• Hey Guest. Check out your NeoGAF Wrapped 2025 results here!

So what's the digital/physical split on GAF?

70/30 physical on console and handheld. The only exception is PC. All digital there. Bought more digital games compared to physical games in the last few years. Steam, GMG, GoG and indie bundles have spoiled me. =/

PS3/PS4: Mainly physical(~80%). Digital if there are sales.
PSV: Physical if I could find R1 card(~10%). Otherwise digital. I'm living in R3 region with R1 PS+ account.

PC - All digital

PS Vita - All Digital

PS4 - All Digital

PS3 - All Digital (Have sold all physical games)

Wii-U - All Physical (Due to Acc system and cost)

Really is nice not having game boxes everywhere but that being said I did purchase my PS4 using funds from the sale of physical games so next gen will be more costly for me.

After 50/50 on the PS4 so far and 95/5 on the PS3 I'll go maximum physical on the PS4 as well. I thought I'd be over it with the easier, faster UI on the PS4 but I really do miss having an collection . Reminds me of my SEGA Genesis days.

Everything I have purchased for my PS4 since January 1, 2015 has been digital. Kind of slid into it but I really like being able to easily switch games without the disc hassle.

Cheers

I'm all physical, except when the game is digital only.
When there's a game that was digital only and later gets a physical release (like Shovel Knight) I tend to double dip.

Any game I buy on console or handheld I get physical, but I mostly buy games on steam so I get a bunch more digital games now.

With my Ps4 I try to be mostly physical. I think my only PS4 digital games are ps plus and any don't have physical releases.

I want to do physical with Vita, but with the sales on the digital versions and the lack of discounted prices(or just even having the physical copies) in the stores around me, it pushes me to a lot of digital. I'd say for Vita it's 70% digital 30% physical.

I tend to go for physical more often than not, because I like having the option to share and sell my games. For PC I'm all digital.

However, if PSN has a great sale or physical isn't an option, I'll definitely get the game digitally.

I buy physical for consoles, I specifically try to not buy digitally when it comes to consoles, both home and handheld.

Handheld even more so, it's just easier to deal with 3DS carts in the future.

Digital for PC.

I buy digital when I want to get the game early from the US PSN store, otherwise if it comes out at the same time as here or if I don't really care about getting it early I buy physical.

Physical expect for the occasional DLC (think Blood Dragon quality) and PS+

- I would be buying The Old Blood for Wolfenstein if it were not digital only. Now I will just wait for a GOTY physical.

I went digital only in this Gen. That means Xbox One, PS4, Wii U as well as my new 3DS are digital only. I love the convenience to start every game instantly without switching the disc/cartridge and I don't sell used games anyways.

For me digital only is the best solution but I understand people who wants to have something physical in their hands, collect fancy boxes/limited editions or want to sell used games.

Mainly physical because it is cheaper, and the game will always be available even if servers go down, console crashes, etc.

Mostly physical, so I can still play after the servers go down ... With a few exceptions like Driveclub, where most of the game isn't on the disc and/or for quick pickup and play titles.

Obviously, I buy a lot of indies so that category mostly is digital.

Digital all day! But that's mostly because I don't care about owning physical media at all, and I'm too lazy to go to the store when I can just download it. PSN has been slow as fuck for me the last couple of months though, so if that keeps up I might need to start buying some discs again.

Vita: All physical (except for the games it came with). Life's too short to clean out your closet and I play it so rarely, I have no intention of upgrading the memory card.

3DS and Wii U: Mostly physical unless there's an eShop exclusive or a game I'd like to have with me at all times. (Ex: Animal Crossing, Mario Kart.)

PC: Mostly digital.

Xbox 360: Mostly Physical.

I don't either way - But it really comes down to price.

If physical is £45 and digital is £50. I'll just get digital as it's much easier.

-Physical for Consoles
-Digital for PC
-Digital for PS Vita
-Physical with the 3DS as I refuse to buy anything off the eshop until Nintendo changes the way their digital license with bought content works.

PS4: Mostly digital, for remote play
XB1: Mix but mostly physical. may change if they get remote play soon and it works on android.
PC: All digital
Vita: All digital for portability. Also crossbuy.

100% digital already, I'm done with physical, although it pains me to pay more for versions that should cost less (PSN). Game industry, how does it work?

If it's an option I go physical, I don't see the benefit in going digital as I am not saving money and I forgo my right to trade and resell games.

With retail I still have that right.

I have gone all digital on current gen consoles. I love the convenience of bouncing quickly between games, saving shelf space, and avoiding the possibility of someone breaking into my apartment and stealing my video games (it has happened).

PC - 100% Digital
PS4 - 60% Digital
PS Vita - 90% Physical
3DS - 95% Physical
Wii U - 95% Physical
Movies - 100% Digital
Books - 80% Digital

Regarding media that I am not buying 100% digitally:

PS4, Vita, Wii U, 3DS:
A lack of backwards compatibility, license transferring and limited storage has prevented me from going digital on most consoles. With the PS4, I'm starting to value shelf space and convenience more so I'm beginning to shift to mostly digital there. Unless there is a really nice collector's edition, I'll probably be buying future PS4 games digitally.

Books:
Some books are not available digitally and some books are nice to own physical copies of like art books, game guides, cook books, special editions, etc.

I'm a mix. Depending on the platform and game. I will usually give preference to physical copies though, unless the digital ones are immensely cheaper.

I only buy digital when physical isn't an option, at least 99% of the time.

This, I'm a collector and having a digital collection just doesn't interest me as much. Not to mention a lot of what I'm interested in doesn't have a digital release.

I'm 120% digital. That extra 20% is charitable donations to all digital providers to make the collapse of Gamestop come that much sooner.

PC, Vita, PS3 (with just a couple exceptions) all digital. Wii U/3DS though are maybe 25% digital, due to the well known lack of a good account system. When I get a PS4 eventually, I will probably go mostly digital (but likely at first will buy a bunch of cheap used games that I missed out during the first year or two, and re-buy during digital sales as they come up).

I get super annoyed dealing with physical media these days. Seems archaic. I dumped being a physical collector a few years ago and it feels awesome. I love the simplicity and convenience of digital, along with the nice clean look of not having a bunch of cases laying around to satisfy some silly need to stare at. It was hard to do at first, but it's been pretty liberating.

PS4: 5 digital, 1 physical
PS3: 3 digital, 34 physical
XBO: 3 digital, 1 physical
Wii U: 2 digital, 3 physical
PC: All digital
3DS: All physical

So, I am all over the place honestly. But, with PS4 and XBO, I am trying to be mostly digital.

I buy mostly digital copies now. If a game is physical only (or the physical copy is cheaper or has lots of extras) I have no problem picking it up but I will prefer the digital copies if all is equal.

For the people that refuse to buy digital versions, why is this? I am not understanding why a good game would be skipped because there is no physical copy.
