SOCOM 4 Bomb Squad Revealed, Beta Release Details

I think you can automatically dismiss anyone who says it feels like CoD anymore to a point as flat out butthurt SOCOM fans, or BC fans trying to insult the game, because honestly it is the furthest thing possible from CoD. I was playing with some BC fans saying it's boring because there's no vehicles, then they said it was hard to aim, then they later concluded it plays like CoD. Then I read on forums with some of the supposed SOCOM hardcore saying it's like CoD now (all they did was play in respawn btw lol). The game is absolutely the furthest thing away from that game design and feel. If someone draws similarity to BC, then sure, "maybe", but the game is free-standing once again as a SOCOM. Which SOCOM was a slower paced tactical shooter before BC came out, if anything, they drew some feel from SOCOM .

So anyways, the only complaint I really have thus far is the lack of lobbies, and/or more time in the matchmaking lobby screen. Matchmaking is incredible though, as it's near instantaneous and probably the fastest game in this regard on consoles. Lag is mainly non-existent, as I've only seen it happen once for a short period of time. It's Zipper though, and they're usually really solid in this regard anyways.

The sound is really impressive thus far in the game.

Man what's up with the Move controls in Socom? It auto moves up and down depending on what the terrain is like.

So say I'm going down some stairs it auto looks down. Thing is it forces you to look at the floor basically until you get off the stairs or you fight with it by pushing way up with Move.

Let me control the vertical movement dammit!

There are basically no settings in this beta for Socom bar calibration. Spoiled by the Killzone 3 Move settings I guess.

:(

Played a bit of the "Run'n'Gun" game mode, I guess thats just what they call custom games or something? It was Last Defense with limited weapon choices (SMGs and shotguns), tons of fun, this game mode is just fantastic. Custom games in general will be awesome.

Hard to hate on a game that works this well but I'm still a little saddened that it doesn't quite feel like Socom. I guess I'm looking for a more nostalgic feeling. Hopefully they'll bring back some classic maps, though, that would be awesome.

On March 15th, a private beta goes live. We’ll be contacting eligible players soon.
Beginning March 22nd, PlayStation Plus members will gain access to the beta.
On March 29th, anyone with a beta code included with Killzone 3 gains entry.
Starting April 5th, the beta will be freely downloadable to anyone via PlayStation Network.

This first phase was only for select people, but Tuesday begins the PS+ phase and KZ3 players are let in the week after.

Looks like EU will have to wait for Wednesday if they have PS+ to get their codes? All the give out codes are US only and will only work if we make US accounts. I hope we get to play against US players or there will probably be very few players until the open beta.

This. Move implementation in this beta is not good, I would go as far to say that it is bad.

Holy shit ps+ only offers SC4 beta when you sign up? WTF. Thats such a rip off! Can't believe Sony have such a shit service.

It should be free like in giveaways and such and should be the only way to get it. Damn crooks charging you for a damn demo.

It doesn't feel like S2 exactly, but like I said, I think it evolved a bit... for the better in more ways than not. It's still SOCOM though, you can tell that through and through.

I started up a NeoGAF clan btw, if people want in to join games easier, lemme know on here. Or via my PSN name if you're already on my friends list.

Do you know if us EU players will get to play with you US guys in the beta? If so, I'll message you on the 23rd when we get it.

Yes that's a 'Custom Ranked' gametype.

If you're familiar with how Halo does it, it'll work the same sort of way for SOCOM 4. Zipper has the ability to create Custom Ranked playlists which is sort of the 3rd pillar along with 'Standard' and 'Classic'. For example Zipper can actually track what people enjoy playing in custom games, and make a Ranked playlist based on that. And they've said they will have other ways to submit suggestions for Custom Ranked games as well.

One of the first Custom Ranked gametypes will be 'Community Day Classic' where the lucky 18 community members flown to Zipper (including myself) all voted on a variety of different settings to come up with that gametype. I believe it'll be live tomorrow. It's basically as close to SOCOM 1/2 as you can get with this game.

I think this is shareable because if they are really going to release this to everyone come April 5th i doubt they have a separate version for people in the beta now with a 24hr lock and when it releases to everyone on psn without a lock. I mean why would they lock a beta that's free for everyone to download right?

Yeah. That's terrible indeed. Particularly the auto-leveling when you are walking on level ground. It's a pain in the ass during vertical confrontations (like from top of roof towards enemy right below you) since camera constantly attempts to recenter as you strafe and YOU DON'T WANT THAT!

Also, having the camera automatically tilt upwards while walking up the stairs makes it painful to peak when you get to the top. You have to move the camera down again before sticking your head out.

The only current solution to this is to go in zoom mode. That mode is unaffected by this "camera assist" system.

Memo to devs: don't touch my camera!

Hopefully the have an option to turn this off (better if they remove it altogether tho)

There are other issues as well, all related to camera control/behaviour, and all fixable.
It's still perfectly playable once you understand how it works and adjust to it, but ideally you shouldn't really have to adjust to anything to begin with.

Not sure, but you can give it a shot!

Sent out the invites to you two that requested it. Post here if you want to jump aboard. I found Warrior and jumped in a game with him with ease via this method, works great.

Only thing is also this: I don't like being the bomb tech, it's not my playstyle to say the least. I think if you're loaded out as a sniper, you shouldn't be selected to be a explosives expert, or maybe uncheck a box to decline. If everyone on your team declines, then randomly select it. Have it active as default to be it, and you have to go in to change it I think. I snipe, thus I do not run into the mix. :P

Any media on the Bomb Tech? I want to see it in action. Heard is like a Big Daddy from bioshock where he rams you and can chuck granades like the ones in Mario games, you know those round balls with faces. Lol

From what I've played he's just a regular character, with a little bit of extra armor, and he moves slower. Uses a USA-12 and a grenade launcher.

Edit: The 'join a friend' option is really nice. Shows the map they're playing, the game type, many players are in, and if there are any restrictions.

Edit2: Looks like the clan options are gonna be nice too. You can see a whole list of clans ready to be challenged, should be very easy to have clan games.

I'm really liking what I'm seeing and hearing about this game. Hopefully Zipper will stay with us and patch in the more easy fixes people want to make it even better.

Someone should test it out. Also, see if the game is tied to an account. Select the game on the XMB and hit triangle -> info and see if it says anything about account owner.

Just played some more bomb squad classic. Man this game is amazing. Different from the socom of the old but still so good.

I don't like the MAG headshot sound effect that they use though. A ping would be better than that mush sound.

Finally a shooter that the community likes. I was so very disappointed in Killzone 3! Hopefully we won't have to wait too long for Starhawk.

The beta is confirmed shareable, and the game information doesn't list an account owner, which leads me to believe this beta can be shared infinitely like a game demo.

Game sharing = piracy confirmed

Looks like we can finally debunk that Tretton quote!

I shared anyway. If they wanna lock me out that's their choice. I'm already sold on the game, and my friends weren't until they got to play it too with me so I just helped them make over $200.00 come April.

Yo J-Rzez, I've FINALLY almost finished the in-game download after starting right when I recieved my code back at 1:30pm, lol...

May I have a clan invite? PSN ID: Polyhedron

Hey guys, I was done around 8pm tonight, so those of you I didn't get to invite I'll add you all tomorrow when I log on mid-afternoon!

Those that are not in the beta yet, and will be for the KZ3 beta, or when PSN+ is active, PM or post then to remind me.

The clan options are really nice. But this is Zipper, who had clan battle ladders with event scheduling back in the PS2 era, so it's expect from them. They're one of the few devs out there that realizes how important community features are, outside of lobbies :P .

SOCAST Episode 15. We are very critical about some things that we think should be tweaked but also really enjoy the game.

Thanks for this. Just finished listening to podcast and I agree with majority of the points made. However, it saddens me that you didn't like the 'strafing wars' though. It brought some of the best gun fights on the old socom games. Dodging bullets, wasting two or three clips on a single person. Those were furiously frustrating but at the same time epic. But not just that, it was great for manuverability and control too. It's one of those things like D-Pad leaning that made the old Socom games so unique and competitive.
