So why do people hate on Suda 51?

I'm asking this because ever since I bought Lollipop Chainsaw, I've gotten a lot of shit from people about buying this "garbage" of a game. I enjoy it very much. I've been playing Suda's games ever since Killer 7. I thought the art style and direction of that game was very unique and I had not played anything like it before. Then No More Heroes came out, and while it was still niche, it had the same effect on me that Killer 7 had. Sure it was mainly about playing filler minigames(some were fun) to fight bosses, but I felt like it was different from any action game I played before. Also the concept of playing as an otaku's dream come true of becoming a master assassin was really cool.

Lollipop Chainsaw, I think, is an awesome game(and yes I know it's for an acquired taste), and I just bought Shadows of the Damned today. Most of my friends seem to hate the guy for releasing these games. I find that Suda's games are for the serious niche market. Either you love it or you hate it. But I don't understand the constant hate this guy receives. Sure he's a little crazy, all of his games are explosive in gore, violence, sexual content, adult themes, underlying undertones on political government and rule, and of course, serious vulgar language, but these are games for adults, not little kids. If this is what people want, no I'm sorry, "grown-ups", and this man delivers on all fronts, why does he get so much hate?

I will continue to support him as I find his games enjoyable, different, and just downright random and fun to play. Grasshopper Manufacture is a great studio, I love all of their punk rock references, and usually when I play their games, I know I'm in one hell of a ride.

His titles include very neat and interesting ideas that are seriously hindered by low production values and bad design choices that instead of helping the player ease him/herself into the experience end up impeding immediate enjoyment of his games' mechanics.

Right. I get this valid point, and I can appreciate his ideas. But I've learn to accept "bad production values" because it's just a game. I don't really care as long as the game is fun.

Well according to Cheapy D from his friends that used to work at Grasshopper, Suda was just the face for the game and other people did the work.

People hate on Suda51?

Sorry, can't join that party. I can't hate the guy who made Killer7 and No More Heroes.

What hate? He just maintains a low profile.

I don't like his games though, but appreciate the fact that he tries something different.

they do? actually hate him and not just the games?

his best games though always seem to have somebody else involved (shinji mikami duh)

and all the other staff of course!

Everyone has their own opinion. His games aren't perfect but they are some of the most memorable games that I've played. I can't wait for Killer Is Dead.

Why would anyone hate Goichi Suda's games? They are eccentric and awesome for those who invest in it. You pretty much have an idea that his games are not for everyone, so you should not feel taken.

Loved Killer 7. Loved much of No More Heroes. Liked Shadows of the Damned.

I honestly can't imagine how people can't love his work unconditionally after Sdatcher and Killer 7. Truly inspired products, both of them.

Especially Killer 7. GOD DAMN that game is brilliant.

Suda Goichi is irrationally loved, and that always brings in people who irrationally hate, especially on the internet.

Honestly, I think Suda's games are pretty great. They are quirky in a way that alleviates them over boring, yet mechanically more competent, games. I just wish Suda would make another game as weird as Killer 7 with better mechanics, but with each passing game, I think that Killer 7 was a game created through special circumstances, and won't ever be replicated.

The "musical" parts of the No More Heroes games are pretty close though, imo.

Sophomoric mall punk garbage with bad design. Or just bad, banal art school crap attempting to excuse bad game design.

One friend said this:

Nope, not picking up Lollipop Chainsaw. Read too many reviews on how bland it is, the crappy controls, etc. Saving up for something else. Not sure what that will be.

He only said this because it popped up on his FB feed from my Raptr account saying I was playing it. He didn't even give a reason why he didn't want to play it. He just said that reviewers said Suda's games were garbage and budget bin games.

Other friend today said that "Maybe if LC hits like $10 I'll get it. Don't tell me you paid more than that for it." Yet he plays Call of Duty and buys it every year...

I feel the same way. No other Suda game has really hit me the way Killer 7 did. He hasn't made anything nearly as dark since then, and it's really too bad. That game is fucking AWESOME.

That said, Shadows of the Damned was close. I really like that game too. Also, the main menu is BADASS.

Haven't got around to buying Killer 7, but I loved NMH 1&2.

DUDE. Play it. It's worth at least experiencing.

I highly recommend Snatcher fans check out Sdatcher. The story is pretty awesome, there's more Gibson!

Well, you see, his games are fucking weird.

Do people not like weird? I don't understand.

1) They assume he's pretentious because he calls himself Suda 51, because he considers games to be art, and because his games are always strange

2) His games are never as polished as "AAA" games, which is all they want to play, and so it angers them that he finds any degree of success and/or popularity. Everyone must agree with their opinions because shut up, you're wrong.

3) He's become famous/successful enough to reach the point where people call him a sellout and talk about how he used to make great games before he started making mass market trash

4) Other people hate the people who say things like point 3) because it makes you sound like a hipster wannabe, so they associate their annoyance with said people with Suda and "his" games

I <3 Suda 51

Man... remedy this, please. Get the GameCube version.

Posting bros *fist bump*

I like his games so I'm no hater.
There is a lot he could improve but he is far from bad.

All style no substance. He couldn’t produce a game with good gameplay to save his life.
No More Heroes included some very... interesting commentary about otaku/video game culture. That game was incredibly clunky, but I can appreciate what he tried to do with the characters in that narrative.

I think the problem here is that he tries to push the "video games as art" tag so in the forefront that he forgets to make the "game" part accessible.

I guess I like weird games then.

But then I wouldn't call them weird, more like "abstract"

I wouldn't even call them abstract. I would call them "Not the same old shit."

Yeah CheapyD says he's an asshole. That he doesn't really do anything at work except show up and gives people soap from hotels as gifts. All I know is that his name is attached to a few games I really like so he's OK in my book.

You have friends with shitty taste, that's all.

Yeah, this. Guy makes (or at least these days vaguely oversees) games he actually wants to make, not games a publisher says he's allowed to. Even if half the time they're shit/batshit insane, you gotta appreciate that.
