Dragon quest 8
Baten kaitos
Final fantasy 12
Valkyrie profile 2
Xenosaga 3
Kingdom hearts 2
Knights of the old republic
Tales of symphonia
Dark cloud 2
Digital devil saga 1-2
Nocturne
Shadow hearts 2

Am I right? or am I missing a lot of rpgs? (still waiting for tales of the abyss, rogue galaxy and devil summoner)

Final Fantasy X
Xenosaga
Star Ocean 3 (gets a lot of hate on nGAF but i love it)
and if you have Kingdom Hearts 2 in there you should add Kingdom Hearts too which i think is quite a bit better

Shadow Hearts 1-3

*Edit: Nevermind, added ^ and what's wrong with FFX?

I didn't like the first, and didn't even try from the new world out, but I heard it's very different from covenant.

Star Wars: KOTOR. Good God I still remember the intro to that game and taking my first step after getting off the ship into the city. Shivers down my spine. Not to mention the plot twist. The atmoshpere in that game was out of this world. Plus the freaking Jedi battles.

And it looks like Mass Effect is going to continue that atmosphere. Western RPG's for the win.

But I still want my KOTOR3. Jedi weapons FTW:)

* Presumptive greatness.

I'm probably gonna be in the smallest minority here but I'd have to say Fable. Even with all the broken promises and unfulfilled hype, this game still oozed with atmosphere. Playing through it just felt different than all of the other rpgs. I've got high hopes for Fable 2 (Don't take it for granted again Peter)

On a sidenote, I've really lost touch with JRPGs (last one I finished was FF7). I think it's the slow turnbased battles that turn me off. Hopefully this changes with the new generation of consoles, since some of my fondest memories were of playing oldschool FF, Phantasy Star, Chrono, etc.

On consoles...

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter (Capcom)
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King (Square Enix/Armor Project/Level 5)
Final Fantasy XII (Square Enix)
Fire Emblem: Path of Radiance (Nintendo/Intelligent Systems)
Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door (Nintendo/Intelligent Systems)

...that's it sadly. This gen blows for RPGs compared to last gen imo. :/

Not many. I went from huge RPG fanboi in the 16 and 32-bit days, to being overwhelmingly disapointed by just about every major JRPG this generation.

My vote goes to KOTOR: the game came out of left-field and turned out to be one of my favorite RPGs of all-time.

That's because it was an action/adventure game with an above-average number of NPCs.

I didn't know there was a fifth suikoden out, but I've lost interest in suikoden after 3...

And I need to play dragon quarter, because I've never liked breath of fire, never. from the first to the fourth I've hated them all because of the rpg clichés.

Do you guys believe my first RPG was KOTOR? I shuned the genre completely because I thought role playing sounded really boring....where's the action? How wrong I was, what an awesome way to step into the genre. That game made me interested in and love the Star Wars universe to begin with.

There's nothing cliched in Dragon Quarter.

For me (pre oct. 31):
1) KOTOR
2) Dragon Quest VIII
3) Mario: TTYD

Doesn't matter though cause there can only be 1: FFXII (collector's edition!)

Skies of Arcadia not found. Wild ARMs 3 not found. Back to the drawing board.

EDIT: And furthermore, Paper Mario 2.

No, sir. Just no. I'm actually fan of the series (yeah, I know) but Wild Arms 3 is pretty average compared to...well just about every other RPG that was listed. I think the only reason I enjoy the series is the Western setting, thats pretty fresh for a JRPG, but otherwise meh. EDIT: But I did like the theme song, if that helps. :)

The correct answers for great / amazing / AAA / top of the line RPGS will be

and

Level 5 knows how to do it big.

Yeah can't wait for white dragon knight:) (maybe rogue galaxy also, but I've heard some negative responses about it, so we'll see), level 5 is not that perfect, they made also the first dark cloud.

Nocturne
DDS1-2
Valkyrie Profile: Silmeria (so far)
DQ8
BOF:DQ
Shadow Hearts Trilogy
FFX
Romancing SaGa

I'm assuming FFXII will be up there too when I play it.

If you count SRPGs, Fire Emblem and some of N1's titles(DIsgaea 1-2, PB, MK)

Skies of Arcadia
KOTOR
Dark Cloud 2

I really liked Oblivion but something prevents me from calling it a 'great RPG'.

Haven't played FFXII yet.

- Final Fantasy 10
- Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
- Digital Devil Saga 1-2
- Shadow Hearts
- Shadow Hearts: FTNW
- Disgaea: Hour of Darkness

And, of course, Shadow Hearts: Covenant, which is by far the best RPG I've played this generation so far.

If I'm being discriminating here:

Breath of Fire: Dragon Quarter
Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne
Final Fantasy XII
Dark Cloud 2
Knights of the Old Republic
Shadow Hearts: Covenant
Disgaea
Skies of Arcadia

Georama in the original was cool. Having your life constantly drain if you didn't drink water was not.

The original Dark Cloud just had some really odd gameplay mechanics that sucked all the fun out of it. The water is a good example, also losing your weapon forever if the WHP ran out is another. The latter especially, you have to put a lot of time into your weapons in the Dark Cloud series. Not paying to your WHP for a second in the heat a battle could cost you big time.

Luckily all those things were fixed in Dark Cloud 2. Plus we got SPHEDA!
