I'm surprised they cut ties with Activision. They've been together for several years now.

Rage looks beautiful. It hardly seems possible that they can pull off that level of detail at 60 fps, and yet there it is.

Nope. They're actually not even really leading on PC anymore. All platforms use exact same source material and run at 60fps according to JC.
Really? Oh damn. It looks freaking amazing.

Carmack, you sick bastard.

Stop being 10 years ahead of your colleagues.

Edit:
Holy shit, even the art-style is outstanding this time. Can't wait for QuakeCon.

Ehhhh well. I don't care what you tell me. I don't believe those are ingame until I play on MY PS3, in MY house with MY own electricty! Holy shit if it is though :D.

Pretty much. I hate trailers that don't show any footage of actual gameplay.

It's too good to be true. Holy shit how has he pulled this off :lol

pretty sure he's a damn cylon or some other kind of nefarious cyborg. That video is insane to be running at 60fps on the console budget GPUs.

the huge texture approach and the rendering method being used here is a real revelation. It'll be interesting to see if there is a migration from UE to id Tech 5 in the next couple of years-I imagine it'll all come down to tooling usability.

Cautiously optimistic..I'll wait till I see gameplay.
And even then..we'll see if it can hang with the current crop of shooters, as a game (not just visuals).

Carmack is a beast though..I expect it to end up looking gorgeous either way.

holy shit. that can't be representative of the console versions, can it? CAN IT?

one of the features of the engine is that it runs the exact same no matter what platform you are on, so if you're running at 60fps in one place you're running 60fps everywhere with the same assets.

Or so id claims.

God damn...that close up at the end...freeze frame it...it looks fucking gross (in such a beautiful way). The detail on him is INSANE though.

Close, but not quite. What they said is that the actual game content each game is running is the same. ie: The same textures, models, etc. If you pump the right amount of polygons into a scene I'm sure you could get one of the systems to bog down a bit.

Part of the draw of the engine...from the developers standpoint, is that you get code for each version from a single compile.

Trailer was great. I can't wait to see the rest of the games and more of this one. idtech 5 is shaping up real nice.

:lol at prerendered. I mean we already saw gameplay in the debut trailer.

Holy shit, everyone bow down before John Carmack.

Any other developer and I'd say that was pre-rendered, but id knows their shit.

First UE3, Then the CryEngine.... now Tech5... these games are getting closer to acheiving visual parity with CG movies. If games continued to look like this and improve overtime... i can definitely agree with sony and say that longer console cycles are possible. games like this look so good now that no one will care if you can add an extra dimple on faces on future consoles.

Next gen will definitely be interesting... if graphics arent the biggest draw... you'd have to focus on bringing new features that will change or enhance current gameplay.

it's easy to pick out the people in this thread who've never played an id game before.
Seriously. I am fucking floored at how good this looks, but I am not surprised in the slightest. id's games have always been way ahead of the curve, and somehow managed to run really really well. I knew this would be no different.

I remember back in the day when I said John Carmack lacked the fortitude of being one of gaming development icons, however this teaser has peaked my interest.

Without it being CG, this has anything Epic has put together beat by at least 5-7 yrs. Easy. Unreal Engine 4 & 5 are going to have a hard time matching the level of detail shown in this teaser for quite some time.

My hope is that id makes the game engine easy to program for and we see this engine cross licensed to other PC franchises and console games alike. Their partner ship with EA I think will solidify that notion but time will tell.

Quakecon will be very interesting. Quake 5 on the new engine? New Doom? One can hope.
