So what did/didn't expect to happen this gen

Things that I saw coming:
Me Buying A Wii

Things I didn't expect:
Me Buying a 360
Me Loosing my Nintendo Fanboyism
Me Selling my Wii

Things I expected:

-Xbox 360 doing much better than the original Xbox.
-Nintendo having shitty 3rd party support yet again.

Things I didn't expect:

-Sony not dominating (both PS3 and DS)
-The kneejerk reaction to the PSP known as the DS doing so incredibly well.
-The Wii selling so well despite it only has a handful of good games.
-The 360 and PS3 not doing high levels of anti-aliasing and anisotropic filtering on every game.

Things I expected:
PS3 helping Bluray more than Bluray helped PS3
PS3 not dominating the way previous PS consoles did
Xbox 360 having a better games library than its previous counterpart.
Xbox 360 doing very well in North America

Things I didn't expect
Wii's unquestionable domination.
And later, Wii not being a fad.

I didn't expect Dante to get the shaft.
I didn't expect to fall in love with a First Person Shooter.(COD4)
I didn't expect to have to fill out a survey every single time I boot up Virtua Fighter 5
I didn't expect all of this nostalgia laced hand held and downloadable tripe getting in the way of real games.

I expected interesting new IP's. I'm still waiting for that.
I expected Nintendo fans to grow up. But instead, they've just added old people to their number.

Did expect:
- 360 doing very well and beating PS3 in the US
- 360 being a failure in Japan (and in most parts of Europe)
- Sony's arrogance and aimlessness
- UMD movie format to die
- FFXIII and GT5 not being released for years
- PS3 *not* setting a 120fps@1080p standard ;)

Didn't expect:
- Wii (and also DS) becoming *that* successful
- PS3 being such a slow seller in Japan
- Blu-ray to win the HD format war (at least not that early)
- the majority of 360 games still being graphically superior to most PS3 titles
- 360's faulty hardware design (aka Ring of Death)
- Sony to release the same (now outdated) controller for the third time in a row
- Petah Moore leaving MS
- Phil Harrison leaving Sony
- Itagaki leaving Tecmo/Team Ninja
- GTA4 being as brilliant as it is
- MS 'releasing' Bungie
- Gamespot to fire Gerstman and to become one of the interweb's most unpopular gaming websites
- Sega Racing Studio to be a) founded and b) closed again after only one (good) game
- and so much more..

The miserable state of the "HD" consoles, largely Playstation 3, causing me to get back into PC gaming.

90% of what I play console wise in 2008 is still on the PS2. PS2, you are a goddamn beast. /salute.

What I expected:

DS Worldwide Domination
North America Being the Xbox 360's only strong territory
PS3 not selling as well as PS2

What I didn't expect:

Wii Domination on Worldwide Scale (especially in Japan)
NiGHTS 2
Monster Hunter 3 Wii
PS3 bombing in Japan
Exclusive JRPGs for 360 (especially Tales of Vesperia)
PSP surviving for more than 2 years
DS more successful than GBA
Lack of major Wii third party support
Guitar Hero doing best on Wii
Wii Sports' popularity
GTA IV failing to move massive amounts of hardware (I'm still saying 'wtf' at this one)

I remember when Nintendo revealed the motion sensing remote for their Wii (formerly known as Revolution). I laughed at the name of the console and the fact that the controller looks like a remote. I don't think that anyone would have predicted the dominance that Nintendo is having.

I saw coming:
Wii becoming a dumping ground for shitty licensed games and kiddy crap
MGS4's great reviews

I didn't expect:
Wii outselling the other two consoles
DS having almost no games I wanted in 07-08
GTA4 being a disappointment
PS3 supporting so many indie games
360 extending their warranty

Dude these are some of DS' best times.

Things I expected
-Sega not improving
-Microsoft doing well
-A lot of rehashes
-More mature FPS style games on 360/PS3

Things I didn't expect
-Uncharted rocking
-Mario Galaxy being amazing
-Mario Kart on wii sucking

Expected:

Graphics whoring reaches monumental levels, at the cost of fun gameplay.

Unexpected:

Nintendo taps into the casual market and fills the void.

Saw coming:
Me owning all the consoles
Microsoft gainging a shitload of ground from last gen
ME becoming an achievement whore
Wii's Cube imitation game library
Devil May Cry 4 on 360

Didn't see coming:
Actually loving all my consoles equally for their respective game libraries
RROD
Developers taking such a long time to exploit the Wii remote
Sony stumbling as bad as they have, I honestly thought they'd dominate as easily as before despite quality opposition
Buying so many PSP and DS games despite the fact that I rarely play both consoles :lol

edit: Yeah, beaten, but Bungie leaving
Sub-HD HD graphics
Uncharted, great game

Didn't Expect

Killzone to blow everyone away at it's first outing since '05
Sony to drop the ball completly
Wii
Phil Harrison leaving
Peter Moore leaving
Bungie moving on
Haze to be so shitty
Damage in GT5

Expected

Sony 1st party to rock hard
FFXIII to go MIA
Halo 3 to sell shit tons

Been a crazy gen so far :O

Things I expected
-Microsoft's dominance over Sony in America
-An expensive launch price for the PS3
-Microsoft failing to dominate in Japan
-Increase in online focus
- That Nintendo would F-up their online somehow..
What I didn't see coming
-JRPGs galore on 360
-The death of the platformer for the first half of this gen :( (hopefully it picks up soon)
-$60 games being the norm
-ithe whole "casual games" phenominon
-The name Wii
-Installing games
-Forced Installs (WTF Sony)
-Multiple Skus (Seriously stop this now)
-The DS's dominance over the PSP
-Wii Shortages 2 years after launch
-The PS3 not selling out day 1
-Activision whoring out the GH franchise as much as they have...

You predicted that the Wii would dominate? If so, then props to you. I must need to level up my "clairvoyance" attribute
I and many others realised Nintendo would repeat their success with the DS, considering they followed almost exactly the same formula. Especially when you took a look at Sony's E3 2006 and lack of direction

I didn't expect my Dad and Mom to be interested in video games. Now my Dad plays Guitar Hero all day on my Wii so I don't get to use it that much often anymore.

:(

Expected:
HD Games
60fps standard
Proper texture filtering
Lossless audio on PS3 games

Did not expect:
Sub-HD games
Awful framerates
Screen tearing
Pre-rendered cutscenes

Didn't expect:

- to not be able to buy a PS3 in Australia that can play PS2 games - biggest WTF ever
- The majority of wii games looking worse than Gamecube games
- Lack of a true 1-1 movement light-sabre game on wii

Did expect:

- huge early price reduction of PS3
- Blu-ray killing HD-DVD
- MS to close gap on Sony this gen

My 60GB is at home screaming with it's hand up wanting to say something.

And some Dick Smith stores still have stock!!!

I'm tempted to buy a backup 60GB.

Expected:
Halo 3 becoming my most played game this gen.
XBL being awesome.
Didn't expect:
Me becoming a PC gamer.
3 Years in this gen and not wanting a PS3 yet.

the big WTF of this gen definitely goes to Nintendo entering the console war with a iron fist and retaking its throne, helped by horrid Sony strategy and getting an underpowered console on first place

I didn't expect Gyakuten Saiban games being SO AWESOME

I didn't expect Mario Galaxy being the best game I have ever played

I didn't expect myself buying a 360

I didn't expect reviewers going batshit insane and giving games like GTA fucking ridiculous and undeserved scores

I didn't expect ME to be a quasi disappointment

Exactly. Anybody who didn't predict Wii dominance after E3 2006 was in massive denial.

To those who doubted the awesomeness of SMG at first, wtf!?

Also noticed a lot of people mentioning Heylo. I'm more surprised that CoD4 outsold it (It did didn't it?) and took the top spot from it.

Things I didn't expect

- Crackdown being one of the best games this gen
- COD4 completely underwhelming me
- The number of freak-awesome XBLA games
- Me playing my PS2 even more this gen than last
- Getting back into MGS to the point where I'm buying a PS3 for it

Things I expected

- Bioshock and Mass Effect delivering the awesome
- Oblivion chewing up 200 hours of my life
- Publishers raping and pillaging with DLC
- Thoroughly enjoying my PSP

I'm surprised so many people weren't expecting Nights 2.

Although I wasn't on this forum at the time, I called Nights 2 on another forum long before the Wii came out, and even called it being ON the Wii as opposed to the other 2.

I must admit, I was heartbroken when:

1) It turned out to be shit and

2) Found out it was originally planned to release on PS360.

I also predicted Virtua Cop on the Wii, which is yet to come to fruition. They've given us House of the Dead, so VC should be just around the corner.

Owning all the consoles - I expected to just get a PS3 and then let the RPGs flow like wine.

Who's the hot asian in your avatar?? Back to the post

What I expected

-DS dominating handhelds
-Nintendo making a comeback with sales

What I didn't expected

-Nintendo to literally dominate the console wars like the NES era, thought Ninty's days of glory were long gone.
-Wii becoming so popular around the world
-PS3 in last place, thought they'd be neck in neck with 360 in sales
-PSP still alive in the handheld market. Glad that they are, as they'll push Nintendo to make the DS2 a graphics handheld that matches the PS2 graphics at least.

Pretty much all of this.

Things I expected:
Street Fighter IV

Things I don't expect:
Monster Hunter 3 for Wii
Tatsunoko Vs Capcom
Buying a PS3

I didn't expect to be so into HD, online gaming as much as I am. Even if it's only the act of being online and seeing what other people are playing, it's still something that pushes me to buy games for those systems.

I also didn't expect to be so underwhelmed by the Wii, outside of multiplayer situations.

Things I Expected
-Wii to kick ass, take names
-Sonic in Smash
-GTA IV to not really help move systems
-Wii Fit to be massive
-Wii to have shitty online
-Lots of FPS and WWII games

Things I didn't expect
-Dragon Quest 9 DS
-Japanese developers drop the next-gen ball
-DS to utterly destroy the PSP
-PS3 to originally retail for such high a cost
-The 360 currently being the console RPG system of choice
-Bioshock to be such a massive hit
-Sin and Punishment, Alien Soldier, and other imports to hit the US VC

Not sure about this one. The original SKUs were 500 and 600. Now they're 400 and 500. To be more accurate, new SKUs were introduced that reduced the price by 1/5 and 1/6 respectively.

I like how the 20 gig is brought up only when it's convenient to the argument.

Really good ones here.

Where the shit did screen tearing come from? Shit is RAMPANT.

I expected Wii to do better than Gamecube.

I did not expect Wii to sell out regularly in America since launch.

I remember many people here saying that anyone would be able to walk into a store and get a Wii at launch easily... hahaha.

Things i expected:

Wii being immensely popular
Square finally whoring out FF7
DS stomping all over PSP
Devil May Cry slowly fading away
Further whoring of the Resident Evil franchise

Things I was pleasently surprised by:

A surge in popularity of Atlus games, specifically SMT and Persona games.
Any games from Konami's PawaPuro series ever coming to America, and receiving SEQUELS :O
PSP getting a lot of good games and decent ports.
MLB 08 The Show being released on the PS2. THANKS GUYS!
TWEWY being pretty popular.

What I did not expect:

Sony_Iceberg.jpg

After seeing their lineup/sales for next gen and the PC I did not expect Take 2 to be in the position they are in now
