Someone hit my car and left a note

Has this ever happened to anyone else? Leaving for work this morning I found my car with a gash on the left side and a note under the windshield wiper. "Sorry about that - I'm going to pay you. I wait for you 30 min.", along with a name and telephone number. I've called the number a few times throughout the day and left a couple messages. Seems legit. I get a voicemail with the dude saying his name but haven't heard back.

Should I talk to my insurance and let them know what happened, or give the guy more time to get back to me? I took a few pictures before I left for work but haven't filed a police report or anything.

Call your insurance and make a report. Do not wait for him to try and get his buddy to fix it for you.

Also, that is a fucking huge hit/gash. Where was it parked? Dude must have been flying.

On a one-way residential street outside my apartment, but I live right off of a main Boulevard with a lot of bars. People come flying through these alleyways sometimes.

Call and make a claim. There is no fixing that fender. It protects both of you, unless he wants to pay you cash, which is on you.

File the police report. Insurance companies like to have that. Trying to deal with only the driver is shady and things might not work out. It would be more trouble than going through insurance.

Yeah um that's a big hit. If it was just a gash/dent it would probably cost a little over a grand to fix and repaint the panel but they might have to just replace the whole panel in your case. Just text the guy that you had to call your insurance so they don't get upset about you taking too long and then let your insurance and his insurance figure it out.

Hopefully he has insurance.

What? The OP is unable to reach them and has left multiple messages.

contact your insurance and give them the dudes info. It's not going to look good if you wait a week and then contact them.

Had this exact thing happen to me. I was so pissed. They left a note, and I called the number but no answer. I ended up doing a lot of research, and found out it was a Crystal Springs company truck that scraped my car. Eventually the company representative called me and gave me a number to call. I had to deal with their internal insurance representative, and had to argue with them to give me a reasonable amount because my car was old. This part is never fun. Just keep your cool and do your research.

I would have called the police to have a report made anyway and given them the dudes phone number. Then I would have called my own insurance and reported the accident and the driver's info to at least get the ball rolling.

If its the dude's fault and you got a good feeling the number is real then thats what I suggest. If the info is bogus then I would replace the fender myself.

Why did you not call your insurance company right away?

I had someone leave me a note when they scraped my rear quarter panel at my apartment. At first I appreciated the sentiment, but became annoyed when they had me get multiple quotes. At that point they were costing me additional time and stress.

File a police report and call your insurance. You pay for insurance so they fix your shit and they deal with the guy or his insurance.

Police don't like to really come out for calls like this.

That was your mistake. Call your insurance, get it fixed through them, have them go after the people who did it. No arguing over if the amounts are high enough.

I did call my insurance. I only had liability. There is nothing here that was my mistake. I doubt they'd fix it either, since the car wasn't worth as much as it would cost to repair the damage. We're talking about a scrape along the entire left side of the vehicle, holes in the metal, side mirror ripped off. My insurance agent made no indication that they could do anything.

Also, piss off with that shit.

I feel so sorry for your insurance premium as it is going to go up, all because of that guy.

Here are the things you need to do -

1) Call the police so you can make a full report and give them the note. You need to have something documented and the police might be able to check any CCTV in the area. Request an investigation.

2) Keep contacting that guy. Just give it a few hours within that day (i'm sure a few hours gone by the time this post is done). Record everything that is said.

3) If you hear nothing from the guy then make the claim and link them to the police investigation. This would be wrapped quickly hopefully unless the guy denials everything.

Good luck. Either way, it sounds like you will be paying a higher insurance regardless unless the guy response and pay for everything. If he pays then get those quotes super fast and make sure the cheapest one is the one he pays for. Remember, the entire panel would need to be replaced unless the hit also damaged the steering, which will be costly.

Yeah always file a police report and go through your insurance - ALWAYS! There is really no need to haggle and make accommodations with someone who was so irresponsible they hit your car; especially doing this much damage.

Someone hit my truck just like that while it was parked a couple weeks ago except they ripped my side mirror off, too.
No note, just straight hit and run in the middle of the day. I have their passenger side mirror.
It cost me $70 and a trip to a junk yard to fix all of the damage perfectly.
Buying the parts new would have cost a tiny bit more plus however much it would have cost to paint match that one panel. No idea how much that would have been.

That's why you let your insurance company fight for you.

Liability? You dun goofed, son.

They won't do anything as all you are paying insurance for is that they will cover anything that YOU fuck up. A few bucks more and you'd be good and get your car fixed. None of my vehicles will ever be on liability

Go through your insurance, OP. I tried to be a nice guy when someone took out my rear bumper with a U-Haul trailer. I've had cars hit in the past without the driver owning up to it, but she sought me out to tell me what had happened and she was a mother so I went to "her guy" and let her pay out of pocket as requested.

A few months later, I was bringing my car to a different garage paying to have the bumper repainted. I have no idea how the original guy had been in business for three decades.
