So why isn't Valkyrie Profile up on PSN?

Is it stuck in legal limbo with rights or something?

We got Suikoden 2,BoF3,Tomba 1 and 2. Surely whatever is holding up this game can be resolved right? Didn't also get a PSP remake? Seems like it'd be great to play on Vita.

I never got to play it and it seems amazing.

This game is the only reason I still have a PSP sitting around. Easily one of my favorite RPGs. Hopefully we'll get it for PSN, as well as it's under-appreciated PS2 sequel.

The silence that falled on the series is the biggest waste of PS1-PS2 era IP, imo.

The first one was fantastic, the second one was amazing. The spin-off was kinda so-so, but first two were really great.

I hope they get it on there, one of the games I've always wanted to try out. Same with Bof3, Suikoden and some of the megaman legends games that never showed up until somewhat recently.

SE has been really, really bad about the Enix side of classic releases... Period, really. For such a prolific 8-bit/16-bit/32-bit publisher there's very little of their stuff on VC/PSN.

I heard a lot of great things about Valkyrie Profile, but I've never played the game and would easily spend money to play it on my Vita. Fuck paying 100+ bucks for a game that I may/may not like vs. parting with 5-10 bucks to experience it.

Though I'd like to know the status of a couple of other games too: what about Brave Fencer Musashi? Mega Man Legends 2 (maybe some Capcom guys here if they're around can comment?)? Einhander?

Can someone explain me why they never made Valkyrie Profile 3 for PS3 or PS4/Xbox One,

Is it because the franchise is niche or that era of Jrpg isnt interesting anymore?

SE was fucked up during the PS3 gen but there's still a chance they make VP3 for PS4. But first SO5 has yet to release.

Considering what Lightning Returns was, and the existence of Exist Archive, I'd say Tri-Ace WANTS to make it, but Square Enix isn't interested.

I paid 150 bucks for my copy, and it was worth every cent. Easily one of the greatest RPGs of all time.

More people deserve the chance to experience it.

I'm pretty desperate to try VP and SO SE from the PSP. I know I could track down a physical PSP copy but I'd much rather SE just release then digitally and I'd buy them day one

The recent JPN release of Star Ocean 2 for Vita and PS4 makes me somewhat hopeful that SE will do the same to Valkyrie Profile.

If not:

I can kind of understand them not releasing the PS1 version on PSN out of neglect/indifference, but it's pretty nuts that they never put the PSP version up for DL when that system was still alive and kicking. Didn't they also neglect to release Star Ocean 1 and 2 PSP digitally? You'd think they'd have jumped at the chance to put anything up that rights weren't standing in the way of.

(Also, whar's Einhander?)

I don't even know. Like, they greenlit a sequel to Drakengard and NieR yet they won't re-release VP1, VP2 or fund a VP3.

I don't understand.

I don't understand.

Maybe some dumb voice actor contracts? Otherwise I blame Japanese business bureaucracy.

Square Enix is one of those companies that didn't really bother going back and releasing the majority of their earlier PSP titles when PSN transitioned to offering most retail titles. I don't think they even bothered to put Crisis Core up.

The Star Ocean games were released here well after digital releases of retail PSP games had become customary, though.

(Also, I'm seeing Second Story recently got native PS3, PS4, and Vita ports in JP? Is there any hope for those coming westward?)

Square Enix greenlit Drakengard 3 and NieR Automata because there are Yoko Taro fans among their upper brass. Do the people who worked on Valkyrie Profile 1 and 2 even work there any more? If they've moved on, then that explain the lack of a sequel. VP1 and 2 not being on PSN is a bigger question mark, but I imagine that it's only a matter of time.

tri-ace did manage to get Square Enix to approve of using Valkyrie Profile cameos and soundtracks in Exist Archive and Star Ocean 5, respectively.

Maybe after Star Ocean 5 is out and out of the way, in a sense, Valkyrie Profile will be the next IP they revive and then decide to bring them to PSN? Here's hoping.

My own guess is that Exist Archive was originally VP3 that tri-ace pitched to Square Enix, but got turned down. Instead they re-tooled it into Exist Archive with new setting, characters, but the same game systems and themes (and atrocious character design).

There was talk from the Drakengard 3 producer of Square noting the growing interest in VP, so I'd give it until the end of this gen before we give up on there being another one, what with Square doing some crazy things this gen to get the fans back on their side again. Exist Archive does have similarities, for sure though. I just hope if they do decide to do VP3, that they get Suguro (director of VP2 and Resonance of Fate) back for VP3, that guy has been missing for a long time now. And get they get the series artists back too - Kou Yoshinari and You Yoshinari, both of whom are amazing and such a step above the artist for Exist Archive (who is pretty good but no match for them, imo).

That would be a dream come true. The VP cameos and bonuses in Exist Archive and Star Ocean 5 shows that they at least haven't forgotten about VP.

The PS2 had some awesome games towards the end of its cycle. You had FF12, Valkyrie Profile 2, Persona 3-4, God of War 2, and so forth.

I owned a copy of Valkyrie Profile back in the day. I sold it for more games after playing it, which is stupid considering how much it's going for. I ended up buying VP2 at launch and now I want both back in my possession and Sony should know that.

VP on the DS just isn't the same. I bought it, but it's not like Lenneth or Silmeria. I did rebuy the PSP version of Lenneth, just so I have it.

It's a shame those games aren't on there. Rogue Galaxy made it to PS4, which is another great title that came to PS2 later on. VP2 still has a lot of quality to it. You can notice the decline we had and the rise of western games if you go back. The DS was sorta the place for Square games last gen. PSN needs FFXII and VP.

If you still have a PSP and live in the states, Amazon has the game new for $24. It's the only way I was able to play the game, having missed the original release.

The game seems to have a weird screen ratio issue on PSP, fyi. I believe the image is stretched from 4:3.

Square Enix's online store also has the PSP game new, though it's $29.99.

Agreed, I'd buy Valkyrie Profile and Lunar 2 in a heartbeat. I always thought that Lunar 2 was better than the first one. I would love to be able to play both on my Vita.

What? No love for Valkryie Profile 2? That late PS2 game has gorgeous graphics and is 16:9 ready out of the box. Put that game up on PSN and I'll buy it day one!
VP1 should be up too

Talked about this last night with some friends.

I love Valkyrie Profile. Would love to play on Vita.

Also VP2 even on PS Now would make me sign up for a month.

The real question is why the fuck don't we have Valkyrie Profile 3: Hrist yet?

Let's all pray Matsuda approves it one day.

Sometimes, yes. And it really shows in rooms and vertical shafts where the horizontal doesn't go past the 4:3 limit and as such the screen appears blurry and zoomed in, but most dungeons and towns are comprised of long horizontal corridors and these fare much better, being able to fit into the PSP's native resolution. Battles too were mainly unaffected by the resolution switch besides gaining more viewable real estate via widescreen.

Seems likely to be a license issue of some sort. Square has a load of missing digital titles that seem to point to perhaps music rights issues where they don't want to pay for the new format like Crisis Core and Kingdom Hearts.
