So what are your top 5 favorite Star Wars games?

there are too many to choose from, but I think KOTOR, jedi knight and rogue leader were the ones that excited me the most when they were released

1. X-Wing Alliance
2. Jedi Outcast
3. Jedi Academy
4. Jedi Knight
5. Rebellion/Supremacy

Honourable mentions -

1. X-Wing Vs. TIE Fighter
2. Republic Commando
3. KOTOR/II
4. Episode One Racer

Dishonourable mention -

Battlefront/II - I grew up during the golden age of LucasArts, where almost every release was an instant classic. We got several X-Wing games, which completed with Alliance, giving us the perfect flight game. We got the Dark Forces/Jedi Knight series, which gave us first and third person combat, and allowed us to properly use the lightsaber. Like many, my friends and I dreamed of the day a game would come along that would combine those two elements together, and Battlefield (and it's sequel) seemed to be it.

But, no. In trying to combine everything, and please everyone, it became a jack of all trades and a master of none. It made more sense to develop for consoles first, but for us coming from a pc background, it was a very console type of game in it's control and motion, with no depth to it whatsoever, and it suffered on pc as a result. You could fight in first-person, where it took several hits to kill an enemy with the basic weapon, but there was little real depth to the combat. You could spawn in a hangar and run to the ship of your choice (nice addition!), but you're stuck in this pseudo-3D world where the Y axis is extremely limited, and ship movement in general felt very constrained to the X axis as a result. Again, there was little real depth to the flight segment.

Battlefront II improved things a bit, with better maps and vehicles, but it's console origins betrayed it, and it is, like it's predecessor, trying to do too much and achieving little. You could play as a Jedi or Sith but with ridiculously limited powers and lightsaber battles proving to be little more than "wave your glowing stick at the other guy by pressing the mouse button until one of you dies". Can the games really be blamed for all this? No, most of our disappointment comes from prior expectations.

For example, if I'm flying a ship in X-Wing Alliance, I have a mission to destroy a cargo ship or something, and it has fighters attacking me in defense, trying to stop me. As they fire, my shields take a battering, and I have to balance my need to keep them up versus the power my weapons need in order to fire. I could set most power to engines and fly ahead of my enemies, then set all shields to rear as they catch up to me, firing all the while, and give my weapons all available power, firing at the cargo vessel. Was there anything remotely like this kind of tactical depth available in Battlefront? Like fun there was.

Similarly, in Jedi Knight/Outcast/Academy, the lightsaber battles are based on a deep combat system, where strategy comes in to play in how you wield your blade, when to use your energy in the Force to push an enemy, or defend yourself from Lightning. Do I press the attack, selecting the third style for heavy blows, hoping to overpower my enemy, or do I switch to the first style and be defensive, parrying quickly and jabbing in and out to get a cut here and there? Should I be acrobatic, or stay grounded to avoid being Pushed mid-air off a platform? Where will I spend my Force points? Into speed, into healing, etc.? Was there anything remotely like this range of options in Battlefront? Like f- well, you get the idea.

The Battlefront games are kind of a light fun, combining the two great series of LucasArts games that came before them, and I understand why people like them. But seeing people list them in their top five just reminds me of why I can't stand them, every time I see or play the game I remember those amazing games that came before it that offered so much more. Ahem... I'll shut up now.

1. KOTOR 2 - Began the long line of semi-flawed Obsidian masterpieces.

2. X-Wing Alliance - Huge game, some awesome space battles. Family missions suck, though.

3. KOTOR - The "twist" remains supremely overrated (who didn't see that shit coming from miles away), but an amazing game regardless.

4. Rogue Squadron - a casual, but fun star fighter game.

5. Jedi Outcast - despite the slow start, a fun adventure game from Raven.

To be honest I haven't played much in the series. That said:

1) KOTOR
2) Shadows of the Empire
3) Rogue Squadron 2: Rogue Leader
4) Dark Forces

I'm still doing a playthrough of Jedi Knight.

Mine are all console games.

KotOR
Rogue Squadron 2
Rogue Squadron
KotOR 2
Republic Commando

Shadows of the Empire is also a favorite of mine, but not because it's any good - because it was one of the only games on the early N64, it was one of the reasons I became interested in Star Wars in the first place.

It has it's problems but don't sell it short. The first level of Shadows of the Empire is the greatest part of any game of all time, and was worth the price of an N64 alone (Mario 64 was just a bonus).

I've just come to the realization that I've yet to play any Star Wars games on a serious level (I dabble with TIE Fighter and Podracer as a kid). I think at this point, I'd be looking for a solid lightsaber focused character action game.

1. Tie Fighter ; My favorite game of all time
2. X-Wing ; Not quite as good as Tie Fighter, but still amazing
3. X- Wing Alliance ; See a pattern yet?
4. Jedi Knight ; Amazing game both in single and multiplayer
5. Jedi Knight 2 ; It doesn't have the incredible level designs of the first game, but the mechanics are improved

Jedi Outcast is the game you want. Failing that the first Force Unleashed should suffuce.

1. Empire at War: Forces of Corruption (I love Space Battles): Using mods was great too (Old Republic, Legacy, New Republic Era)
2. Knights of the Old Republic 1/2
3. Jedi Knight 1/2
4. Republic Commando
5. Bounty Hunter: Once I understood the Bounty Mechanic, I had a lot of fun.

Not part of the top five
6. Galactic Battlegrounds
2. Rogue Squadron: Rogue Leader

1. Jedi Knight II - Jedi Outcast
2. Dark Forces II - Jedi Knight
3. Shadows of the Empire
4. Rogue Squadron
5. Force Unleashed
