So who here on Neogaf hunts and/or fish?

I'm working on getting my Hunter-Trapper Education requirment done, but being in Eastern PA the courses aren't held the frequency as they are in Central and Western PA (which is often 2 to 4 hours away), and can be 2 or 4 days long (as a a one day would be fine). PA is just filled with such natural beauty and splendor, so their are so many places to hunt. I also feel helping to keep the deer population in healthy and sustainable numbers (and not a new one on the side of the road each day) is good act of citizenship/conservation.

I still haven't got a bolt action rifle (you can't hunt with a semi, which is fine, in PA) or any equipment yet, I'm just reading the training materials (you can also study and take the test in a really short class, this option might be best for my schedule). http://www.hunter-ed.com/pa/ Truthfully with the upcoming birth of my daughter in the next week, it's going to be a slow process to get things setup for hunting, which is fine :), since the seasons for 2010-2011 is almost over, so I have maximum type to prep.

So does anyone else hunt or fish here on Neogaf? I was also wondering if people have recs on a good basic entry level hunting rifle? Perhaps one that comes with a scope.

TIA

I do a bit of fishing and love it. Picking up a new kayak next weekend which will allow me to explore some new areas.

Used to fish when I was younger with my dad and bro, but then shit just got busy and we moved so it's been awhile since I've been out on a boat.

Haven't been hunting besides maybe a couple times, but I was too young for a gun. Maybe when I get stuff in order I'll try it out.

I fish some at our family lake house. I suck at it though, and everyone else always catches stuff but me! Grrrrr.....

I got one of those short sleeve fishing shirts for Xmas though!

I do both, haven't gone fishing for a year or so though. I'm planning to save up and dig myself a pond. I'd avoid a rifle/scope combo if I were you.. the scope is usually shit. If you're only hunting deer a 243 would be more than enough.

Does hunting people count?

No.

I used to hunt.

Illinois does not allow rifle hunting. Well, they do, but its not hunting. It's baggin pen raised deer, in a damn pen with bait. That is not hunting.

My brother loves fishing and I don't, I always felt kind of bad because that's one of the activity we could do together, it's just so boring for me, I also feel bad for the fishes, so I don't bother putting any effort into it and I'd be sitting near the water the entire day and reeling in nothing.

I fish. Been invited on a number of hunting trips, but haven been out yet. Wanted to buy my own equipment for the bow hunting trip, so never made it.

I hunt and fish. I lived in Wyoming for quite some time so I would hunt for deer and occasionally elk. I would also go to North Dakota to fish for walleye and hunt pheasants. Personally, I like pheasant hunting the most, simply because it is fast and active and they are relatively easy to clean. As far as rifles it depends on what you are planning to go after of course. For deer I have a basic .270, for elk I have a .300, and for pheasants a basic 870 express.

I like to fish and canoe. I haven't really been fishing much since my father passed away, but I still take the canoe out as often as I can trick people into coming with me since it's easier in some ways than the boat as well as exercise. I really need to purchase a nice fishing kayak, I live in a fisherman's paradise. Surrounded by all sorts of fresh water with quick access to the Gulf of Mexico. I rather prefer fresh water fishing my self - not as much into that salty air and hot as hell sun. I enjoy the cool breeze as it runs down the river between the banks as well as the beautiful nature. Especially the natural spring rivers around here, the banks are so amazing.

while i enjoy fishing, i've never been hunting. not sure if i could hang. i do love me some archery and messing about on the range with some clay pigeons though

I used to bow and rifle hunt here in Michigan, but I don't get the chance to anymore. Fishing though I do as much as possible. Waiting for the lakes to freeze up now to do some ice fishing. Its nice, where I live there is a lake 7 miles in almost any directions. Always options to fish.

Grew up fishing. We go deep sea fishing whenever all our schedules align correctly.

Not sure how I make the distinction between killing fish and animals but I could never kill an animal unless I needed to survive off it. I just can't be that cruel.

I also don't like fish, so I end up giving my catch to someone else. I just like the thrill of the catch.

Fish occasionally with friends. I'm not big on it, because I actually don't like the taste of fish, and usually end up giving what I catch to someone else. However, I went on a deep sea fishing trip with a friend over the summer, and that was something else. Lots of different kinds of fish to catch. They bite faster than freshwater fish, and stay on. Also, they were delicious.

Acquired a hunters license in my teens but I don't practice it anymore.
I did hunt and fish in my teens and growing up. Only 'action' I've been getting in my mature years is a few months helping my brother out on his fishing boat but that's work (and net fishing).

Thanks, I appreciate the advice. For the moment I'm only thinking of deer, though elk does interest me. I would be very interested in some small game hunting. I have an NEF H&R Pardner Pump Protector, which is a Norinco/Hawk Remmy clone. Only problem is the barrel is 18.5 and unlike everything else on the gun you can't swap barrels with a Remington barrel. I am interested in bear...but only after developing sufficient skills.

I'll also avoid the scope, especially if it will knock the price down. I was reading this months Field and Stream and their are a lot of budget scopes that actually work quite well.

As a note to anyone, Even though they have their own iPad Apps, you can now get Field and Stream and Outdoor Life on the Kindle for iPad, which means the free 14 days subscription...which means one free issue of each.

Any thoughts on just getting a cheap Nagant? I only had the M38 before, which isn't as good for hunting as the other one...it is fun to shoot off at an indoor range as people think you have an elephant gun. lol

I used to do a lot of freshwater fishing but now the only time I go fishing is when I can get out to the coast with a boat. Goin' after dat salmon. I'd fish more around here but I don't have a vehicle and I don't trust the main river near where I live so It basically constitutes going out of town to hit up some of the nearby lakes and streams.

So I fish maybe once or twice a year.

When I visit my friend in Wilmington, NC we usually get a deep sea charter to go catch some King Mackeral. Probably one of my favorite things to do. We fillet them and take them over to this restaurant right by the pier and they cook it up however you like.

Goddamn I need to visit soon.

I fish, but only a few times a year. Either off the Coronado's (Mexico/San Diego) or I take my fresh water poles with me when I'm on the Colorado river in AZ or camping with my friends at Yosemite or local Indian reservation campgrounds w/lakes.

Nothing fancy here, just gear that gets the job done a cooler of beer and good friends.

I love fishing. I used to fish all the time when I was younger, but now I haven't gone in a few years. My fishing rod is just the cheapest one I could find at Bass Pro Shop.

I like to fish, but unfortunately I hate most fish and seafood (as does my dad and sister). I remember going deep sea fishing once, my mom had fish in the freezer for a whole month or two to eat.
