So, What Happens to Sony Pictures Now?

Intense scrutiny.

Increase in security. New policies put in place and business will go on.

It will not die or be broken apart.

It will go on because no matter what is leaked such things are all too common really behind the scenes.

I expect Pascal's resignation by the end of January.

Not because it's her fault per se, but the stuff that's out there seems to make her an embarrassment. She won't be able to do press for months.

They're gonna have to bow really, REALLY low for this situation.

I know on the news that they reported Sony has more or less put the entire division on freeze. Production of movies etc. halted. Expect a lot of job casualties

Because The Interview comes out on Christmas and they are still trying to get Sony to stop the release.

If history has taught me anything it's that you gotta strike while the iron is hot. At some point people will get tired of constantly releasing piece by piece info and move on.

Drawing this out and milking stuff is detrimental to their intended cause after a while.

If they release the worst thing right away then they have nothing to hold over Sony's head to try and blackmail them into not releasing the movie.

So if Sony does in fact stop The Interview from releasing (unlikely) or whatever then we'll never get to know what the huge news is... Unfortunate.

I still believe that the NK thing is a red herring

Yeah, I'm not buying it, considering even native speakers have thought the Korean posted reads like a computer translation. Seems more like an insider or some anonymous hack group getting off on all the attention.

Their biggest issue will be their relationships within Hollywood; seeing how they've spoken about actors and all that.

If they put out movies people want to watch I doubt it would affect the movies profitability to have this bad PR. Most people pay no attention to which studio produced a film.

Who gives a shit? This is all gossipy rag bullshit of no real consequence. Not even the evidence of government corruption will affect anything because nobody of any consequence will do anything about it. It's just what goes on in America.

I just wonder how the financial impact of this will affect sony as a corporation. It's not like they are a healthy company overall right now. They do have some divisions that do well like insurance, medical, and games. However, they are bleeding money in others. Not sure how it all ties together for them.

Some people may get fired.

Nothing will really change though. The hackers may be caught and jailed for life, but I don't expect much else.

This is the sad truth.

The Sony info has already overtaken the torture info. Nobody cares and nobody can do anything, even if they did.

Life is fucked up but you just have to get on with it.

Give it a few weeks and everyone will have forgotten about this. Just like every other 'leak', hack and reveal.

I don't know. I was just trying to say that Sony doesn't own the series, that's all.

so, they don't "own" it but they're the only ones that control who can make money off of it in America.

still sounds like the point is moot. that's like saying Marvel owns Spider-Man but since Sony is the only one that can distribute movies with that moniker, then that means Sony doesn't "own" Spider-Man, yet they're the only ones that can make money off it.

Curious if Sony is still going to release the leaked films into theaters next year. I mean, I guess they kind of have to, try and make some money at least, but there's a good chance they won't make money.

They'll fire some sacrificial lambs, they'll start looking at the feedback on projects like Spider-Man and they'll probably restructure a bit

I honestly doubt any of this will become real lawsuits. What is more likely to happen is that Sony will put together compensation packages to apologize and to keep as many people happy as possible. Those who still want to file anything will be paid off down the road, but they'll never work for Sony again.
Or for that matter, any big Hollywood studio. It doesn't seem like an industry that takes too kindly to someone suing their employer.

They will probably fire a few people. But that's it. It will blow over. Sony Pictures are not "Done", "Over", like Gaf thinks they are.

Most of what has leaked is just regular industry stuff. It looks bad to average joe, but it's normal business. Even the really bad stuff.

If we saw e-mails from other big studios. I have a feeling we'd see FAR worse stuff.

It'll be a class action lawsuit not individual employee lawsuits. Sony isn't going to mass fire employees for a class action lawsuit (it'll probably end it a settlement though). Employees suing employers via a class action lawsuit is normal e.g. the recent class action lawsuit from Silicon Valley engineers over the collusion to freeze wages. Sony themselves know they are liable: they were hacked in February but chose to stay silent so they wouldn't be sued..
Gawker said:
Sony says the recent breach of its servers and weeklong cyber humiliation is an "unprecedented" strike and an "unparalleled crime." If they're shocked by these events, they've been shocked for almost a year: leaked emails obtained by Gawker show security troubles dating back to February...

Schaberg decides to stay silent on the matter, and because it's not mandated under Brazilian law, says Sony shouldn't alert anyone that their data was been compromised (emphasis added):
In terms of a notification obligation, Brazil does not have a breach notification law. Although the Brazilian Constitution, Civil Code, and Consumer Protection Code contain general provisions on privacy protection, and data subjects are entitled to indemnification for moral and material damages that result from a violation of their privacy, based on the facts known thus far I recommend against providing any notification to individuals given a) the lack of a notification requirement; b) the limited data fields involved; and c) the fact that notifying would not likely have much effect in terms of mitigating potential damages.

What line could sting more for a current Sony employee, whose passwords and social security numbers are now being traded like commodities, than "I recommend against providing any notification to individuals given"? The company was breached by outside attackers, and the most important thing for Sony was that their name wasn't attached—a search of Brazilian outlets still shows no results or disclosures of the theft...
Different laws in the USA and this time the hackers publicized the hack

I'll just leave this here:

"Sony Pictures May 14 (2014) reported fourth-quarter (ended March 31) operating income of $402 million, up 112% from operating income of $190 million during the prior-year period.
The film unit, which includes Sony Pictures Home Entertainment, saw studio revenue increase 12.8% to $1.3 billion. TV production revenue increased more than 82% to $952 million, while media networks revenue increased 6% to $361 million.
For the fiscal year, Sony Pictures increased operating income 8% to $501 million on revenue of $8 billion, which was up 13.2% from last year."

Yeah. Email leaks are just gonna flatline all this recent success in a week or two. Yep. Disastrous. What is Kaz thinking not shuttering them asap, and firing all those useless execs?

I hope nothing because if anything does the hackers win

Everyone is talking about the leaks, the media is eating it all up and shitting it back out in a variety of clickbait and sensationalized headlines for each leak they find, people just can't wait for the next leak, when the hackers promise a "Christmas surprise" instead of being horrified and outraged, people are actually anticipating it. I'll say they already won.

Sony has no choice but to lay off the entire upper management of Sony Pictures. The content of those emails has probably poisoned all of them for decades, if not forever.

I can only imagine the sort of scrubbing that's going on at all of the other Hollywood studios right now, but it might be too late. I certainly wouldn't be shocked if this group has broken into multiple studios' computer networks and Sony was simply the first one they decided to expose.

Hah forreal? They will be released and make money. First of all, the 5 leaked films are not all 2015 films. One was Fury, which had already been released at the time. the 3 2014 ones were:
-Annie: 8 year old kids are torrenting this frequently enough to kill b.o.? No, they're still whining for their parents to take them
-Still Alice and Mr. Turner: limited releases angling for awards recognition. These kinds of movies are not impacted by illegal viewing as much as center-lane male 18-34 action e.g. Expendables 3. Grandparents are still going to go to Still Alice after they read a favorable print review and talk through the entire thing

I think you're right. Kind of like the iCloud selfie pic hack; pictures were amassed over a large period of time and then denzelboom.gif

Hackers seem to be getting more and more brazen. Governments are next, surely :/

I just don't get this line of thinking...I mean, poisoned for decades? What? Tell me, why exactly would producers and talent not want to work with Michael Lyndon and Co. on movie projects moving forward? You think if Pascal and one of the Ellison kids greenlight a 200m blockbuster in a month, any actor is going to give a crap that their alias got leaked in a hacker attack a while back, and not want the work? Etc etc.

Who is asking for anyone's head outside of Sharpton? Jolie and Kevin Hart? And people who want Marvel to take Spiderman?
