Don't know wtf makes a "game of the gen," but two games I've enjoyed very much are Super Mario Galaxy and Portal.

@ Steiner_Zi: Or maybe I've got good taste and you don't. :lol

or maybe, just maybe, he likes JRPGs more then stealth action.

The candidate wins.

BTW: GTAIV was the first game of the series that I liked.

As I said. I don't care what others say.

Mass Effect and Gears are the two games I've enjoyed the most.

I was going to say Gears, but after reading everything about the sequel, I see no reason to, as the superior game is surely coming....:D

I'm sure this will be locked at some point. Before that point someone needs to mention Mario Kart Wii, so I'll go ahead and do that.

For me, it's been Bioshock thus far. With Mass Effect, GTA IV, and MGS4 being right up there as well.

My game of last gen however was God of War II, so it's pretty likely that the best is yet to come.

NeoFAQs indeed. I'm not complaining, though!

you know I'm gonna be pissed when bioshock hits ps3 and the game turns out to be bad after all the gaf hype

Super Mario Galaxy, by far. Leveldesign is absolutely awesome, controls are perfect, there wasn't a single moment in this game I felt bored or even just uncomfortable.

To all of you saying MGS4... please ensure that you have actually completed the game and that its just not the hype talking.

Lets elaborate more on why we think these games are contenders...

It's not a bad game, and it looks very niceÂ… but in no way is it the best game this generation. Then again I may be predisposed to thinking so, as I played System Shock 2 when it came outÂ…

This topic is hilarious though, I'd be surprised if many people have the same opinion even next year, let alone by the end of the generation.

I will say Dead Rising, because it is cool to be different and I want to be cool!

Dead Rising has so many positives; so much potential. Something is missing though. Still a fucking awesome game IMO.

It's just Mario Galaxy. The only game this generation that kept providing new stuff gameplay-wise, to the very last hub, to the very last star. The most important thing about the galaxy theme isn't the gravity, it's that there are no boundaries to level design and no real need to keep levels logical.

Super Mario Galaxy is glorious. It's the best 3D platformer I've played and nothing this gen on the other platforms has amazed me as much as SMG.

I bought the steam version for $30 since I own a PS3. I'm having a hard time enjoying it. I'm going to give it another shot though.

I liked Mass Effect more than anything else this gen but the GAME portion itself wasn't spectacularly great or genre-defining or anything.

MGS4 for me. It danced all over my nostalgia button shortly before kicking me in the face...I loved it. Mass Erect is a very close second though.

The elimination of the "invisible wall" was firggin' HUUUGE.

k, Kojipro am gods and the game is full of win octocamo, using MK II as a weapon, scout, and camera. weapon selection and customization, the small touches kojipro put into it make the game stand out i.e “ghosts” among other things.

IIDX Go(ooooooooooooo)ld.

I know this because it will be the one game released in 2008 which I will play the most in 2008. The end.

Rather than elaborate on that, I'll give my view on those initially listed -

GTA4 - Good, but flawed. Even though the game wore thin by the end it was still good enough to justify finishing at least. That being said, I don't forsee a reason to play it again any time soon, if not ever.

MGS4 - Watching the gf play through it was enough. Very pretty to spectate but I have no desire to play the game at all. I now know all parts of the story and me playing the game wouldn't really prove or expand upon a god damned thing, so why should I waste my time. Too much action and gunplay for a stealth game, as far as I'm concerned, as well. It also seems funny to me that for all the knocks GTA4 (deservedly) gets for its melee combat system, MGS4's isn't much more intricate. Is it supposed to be? I don't know. Is a protagonist in a stealth game supposed to be able to carry around several hundred pounds of guns on his person at all times? I don't know.

Bioshock - I'm still burned out on FPSes and the perpetual hype each and every one of them get. The game looks good and is well made but, again, I don't see a reason why I should spend my money or time on it.

Galaxy - A few minutes of playing this on a demo kiosk was all I needed, thank you very much. For all of the alleged brilliant level design, production values, soundtrack presentation, even the nice overall space motif which I do find appealing - none of that changes the fact that the game entails nothing more than you nagivating Mario around from Point A to B. I could give a shit about Mario. Moving Mario from Point A to B is no longer entertaining to me and not an activity which I deem worth spending my time and money upon. Super Mario 64 is the last Mario game I'll ever need to play for the rest of my life. Sorry.

1. Call of Duty IV (360/PS3)
1. Metal Gear Solid IV (PS3) [haven't finished, opinion at the moment, tied for first]
3. Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
4. Grand Theft Auto IV (360/PS3)
5. Super Smash Brothers Brawl (Wii)

Mass Effect - It's just my kind of game. A western style RPG/Shooter. Dialogue trees. A story I can care about. Characters I can care about. Working along party members. Science fiction. Customization. Create your character. Open ended. Re-playability. It's just a mesh of theme, genre, and gameplay that I tend to enjoy. It's not perfect by any means, but it touches all the right places for me.

Bioshock - As with ME, this hits on a lot of areas that I am just more prone to enjoy. The science fiction/horror theme was right up my alley ever since I saw the first screenshots years ago. There is more to it then that though...It's actually hard for me to explain my enjoyment of this game. It just has a lot of intangibles.....the best thing I can say about it is that I feel it's one of, if not the, most polished game I have ever played.

There is a lot of talk lately (Lately as in, just in general this gen) about games as art, and so on and so fourth. A lot of gamers just seem like they want to be able to uphold something in are medium as "higher" then just some picture on a bubblegum rapper. I know that many would believe the exact opposite of this, but to me, these are two games that I would personally pick of examples of where the medium needs to go. Once again, I understand others would heavily disagree, but this is just personally how I feel.

Edit : If Orange Box counts, add HL2, Ep1, and Ep2 as well. I'm not sure where people stand on where HL is generationally, but these hold up to just about everything in my eyes.
