather see an actual full fledged Pokemon RPG, no "Snatching" or "Shadow Pokemon"
 
Pokemon Channel was the best Gamecube Pokemon game. It is most deserving of the underrated Pokemon spin-off game title.

But those two are pretty good. I still have painful memories of losing the 94/100 battle in the Colosseum's battle mode. Can't even imagine how many hours of gameplay it took for me to get there and then lose.
 
I played them again recently (along with Pokémon Rumble on the Wii), and I'd say they're nothing special. Unless you're a die-hard fan that must play everything related to the brand, there are much better games you should devote your time to.
 
Man I feel like Gale of Darkness came out just a little while after the XD emoticon was invented. I remember so many gamefaqs joke about "I just got 'Pokemon XD' XD"
 
They were fun games.

The most barebones version of a stadium game they ever made. Basically was pointless if you didn't own a Gen 4 version of Pokemon too.

No mini games. It was good for grinding TMs though at the time, about it.
 
Had Colosseum. Game felt pretty boring. The idea of a big budget console Pokémon game that broke all the rules of what a Pokémon game is seemed like a good idea at the time, but was executed poorly.
 
Colosseum was good, but XD really refined the first game's foundations and turned it into a great game. It's not a mainline Pokemon game, so I was fine with the snatching mechanic. Plus they were the only way to get a bunch of Pokemon in gen 3.

It's a shame that we got Battle Revolution instead of a third entry, that game was trash compared to C/XD (and Stadium 1 and 2).
 
Colosseum is one of my favourite games of all time and has one of the best soundtracks and atmospheres I've enjoyed in a JRPG. Seriously.

XD is more of the same in a less charming way, but still solid.
 
They had potential, certainly. A bit too rough around the edges to be great. XD is still enjoyable today, though.
 
I really loved these games when they came out. Not sure how well they aged, but they were a lot of fun.

I have been hoping for another Collosseum-like entry for a while. Don't necessarily need it to rehash the Shadow Pokemon/Snatching mechanic (though it was cool for what it was), but I would much appreciate a deviation from the 8 gyms storyline. I'm aware Sun/Moon seem to be deviating from that some, but having 4 trials or whatever is hardly that much more creative.
 
My biggest issue I had with it from memory was that battles were really slow. And even at the time the character models weren't amazing.

That said, I did like Wes as a main protagnist, and the music and the setting seemingly being more 'edgy'.
 
They're ok, not really worth playing now imo.

I hated how they reused N64 models for the Kanto and Johto Pokemon.

Also the battles are slow as hell in the story due to every fight being a double battle and the animations taking forever.

Orre was a pretty cool setting though.
 
Honestly I thought some of the shadow pokemon should have been earlier in XD like
butterfree and raticate should have been in the early 20s instead of 30s
but I did like the selection you can train for example my XD team was
Jolteon
Flygon
Aggron
Ursauring
Breloom
Walrein
 
Colloseum had great atmosphere, the underground was actually a pretty neat location. Due to all battles being double battles, and the slow animations, game was very slow paced. It had some neat ideas, but gameplaywise I didn't feel most of them were executed very well, but I still love the game, the soundtrack and atmosphere was really cool, despite the poor character models.

Also they introduced Miror B, the BESTEST.
 
Who says they are bad? I believe they were both great and we should get another spinoff in a similar tone.Also, they felt harder than the mainline games which is another plus.
 
I like the GameCube spinoffs more than any of the main handheld games. The music, the attack animations, the setting. As well, they seemed more challenging compared to any of the handheld games I played.
 
I liked them alot and I been wishing for a new console Pokémon game just like them but now with the NX we will finally be there since I was forced to wait for the portable series to catch up to the Console versions in terms of graphics.

I mean sure the battles would take longer than usual at the time because of all the animations that played out but no worries on that front since the portable series battle speed/time has also slowed down more and more for the same reasons ever since Diamond/Pearl.
 
I always viewed them as more traditional RPGs, where you don't get to choose who you get in your party and have to use what is given to you. I thought they were really fun for being different than the regular formula at the time.
 
What? Bad? They were amazing!

The only people who didn't like it were those who were expecting the console games to be carbon copies of the handheld ones.

Wait... There won't be 8 gyms in S/M? Oh...
 
They're not bad, but they're pretty much designed to make you have less fun with them than you would with the mainline games.

I had my fun with them, the music was interesting and having a different story structure for once was nice, but the restricted pool of pokemon you can get can be awful depending on your tastes and the method to convert them to regular pokemon is AWFUL. Especially in the first game.
