SOCOM 4 Bomb Squad Revealed, Beta Release Details

I really don't like,

1. the frame rate. there's no reason it shouldn't be locked at 30. I know it's a beta, but this is zipper, have they ever made a game that wasn't choppy as fuck? it makes aiming harder than it should be.

2. how inaccurate firing off the hip is. this was such a big part of socom, strafing and firing in short bursts to take guys down. now the bullets spray unless you're crouched and using the sights.

3. camera. the fuck? why is it so close? just moving around the map is a pain because i have to constantly compensate for the tiny FOV.

4. walking speed is so slow. I thought 'classic' mode was supposed to be quicker? i was hoping it would move like S2 and remove the sprint for classic mode.

5. menus and hud. just really ugly all around, a pain to navigate the menus with all the uneeded sub-menus

I don't think it's a bad game, it's just not what I wanted out of the series. Unless the final game has some serious improvements i'll be passing [or waiting for an amazon sale]
This is 100% spot on. All of it. Well done.

I'm sorry but some of it is just plain ole' bullshit.

I agree with all of it too. The menu and UI are so god damn ugly. The camera and FOV suck balls. I get anxiety running places in maps because I know I'll get killed by someone I missed to the side of me.

I find it nearly impossible to kill someone with a shotgun. Firing from the hip seems weird and flawed. Even when I adjust the sensitivity.
and is it me or did they not include controller layouts? Cant seem to find them. I really would like to learn the controls rather than spawning for the very first time in a Socom game then knifing my teammate due to my R3 zoom in-out toggle reflexes.

There's a vote to kick option? Fuck that noise. Left 4 Dead 2 was ruined for me by little fuck who would vote me out simply because I didn't have a mic on, or I couldn't revive their dumb asses because I was being overwhelmed by the horde.

Probably the stupidest option implemented into any multiplayer game today.

it may be those things for some....but dammit if the game an't fun as fuck with those *problems* so far...the fact that it can get even better with some fixes gets me even more excited.

MAG kept getting better ever since beta for me...but also the engine performance got better. Runs much better than the Beta and launch build.

I say it's a good idea in theory and has been a part of SOCOM since the beginning, but the morons who corrupted the idea are the ones that ruined it. A lot of games have people get autokicked for teamkilling yet you're hopeless against the other 50 types of griefing out there so this was always seen as a way to moderate the game and keep it fun.

It's when clans started using it on a power trip just because they have numbers in the room is when it turned to shit. It wasn't bad at all early on in SOCOM's life, especially since any clan could create a room that was ranked. It got worse and worse as the series grew bit it was NEVER as bad as when S:C shipped with no custom ranked rooms. Rank did nothing yet everyone refused to make their own rooms meaning they would have to try and cram into a default ranked room, especially since Quick Match sucked. Once they had more clan members on and couldn't get them in the room, they'd immediately vote. The power trip got bigger and bigger until people were constantly voted for just about anything.

When the party system is working, we can hope it tames the voting but I doubt it anymore. At least clans will all be together in a party for the most part meaning less voting over that.

I just wouldn't say voting itself was a bad idea when it came to be. It's the elitist SOCOM community that ruined the whole idea just because they're psychotic...lol. Every single game the forum has gone mad about voting having to be in the game as a major part of the series. So it's more the harsh community than the idea since it started out quite peaceful and was very useful to get rid of glitchers and other griefers. Now that glitches aren't too hard to patch, it's not needed as much meaning it should at least get a major overhaul. They at least should have kept the "Disagree" option from S:C which would stop some of the unjust voting at least.

Just take a gander over at the SOCOM forums to see how batshit insane the place is. I've posted there a lot but I had to take a 3 month break from the place just to get away from the negativity. :D

Indeed. This has passed the BC2 beta as my most played beta of all time. It's definitely a good sign that SOCOM is back when you can play the same damn shit over and over again. :)

you should try Clan Challenge, solves the party system and the vote to kick problem

It is! Everybody is playing just for fun, just like the days of Socom 1&2... communicating, helping each other, voting noobs lol.

Socrack is BACK!

Awesome. Downloaded the beta this morning and it was like 500MB and I though that was strange, but assumed since it was only 2 maps, it made some sense. Decided to play a little before bed, now downloading 1.5GB of updates. Goodnight.

Wow, the community in SOCOM games really makes me laugh and shake my head. So many immature morons.

So I join a game of Classic Suppression. I just start the round, and within a minute or so I am 4-0 (pretty much carried the team on this round since everyone else pretty much rushed, got 1 kill, then died...yay). Slowly but surely my teammates die, and I'm the last guy left against 4 enemies.

So, naturally I'm going to be careful and not be an idiot. I walk around in the crouching position and I'm going throughout the map checking various buildings and what not (Port Authority). By all means I'm NOT camping or sitting in one place.

Apparently, this is not acceptable to the 13 year olds on my team, and suddenly "A vote to kick you is in progress" or whatever pops up. I'm like "wow...wtf..." ok whatever, some moron is just impatient.

10 seconds later... "You have been kicked from your team, press X to exit."

WOW They are such assholes they voted off the LAST GUY REMAINING on their team....fucking hell...they lost the round, but at least they get to play again right away! :/

And it wasn't even a clan - just a bunch of randoms who couldn't wait I guess...

woooahhh...I have not witnessed this first hand yet but this sounds complete bullshit. How can Zipper allow this in the middle of the game? This makes no sense. Has this been the case in the SOCOM series?

vote kick
While I'm going to believe you, I've been in the position where I've vote kicked our last remaining player because he was being a camping asshole. Fair enough if you were sweeping the map looking for the last guy, but there's nothing worse than watching as one of your team members sits in one place looking to chance his way to victory.

Finally get to give the beta a shot...hope I run into some people who try to work as a team.

EDIT: Hmm its another victim of the DTS effect? What do people have against firing from the hip these days?

Because unless you're shooting while snapped to cover, the hip fire can be totally unpredictable. Personally, I just run if someone starts shooting at me. I run and run and then snap to cover and wait. That is Socom's new reality.

There are two big annoyances I would want to see changed in the final product:

1. Let us choose our loadout BEFORE we enter a game lobby. Every other shooter game I've ever played allows you to setup your guns, equipment, outfit, etc... outside of a game. This gives me some time to THINK about what I want. I hate how I have like 0.3405980 seconds to quick pick a primary gun, attachments, secondary gun, attachments, equipment 1, equipment 2, and my character.

2. Make grenade launchers a separate attachment for guns. Why is it suddenly 'part of the gun' once you unlock it? This is so stupid. For example, I reached the top mod level for the IAR 556, my favorite assault rifle as a SEAL. It unlocked the grenade launcher, sweet! Oh, I'm in a lobby that doesn't allow ranged explosives. Oh shit, NOW I CAN'T USE THIS GUN AT ALL. Why? Because you can't remove the grenade launcher. I just spent all this time to unlocking new improvements for my rifle, and now I can't use it AT ALL.

Thats what I mean. It should be balanced, not just dts or nothing at all, when away from cover.

thanks blackmamba.

holy fuck 1.5GB update WTF I can't pause it or cancel it.

If you have to just quit out of the game. Next time you start it up it will resume at whatever % you left it at.

So, in between rounds I managed to read through the co-op details on the brief screen that shows up talking about the final product. The co-op really sounds pretty cool, especially if these "custom campaigns" are really as nice as they sound.

I may buy this game just for the single player and co-op experience alone. The sometimes-frustrating multiplayer will be a bonus. :P

Just looked at my total play time on the beta and I was surprised I got almost 20 hrs in already. I need to pace myself. And btw, anyone getting a clan together?

I think I've got shooting from the hip down now... I rarely use DTS unless it's a long shot. It definitely helps once you stick with a certain set of weapons, but I'd still like the system in place to be changed.

And I think cover should be removed from classic. Depending on how far the camera is pulled back it'll be easier to create natural standing cover, and the cover that requires you to be crouched (e.g. around the railing of the boat) will leave you partially exposed unless you go prone.

I got vote kicked after seeing my last teammate alive get shot, lining up my scope, and just waiting for him to pop out. I was at the very top of the jungle map center tower and could basically see a lot of the map with a scope. Not 10 seconds went by and I got vote kicked. This is the COD effect...and I fucking hate it. Impatient bastards.

don't judge from the multiplayer only, maybe the single player is good, I've seen a couple of videos for single player and it looked decent.

about the MP, I'm downloading the beta right now.

I played for a bit last night, but I was finding the sharpshooter a bit tough to use. Partly it's hard to jump into a MP game and flail around with the move controls when you're constantly being killed but KZ3 seemed to click with me quicker, maybe just the 3rd person makes it less intuitive. Not crazy about the L1 and L2 functionality, but damn although movement was iffy for me when you saw someone at a distance you can sure snipe them pretty damn well.

Actually, that's a pretty good summation for my (still fairly limited) experience using Move and specifically the sharpshooter with games - character movement seems a bit awkward but shooting is always easier and much more accurate. Maybe I'll just get a hang of moving and stop embarrassing myself trying to strafe up staircases like I want to, or maybe some dev will figure out an even better way to go about it.

Playing the beta just makes me keep wondering the same question...

Was SOCOM I and II pure luck? How did Zipper used to be so mind-blowingly awesome? Is it just the nostalgia effect?

Everything was so so perfect in S2. Weapon balance, run speed, accuracy, level design, intensity... Everything..

Then SOCOM 3 and CA. Urgh. Slant Six made S:C but you gotta think Zipper offered assistance with the creative guidance.. And they sure as hell aren't hesitating to borrow a lot of S:C's character models :P

Uhhh...Which character model is from S:C? All of them are new to me and surely there aren't "a lot" of borrowed ones. :/

They're closer to MAG than S:C but even then, they're still new.

I disagree. Zipper still has it. MAG was a lot of fun and the new Socom is great.

I played a few rounds a bit ago with the move. I've never played a socom game so I got my ass handed to me pretty quick. It seems like the move controls are decent im just having a heck of a time seeing enemies in all the foliage and stuff. My highlight is a 3 killstreak. I went 3-4 that round.

Im sure with more time ill feel competant. I just don't know what I should be doing mostly. I was using cover and walking around but everyone was getting the jump on me. Also the announcer needs to stop saying data. We got the data. The data is lost. The data is stolen. Someone get the data.

I'm new to the SOCOM universe and I'm not sure what all the buzz is about. I have friends that were nearly kicked out of college and others that almost lost their wives because of the first two SOCOM's. "You have to get SOCOM 4!!!"
This was supposed to be my shooter for the summer but the beta has been pretty underwhelming to me. Shooting feels kind of sloppy and inaccurate and character animations are wonky. I know "beta" but let's face it this is more of a demo so close to realease.
WTH is going to be my game of the summer now. =(

The first two SOCOM games were on a league of their own. Current gen SOCOM games do not even compare.
