• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

So what's on your wish list for Pokemon on the Switch?

It seems like they haven't been adding a lot of new Pokémon to each installment. I would love them to Black/White it with every creature being brand new again.

Furthermore, fully 3D. Like give us a Mario Oddyssey camera level of freedom. Also, no separate battle screens. A wild Pokémon pops out? Battle starts with no transition. Same with trainers. Fully customizable characters too please, and make the options extremely deep.

Also maybe offer online quests you can go on with friends, and an online world where you can interact with strangers via battling and trading, or even just showing off your team. Maybe even offer an option to create your own gym others can challenge when you're online.

Finally, include past regions. I don't want them to be exactly as they were; update them with storyline revelations (such as new towns, characters, scenarios.) Like do Kanto twenty years after Red/Blue/Yellow, or Johto etc. Do them as DLC.

  • Mega Evolutions.
  • Secondary region.
  • Character customization.
  • Decent post-game content.
  • Good framerate. None of that 15FPS+
  • Z-Moves, but modified. Sped up, available to more Pokemon.
  • Legendaries/Mythicals with puzzle-like elements to obtain them.

Also, I would be fine with a remake of Diamond/Pearl since I didn't play them on DS.

Events and free DLC. They can keep the formula exactly the same as far as I care, but I hope they give it modern conveniences.

I'd love Pokemon to take on a few games as service elements. A constant stream of new mini-quests, with opportunities to see and catch new Pokemon. Would keep me coming back, and make the world feel more dynamic.

I'd like a step back from the world saving stories. A simple narrative based around gathering the badges and winning the Pokémon league would be a refreshing change of pace.

And with that in mind, make he Pokémon league an actual tournament like the anime, and implement a nemesis system with trainers you've encountered through out your journey.

Do you mean more unique Z-moves? Because theyre usable by all Pokemon already

Oh yea, I hope they never make any new Mega Evolutions. Stick to regional variants or even Z-Moves, but that's it.

1. Let me choose the pokemon I want at the start of battle. This default shit doesn't cut it anymore. It makes no sense for your trainer to send out a mismatched type only to call it back right away. At least add it as an option.

2. What if you could romance NPCs/ Gym leaders and have children with them. Then you could play a sort of New Game+ as the child trainer. They could even work in a Gym Leader system with your kid taking over as the new leader for whatever gym leader you married.

retcon of the dex.

consolidation and expansion.

Boofalo is afro Taurus. Make it an evolution or a variant model.

Amolamola is an evolution of luvdisc, make it "canon." because otherwise, wtf.

Or have a second story set ten years after you have kids where your kid has started their own Pokemon adventure and has hunted you down for abandoning them to travel the world.

Absolutely no first 3 gens of pokémon. Keep them for future Fire Red/Leaf Green switch remakes. I want gen 8 to have only 4-5-6-7-8 gen Pokémon. Even 4 is too ancient for my tastes.

Secondly, I think we're ready for 16 gym region. And after we beat them all, we deserve even stronger E4 5, starts with level 67-68, ends with lv 78-80.

Taken from a thread I made a little while ago
With Gamefreak developing a main Pokémon generation on the Switch, I've been thinking about how GF can utilize this new hardware and I've come to this conclusion, the Nemesis system.

Now, just a recap on what the Nemesis system actually is. The Nemesis system (in SoM) is when you engage specific orcs in battle and if you win but don't kill them, they return with scars, giving you lip and having an opportunity to fight/kill them again. Likewise, if you lose, they will brag about their feat and once again engage in battle. It allowed these fights to be much more personal and thus more engaging. But how will this work with Pokémon?

I'm glad you asked!

I would like to present to you the Roaming Trainer. Unlike typical trainers scattered throughout the region, Roaming Trainers are Pokémon trainers, just like you, who have also accepted the Pokémon League challenge and as such will not have themed Pokémon in their party but a variety of types offering you some level of challenge.

Here's the big difference, if you lose a battle to a Roaming Trainer, you will not be given an opportunity to fight them immediately (upon returning from the PokeCenter) but they will instead "continue their journey" and you'll get a chance to fight them again albeit with their team being stronger later on. Likewise, if you were to win, they will remember their loss and their team will be stronger than if you lost to them, when you re-encounter them.

Their dialogue will be varied based on whether you win or lose to them and you will find them more than once throughout your journey. It's a neat way creating a much more personal experience trainer to trainer but also it won't feel like you're challenging the Pokémon League alone (or just your rival), it'll feel like a living breathing Pokémon world where other trainers seek the glories of winning it all.

Speaking of the Pokémon League, I have an additional idea to add. I want the Victory Road to be removed (or re-purposed) and create an actual competition with the Roaming Trainers acting as the competitors. It'll be just like the anime. I would also like to incorporate the Elite Four challenge as a sort of trail for defeating the Pokémon League but I haven't thought that far.

I only hope it can be way more difficult, single player wise. I am not sure if it is just me but I am not competitive online and not into breeding Pokemon for online battles. I just wish the single player part can be challenging enough.

On a sidenote, which is the most challenging Pokemon game on 3DS right now? I only got Pokemon X which is way too easy..

Hard mode (smarter AI, higher levels), trainers having bigger teams across the board, IVs on the stat screen instead of only on the PC, and lots of move tutors.

1) I want a traditional Pokémon game. I hope Game Freak don't feel obliged to mess with a wining formula to cater to TVs.

2) Fast Bank Support , if not day 1. I need Empoleon in all things.

3) Better battle animations. If there's one area I DO want Game Freak to improve to cater to TVs, it's this. Even just lifting the battle presentation from Pokémon Battle Revolution with better models would be a huge step up.

Sun and Moon wrecked me so I'd say difficulty wise they probably arent gonna be too bad

Sun & Moon, though I did refrain from Z-Moves in order to assist with that. Even so, still the most difficult one. Though B/W2 has a challenge mode, though I don't think it's immediately accessible.

Honestly, give me good post game content. Please. Let me beat the game and then a whole new region opens up. It could be Kanto or somewhere else, but please. Lots of post game content is a must.

I just want to see some more common sense in the game's design. The execution for some features in Sun/Moon were sloppy, and some things were downright idiotic.

Competitive Safari Zone region. Separate from the offline version, you and other trainers have to collect a certain amount of types within a time limit. A special event that happens every once in a while like splatfests.

  • 3D third person camera control movement in an open world with no gating preventing you from going wherever you want to
  • Narrative freedom, more things to do than just becoming a champion, more ways to interact with the world and characters besides battling in general
  • Avoid the same evil team trying to acquire box legendary plot from all the games after gen 3
  • More sidequest type of stuff, and more social link type stuff that S/M already kind of had (going back to the captains and doing stuff like going to the restaurant with Olivia)
  • Better writing
  • Voice Acting (humans only, Pokémon should all use the original cries they were introduced with)
  • Perhaps randomize the dex per playthrough, so you have a specific number subset of the full 800+, different each replay instead of a specific region selection
  • More customization options, and more of them upfront at the start
  • New Megas
Agree with all of this. Two things I'd add would be the return of seasons and your pokemon following you around.

Is this really necessary? The Pokémon models are already future-proofed for HD use, no need to scrap assets that are ready to go for the Switch. Just update the textures & they're good.

or how about they don't over indulge and dole it out as they see fit. they're a company after all. expecting them to show up with a shit ton of pokemon is crazy, plus people my age have some sort of disposable income and a reverence for the OG's. You pop those guys in a game we've collectively wanted for 20 years then you got a stew goin.

Personally I'd just be happy with better graphics, more customization, and if they kept things more consistent. No more saving things for the director's cut.

Easy/Hard Mode (B2W2)
Move Tutors (Emerald)
Battle Tower/Tree/Frontier/etc. (Crystal)
Super Training & Hyper Training (XY/SM)
Eon Flute/Pokemon Ride (ORAS/SM)
Dex Nav (ORAS)
Pokemon Following Behind You (Yellow/HGSS)

Okay, but there's love for the other 650+ Pokemon lol, no need for them to focus only on the original 151.

They can do whatever in my book as long as it doesn't look like a 3ds game on the switch.

Was just going to post something like this.

There's a lot of fantasy stuff I would like, but still rather it be a Pokemon game at its core. Just hope it's utilizing the switch to it's potential.

A meaty post-game (as in, not just the Battle Whatever and maybe a route or two). ORAS's was passable, but man were XY and SM's post-games over quickly. Give me a Platinum-esque one at minimum. I've barely touched Sun since beating it, while the older games still get booted up occasionally. The regional dex can consist of Kakuna and Metapod for all I care; as long as the after game keeps me engaged, I'm satisfied.

Fix the framerate, too. Double battles make the 3DS run slower than a Macho Brace Slowpoke. You can practically count the frames during some of the more graphically intense moves.

Make Hyper Training more accessible. Level 100 is fine, but make the grind to it attainable, without having to go into the Festival Plaza. Speaking of which, the Plaza fucking sucks. Bring back the PSS, or something equally user friendly.

Oh, and give Kommo-o Close Combat already. Poor thing flubs his Sky Uppercuts WAY too often.

-BotW-styled open air world

-Pokemon battles on the field instead of cutting to a battle scene.

-The lead pokemon in the party-no scratch that, THE ENTIRE PARTY following the player.

-Red/Misty confirmed canon.

-Ditch the fire/water/grass starter trinity. In fact, players shouldn't be given free hand-outs at all, they should go out & earn their 1st capture damn it!

-Cosmetic customization options for Pokemon. Admittedly with somewhere in the neighborhood of a thousand different models, providing enough options for all of them might be too much.

With what Pokemon tho

All Pokemon are available in game except the original 151.

Eat it, nerds.

They pretty much did that once in Black and White, only they extended it by another 300 pokemon and then relaxed it a bit after you beat the game. I liked it a lot actually.

tbh I've been bored by the Pokemon formula since Gen IV. I don't expect them to vary from the formula too much as long as it's raking in the dough, but I wish they'd make a high budget spin-off that was just as compelling. It could be that open world MMO / MMO lite that people always pine over, something more action based, or even a different style of RPG. Just make it a little more cerebral / complex and I'll be into it.

This sounds amazing. Refresh it all. Types, weaknesses, skillsets, attrs, pokemon, everything

That's something I hadn't thought about, and I'd be totally down for most of it. Rebalance the type chart so Ice and Rock aren't so fucked, hand out several secondary types, rework every evolution's BST, rework movepools, and redistribute abilities.

Oh yeah, and stop sticking starters with Blaze/Torrent/Overgrow. Make their HA's the default, give them one alternative, and have it determined randomly like any other Pokemon's would. Sure it would make some of them a bit strong for the main game, but those three abilities are just so freaking boring, and you're stuck with them until Gamefreak decides that they feel like distributing HA starters.

a Psychic/Dark/Fighting starter trio would be cool imo

The Psychic users would be screwed against the Dark type option though. Well maybe not screwed since there are other attacks, but it's bad form imo to have one of the choices be a type that's completely ineffective against another.

I feel like a good compromise would be for the Pokemon you come across early on to be more varied type-wise. Like a small example of this would be Talonflame's pre-evolution form. Having the standard early normal-type bird Pokemon also double as a fire type was pretty cool.

Forgot about Dark immunity, shit

Also, thats one thing i feel S/M did really well. On just the first island you could catch fairy and ghost types, which was rad

-No mmo
-Easier Breeding
-No exclusive legendaries like the first game (not gonna happen)
-New Megas.
-Hard mode with some gym leaders using real strats, double battles with weather, double dancers, calm mind tanks, good items on every pokemon and level scaling on the gym leader to force you to understand how to beat them and not only having more levels that them)
-Calling switch/set modes easy/normal this is a minor change, but most people dont even realize set mode exists and the game becomes laughably easy on switch mode.
-More balancing for 1 vs 1 online battles and rankeds for 1v1 (If I remember correctly, that queue was for 2v2 only).

-No more gen1 focus

That doesn't have to come at the cost of the other Pokémon, not to mention any new Pokémon that will likely come along.

they should do it like dragon quest xi for 3DS where you can have a 3D version of the game or a pixel art version of the game
