As long as we're talking about pet peeves, people who use "um" in written text. Um is part of speech disfluency. If you want to convey a pause in written text, there are better ways.

Yeah I can't stand it. It's even worse when people do it in real life. It has crept into my worklife as well...a few years ago, people at my job started to do this, and now it seems like almost everyone there does it.

I imagine all of us have fallen prey to these kinds of trends at one time or another, so I try not to judge too harshly.

Self-awareness is never a bad thing however and I think pointing out the absurdity of it is good.

Trying to whittle down a sentence to its core should be the goal of any poster.

So.....

It's not an instant thing. It's a subtle creep you notice over time. Sure, not every thread starts with "So", "Welp", etc. but you'll notice a lot of posts on GAF do as well.
