SOCOM 4 Bomb Squad Revealed, Beta Release Details

http://blog.us.playstation.com/2011/03/04/socom-4-bomb-squad-revealed-beta-release-details/

Competitive multiplayer has always been the core of the SOCOM franchise, and SOCOM 4: U.S. Navy SEALs takes it further than ever before with modes and options that both new recruits and veterans alike will enjoy. We’ve previously covered three of our four competitive modes — Suppression, Last Defense and Uplink — and today we’re excited to unveil our fourth mode, Bomb Squad.

In Bomb Squad, Insurgents have planted a number of bombs around the map and the Spec Ops team must defuse them all before time runs out. What makes Bomb Squad special is that it features the unique Bomb Technician character, played by one member of the Spec Ops team, who is charged with defusing the explosives. He carries both an automatic shotgun and a mobile grenade launcher and is very heavily armored, making him a deadly force on his own; that said, the technician is still an open target any time he turns his back to defuse Insurgent bombs. Succeeding in Bomb Squad requires tactics, teamwork, patience and confidence to get the job done, all pillars of the overall SOCOM experience.

When can you get your hands on Bomb Squad, you ask? Well, you’ll be able to try out all four of our modes on two maps in our upcoming beta! The SOCOM 4 Multiplayer Beta will include each of the game’s competitive multiplayer modes — Suppression, Last Defense, Uplink and Bomb Squad — all playable on the maps “Port Authority” and “Assault & Battery”. And of course, you’ll be able to play each of our modes in either of their Standard or Classic variants.

The SOCOM 4 Multiplayer Beta will roll out in four separate phases. It’ll begin with a small, private group and then expand weekly from there until it’s freely available to everyone! Here’s the schedule for each of the beta’s rollout phases:

On March 15th, a private beta goes live. We’ll be contacting eligible players soon.
Beginning March 22nd, PlayStation Plus members will gain access to the beta.
On March 29th, anyone with a beta code included with Killzone 3 gains entry.
Starting April 5th, the beta will be freely downloadable to anyone via PlayStation Network.

The beta is scheduled to run until April 13th, at which point the servers will be taken down in preparation of SOCOM 4′s retail release on April 19th!

Booyah. So, everybody will get the beta eventually. Smart.

Bomb Squad sounds like "Hurt Locker" mode. Kinda neat.

Bomb Squad sounds brilliant, I expect no respawns though, fingers crossed.

Could well be my game of the year.

Open to general public a week after KZ3 is called being screwed.
PSN+ getting it a week before KZ3 owners is called being screwed.
Getting that ugly dog-tag logo in the boxart of KZ3 is called being screwed.
Game releasing 2 weeks after KZ3 owners get it, therefore ensuring that beta ends early for them is called being screwed.

All in all, it's good to be the PSN+ king.

Well, looks like it's time for me to get psplus: how much is that again?

$15 for 3 months. $50 for a year and 3 months.

I've got a key with KZ3, but I'd like to get another one to give my longtime MAG compatriot. How do you become "Eligible" for the earliest option?

Probably big members of the SOCOM community?

$17.99 for 3 months or $49.99 for 15 months.

With all the betas that are sure to hit Plus this year, I'd go with the 15-month plan. SOCOM 4, MotorStorm Apoc, inFamous 2, Resistance 3, Twisted Metal, Uncharted 3...and that's just the first-party stuff.

The only thing that sucks about PS+ is that Sony had to rip my genitals from my body in order for me to be a member. I didn't know they did that until I read about it on GAF though. They must have used some strong anesthesia.

Can't wait to try this out. I'm really looking forward to some tactical gameplay.

Bleh, betas are just glorified demos these days.

I don't understand why they have to stagger the release date for KZ3 owners. Why not just make it at the same time as PS+?

Kinda seems like they are worried/ still building the servers for server load.

I'll be bummed if I don't get into the first wave because I'm not a PS+ member and I'm not buying KZ3. I don't post on the terrible forums, but I've been playing since S1, and I still play Confrontation.

A community manager mentioned on the blog they're hand-picking people, and on the forums he posted that "We are going to do our best to involve as much of the community as possible. Beyond that we can't get into specifics yet as we're trying to work out the fine details on our end as well, so there's not much else that we can say for the moment."

The new mode sounds pretty interesting - like 'Arms Run' from Confrontation, but with the addition of the guy in the bomb suit. Still a shame there's no demolition mode, however.

Even if I got a code I'd have to wait until stage 3? FU

Edit: Honestly Greg, if you of all people don't get in on Stage one then I would consider the whole selection process broken.

Well, all modes can be played with or without re-spawns ("Standard" or "Classic" variants) so...

I'm assuming they'll look at post counts on the official forums like they did for their community day - even though most of the selected hadn't played SOCOM in a long time and just liked to talk a lot.

Pretty sure I have 0 posts, and by the quality of conversation over there I don't see that changing.

Damn shame. I never usually find my way to the official forums of a game, even if I play it all the time. Those places really are only for people who want to complain, the people that love the game just play it.

yeah, but I assume the re-spawn games won't be ranked nor count towards trophies (just like Confrontation)?

No, respawn is the standard game type this time around. They might track stats separately between the standard and classic modes, but both are going to be 'ranked'.

They haven't clarified yet if the classic mode is going to be weighted in terms of player progress (e.g., a kill in classic mode is worth more points than a standard mode kill), but I'm assuming it'll either be weighted or there will be separate trophies between modes.

I'm PS+ and I got the KZ3 beta code, I wonder if the PS+ thing will be another "first come first serve" deal like they did with the KZ3 beta. (boo if so) I guess I could trade my Socom code for a 24 hour double xp code for KZ3.

Hrmm... so my code from KZ3... don't really need it since I am PS+.

I'll gladly take that code from you.

I would also accept a Socom beta code from anyone else. :)

I really want to give this game a shot. Could be really fun. Hopefully they don't fuck up MP like KZ3 did. Yes even I am started to get sick of all the problems in it.

Have you played much SOCOM? I thought communities like KZ and COD were insane about balancing and issues and changes but SOCOM people are about as hardcore as it gets.

SOCOM is about tactical combat not graphics but damn that looks ugly sometimes.
I don't know who takes their PR screenshots but whoever is responsible isn't very good at making their baby look pretty.. even the first trailer looked bad. But the offscreen gameplay I've watched looked good. Here's hoping its a locked 30fps, after KZ3's framerate issues I'd take framerate over looks.

Yes I have played Socom before. KZ3 problems are a combination of bugs, balancing and a useless community which sucks at doing anything else besides killing people.
