So ... when did Avril Lavigne learn to sing?

As the Sabres went down in flames at the end of the 3rd period, I started flipping through the channels and noticed there was an Avril concert playing on Palladia. My interest piqued for the train wreck, I decided to watch it.

I must say, I'm a bit confused. I had viewed one or two live songs on YouTube, where she seemed to be a bit wasted. Let's just say they were about what I'd expect. A cute chick, who was only passable when in the studio.

Either she's gotten a lot better, or the few train wreck songs I heard were an anomaly. First off, her singing. It isn't just that it was passable, at times it was good ... really good. Initially I thought maybe she was lip-syncing. As I continued to watch it dawned on me - no, she's actually singing, and not being familiar with many of her songs (other than the ones killed on radio), I started to realize, her voice ain't half-bad. She actually has some control, and some pipes. One thing I had noticed previously, when singing higher registers ... she sounds a bit like Alanis. Must be a Canadian thing, or something to do with having first names that start with an 'A'. Whatever it is, the comparison was cemented watching this show. They share a very similar tone for their higher octave vocalizations, as well as doing a similar 'crack' at the end of certain notes.

Whatever, the point is that I came away pretty impressed by her voice. What really surprised me however was that she can actually play instruments while singing. At first she did a song or two with some guitar. No biggie, just some rhythm stuff ... though I was a bit surprised when I realized I could actually hear her guitar - it wasn't just for show.

She then ended up playing a song on piano as well. While I was aware she wrote most of her music, I was a bit surprised to see her singing and playing something that was obviously out in the front of the song. There wouldn't be any hiding if she fucked it up.

Then I became EXTREMELY confused. She asked the crowd if they wanted to hear her play some drums. I was like wtf?, but figured she'd just do some really terrible attempt at a solo and call it a day. No, she instead actually played the drums while singing the song ... and then did the same thing for the next one.

What the hell is going on? I feel like my world has been turned upside down. She actually seems to be a competent musician, sings pretty fucking well live, and writes most of her own stuff (even if most of it is just radio-friendly pop).

As stated, I came away confused ... and surprisingly impressed.

She's Canadian, everyone knows they can't pronounce words correctly, so maybe she came to the states a few times too many.

I've always thought she was a good singer, honestly. Much better than most pop singers.

And she's just so cute.

She's always come across to me as someone who can legitimately sing.

Her singing doesn't really matter, does it.

Did you mute and fap? :D

Well, my initial interest was to see how bad she was ... so no, I didn't mute it.

Instead, I came away surprisingly impressed.

I guess it's easy to be suspicious of pop stars these days, and with good reason, but she's always had a decent history of singing before making her big break with her first studio album. I've heard that she used to do country songs before making it into the studio system.

Yeah I have heard her live once. She was good, not great. Definately not bad.

She's popular and "mainstream," so naturally received a lot of hate from everyone not in the Top 40 demographic, and/or girls who were envious of/threatened by her looks. Happens all the time. She's always been cool in my book.

I thought her second CD was an awesome pop album. It seemed like she was maturing and doing her own thing. Then her newest came out, and "Girlfriend" was catchy, but the album was just bubblegum pop shit. She went backwards.

This is the correct response. She's fuckable with some talent. That's money.

She's a Canuck performer, so i expect a certain level of hidden awesomeness. FWIW, i've always found her music to be pretty fun. It is pop, after all.

i'd find a shitty excuse to post pics (this thread lacks them), but i'm on an equally shitty GPRS connection.

Haha, suck it. Figures that a Sabres fan's second choice after watching a game would be an Avril Lavigne concert :lol

just kidding man

About Avril, I heard that thing about her doing Country songs before getting the whole skater-chick image forced onto her. Too bad she didn't keep doing that because other than a few catchy songs, her music is pretty shit.
She does seem like a more accomplished musicians than what you'd expect from someone doing the kind of music she is doing though.

This thread wasn't meant to go down that path, but what the heck.

While this is old news, I was surprised to see her morph from a cute, pseudo-punk chick, to stupidly pretty some years back.

I mean, yeah, there was always hotness potential ... but I certainly didn't expect her to become so beautiful.

:lol wow, now that you mention it... she really does look like bowie in that picture...

shit, now im just confused.

In my opinion, Avril has always been a competent musician and singer but most people wouldn't give her a chance. I remember commeting some years back that she was great live except that she seemed statue-like. It was probably just the video I was watching (some award show) but I wasn't impressed by her stage presence. However, her music is excellent, especially her more somber pieces, and I put it on when I write since it gets me in the mood (and the singing voice is how I sometimes imagine my main character would sound if she sang). In fact, Innocence was the song my wife and I used for our first dance at our wedding.

Eh. Looks like your average white girl.

Looks wise, I definitely think she looks better with dark hair. Then again, I am turned off completely by blonde hair and anything near a black or deep red is attractive to me.

Who's not giving her chance? It's obvious she's been fairly popular for years now.

Yes. Go to a modern day college campus and you'll find plenty of sorority girls that outclass her..
I go to a modern day college campus. I see maybe 1 or 2 girls a week that look better than Avril.

That's in a school of 40,000.
