So....What is going on with Katt Williams?

Dude at his peak was the shit and could have been a great one. Kevin sucks, he went the safe route which I understand for business purposes.
 
Matt seems like a smart dude and it's crazy how well he puts on his act, but then he does stuff like the anti-atheist bit and I have to wonder.

Too bad, though, I like his specials. Don't get the hate.
 
He's like the comedian's version of a pop star: popular for a moment, but in time people realize there wasn't actually much substance there and they move on.

And I say that as someone who used to think he was hilarious.

Also Kat Williams is one of the worst and most over-hyped comedians out there. Prior's stuff still fucking shits all over his act from on top of a skyscraper.

Yeah, I say that he seems schizophrenic due to this rant (and other rants) combined with the fact that he can speak so well in other situations (e.g.: interviews). Many who have it have a great vocabulary to the point in which they sound smart/intelligent even if what they say makes no sense whatsoever.

So yeah, I'm pretty sure he has mental issues.

I don't think that's a fair comparison at all. Who ever said that Katt was better than Prior besides young people who don't even know who Richard Prior is? Richard Prior is top 3, if not the best stand up of all time. He is god tier of stand up comedy. Even Louis CK isn't near the Prior/Carlin level. The only guy to get close to that level since them was Eddie Murphy in the 80s, and that was only for a few years. Richard Prior still shits on the best working stand ups in the world.

That's like taking a great actor today and saying "well, he's not as good as Pacino/De Niro in their primes". Well, not many people are.

The truth is the soul of observational comedy. Problem is when he is saying shit like "why we still got monkeys?" or doing freestyles, well then he isn't being funny anymore. I loved his old stuff. Very sad to see him fall off.

He was on top of the world like two years ago and now he's ranting and raving like a crackhead at his shows. This is like the the fourth major meltdown he's had that I've seen and he's been in and out of jail/court for assaulting people lately.

He was going nuts two years ago too. Summer before last he started completely blowing off shows.

I think he finally realized that his reputation as a comedian was much, much larger than his actual ability as a comedian, and he's drowned his fear of inevitably being figured out to be a bit of a fraud with drugs and booze and being crazy.

I'm not saying he is completely unfunny, or a hack, or anything like that. I'm just saying he was being promoted as the next great African American comedian--in the same breath as Prior, Eddie, Chris, and Dave--and that was clearly a classification he did not deserve, and an impossible level of expectation for him to live up to with his talent level.

Sadly, Patrice was the guy who deserved that mantel, but for the most part, he never got that extreme level of respect from anyone but his peers--the comedians--until he died.
 
katt is a straight gangsta. he's rhyming here, i don't see how this is a meltdown. he's funny but i wouldn't want to associate with him if i knew him in person

Oh, well that's crazy. Any comedian that says that about himself is crazy. I didn't watch the video at first. Now I have. He didn't compare himself to Pryor, but he did compare himself to Carlin and Eddie Murphy. What's weird is that Carlin had like 12 specials. He was doing one every two years or so for close to 30 years. That whole thing was so uncomfortable. Anytime you're rolling with Suge Knight, you need to question your life. There is some dark shit brewing in that little man's head right now.

Everything i've seen of Kevin Hart was him trying too hard to be funny and coming off corny.

Let it be known I'm not a particular fan of either comedian. Then again I'm old enough to have had exposure to the brilliance that was Pryor, Murphy, Red Foxx. Even going as far back as flip Wilson and moms Mabley.

I personally think Katt had a better brand behind him with the pimp/hustler personality and to me it was really funny because he was a little guy with a big guy mentality. Kev just seemed to focus on the fact that he was small and it was more of a hey I'm short look at me swing my feet from this bar stool. Katt + drugs + kevin harts timing emerging on the scene hurt Katt in my opinion.
 
He had a very brief moment in time when he was hilarious. And then drugs and ego turned him into a complete fucking moron.
 
He's never been funny. So angry his silly angry black man act ever saw an inkling of success. Kevin Hart is ten times the comedian this hack is, and I'm extremely happy for his success.

I feel like Katt's peak was really, really short. Like, one day he was blowing up and the next day he got caught with a loaded gun at an airport or something. Keep in mind I am white so maybe I just heard of him late.

Someone mentioned Suge Knight, that's perfect. His career arc really does seem like it belongs with Death Row Records.
 
The Dane Cooke of black comedians, all style no substance, just screams random shit he believes with his funny voice and it gets people going. No actual punchline at all, the guy seems very stupid as well.
 
I'm basing this off of a single Comedy Central special, but I found myself thinking my racist family more racist after showing me a Katt Williams special they thought was hilarious. I've found myself laughing a few times from in some of the links that have been posted, but for the most part his act comes across as really pandering an archetype. The people saying he was good in the day, can you link something?
