I mean back when I growing up in the 80's/90's computers, video games, star trek were considered for nerds/geeks. I can't imagine this being the case nowadays so what is it?

Emotional investment in any such things. If you play CoD randomly or some wii game or rock band at a party, no big deal. Be anywhere near actively considering yourself a gamer, and you're a nerd. Likewise, everyone uses twitter and facebook, but actual understanding of computers is nerdy.
