Someone on Reddit has a good idea about Mario.

I hate these posts.
Its possible to be clean and functional without being sterile and bland as shit like the NSMB games (the wii u edition exempted of course)

If you're going to tell me that this is too "detailed" or "quirky" or whatever, you are a crazy person.

You're not rebuking anything he's saying. Orioto's interpretation of Mario has tons of things about it that wouldn't make for an ideal Mario to actually play. Just because Wario has drawn 2d graphics doesn't make it any less true. There is a world of difference between the Wario picture you posted and Orioto's art.

Did he say he endorses sterile/bland design? There's a happy medium between sterile NSMB and Orioto's (awesome) art. And it's important that it remains clean/functional.

I dunno, I just only ever see these posts defending the art style of NSMB games

This suits Kirby more than it'd ever suit Mario

And then he's just like "Mario Paint!" Like "Remember that game! That was good, too! Clap if you liked it like I did!"

I hate this kind of thing, it's like their starved for some kind of "gamer e-cred"

Just so everyone now, my art isn't meant to be a game anyway. That's why i can justly free myself from those ergonomic constraints, and it wouldn't be good for a game just like that indeed.

Now that doesn't mean there isn't a way to make something look good and moody WITH those clarity rules.

For the record, your Metroid drawings made me sad. Another E3 gone with no hint of another 2D Metroid.

Crazy thing I just realized:

Super Metroid (1994) --> Metroid Fusion (2002)
Metroid Zero Mission (2004) --> ???

8 years and counting. Seemed like there was an eternity between Super and Fusion, but we'll actually end up waiting even longer between ZM and whatever may come next.

And again:

it's a good thing that Nintendo fans aren't in charge of designing Nintendo games.

(Love orioto's work, though)

This idea is fantastic, but many other things are possible if you look around a bit in the literature and art. It seems that only Nintendo lives in a closed box.

Nobody on reddit ever has a good idea. Unless of course it's stolen from someone else. The first image is from a gaffer, the second image is from /v/. Fuck you reddit.

What's so sad is this is 100% true. It's one of the very few absolutes in the known universe.

How many times are we gonna see "MARIO GAMES SHOULD LOOK LIKE THIS" with the same fanart? I mean, the artwork looks amazing but it really does not suit Mario's style as a game. Not defending NSMB's sterile as fuck art direction though.

Also fuck Reddit. And fuck ragefaces.

How about they create a new IP?

I want a game where Mario has imprisoned Bowser, and you take your pick of the Koopa Kids to go rescue Daddy. Have it so that you can pick which character you want to use between levels, like the different colored Yoshis in Yoshi's Story.

Though I'm pretty sure I've mentioned this idea on here before.

Once again reddit receives hate by people that think crap subreddits like /r/gaming are representative of the entire site. You just gotta unsubscribe from the major subreddits and search out the smaller ones.

Try these subreddits for games:
r/Games
r/truegaming

Here are some of my favorite non-gaming subreddits:
r/depthhub
r/truereddit
r/askscience
r/askhistorians
r/historyporn
r/subredditdrama <-- I wish GAF had something like this. It can be very entertaining.

The whole structure of things being upvoted on Reddit means it's nothing but a circlejerk for le karma.

Um...I'm gonna have to go with no on this one. That style does not fit the Mario universe whatsoever.

I think most people dislike reddit because of how terrible the community is. Popular opinions are pushed to the top and people who speak out are pushed to the bottom or made to feel "wrong".

Stop reading the big subreddits. Try those subreddits I linked to for starters and then from there search out for more specialized subreddits you may be interested in like r/roguelikes or r/comicbooks. If you're into PCs r/buildapc is a good place to keep up with the latest good value hardware.

Reddit is like usenet where anything goes, only more mainstream, so there's going to be a lot of shit. You just gotta filter out the crap subreddits.

I was going to compare Reddit to the last person in an internet 'human centipede sequence' (with 9gag hungrily awaiting to devour whatever is finally pooped out) BUT DEN I TOOK AN AROW 2 LE KNEE LOLOLOL XD

I think that the painting function could be really interesting. Maybe we'll see something similar for the next Kirby U episode!
About the graphics, Orioto's a genious, but we already have both Trine2 and Rayman Legends arriving on the Wii U with a painted-artistic style. Honestly I like the plastic New Mario style less, but I also prefer to have variety to the style approach.

What's the deal with reddit? Haven't been there for ages and don't know why it's considered the dark side nowadays.
People only read the default subreddits and base their opinions on that. It's a shame because there's some quality on reddit, you just got to search for it. Heck, there's a subreddit dedicated to making fun of the stupid shit on reddit which I'm sure some people here will get a kick out of.

Ok, I'll stop defending reddit now. Continue with the hate circlejerk(oh the irony).

The cool thing about reddit is it got 2,000,000 views. The not so cool thing about it is that it transtaled into 1500 views on deviantart :p Nobody sees the source in general, and maybe 0,1% will see there is an actual store.

:(

Lot of hate for reddit on here! It's the best time wasting site for a smartphone, hands down. Also, r/Roomporn.

vaguely on topic: the last pic on the list on the reddit list, a graveyardy scene (shadow of the beast, maybe?) was incredible, the background in particular.

I think a game like Wario Shake is how a 2D Mario needs to look, but IIRC people said that Wario shake look too sterile (even with its amazing animation) and could have more bluff to it (so i suppose they meant like what Rayman has now)
People will never be happy.

Even if I like a little better the looks of NSMBU I think 2D animated characters would look a thousand times better.

I wouldn't want then whole game to look like that, but maybe the backgrounds.

super-mario-bros-u.jpg

I love the screen, but look what it fails at it, the fucking Mario shitty 3D model (it would look better if they used the Galaxy one). Having something, as I said above, like Wario shake's 2D characters would work wonders blending perfectly with that type of backgrounds.

Stop giving that community publicity.

guess what, that community is pretty much most of gaf as well. Threads on the front page of gaf usually have come from reddit and vice versa. There has been a noticeable jump in obvious redditors on gaf in the last 2 years or whenever it was that reddit blew up after the fall of digg.

I don't have a problem with any of it, brings us loads of interesting news.

how is that any different from here? this site has just as many circle jerks. Except instead of downvoting, you get called the "Defense Force" or a "hater," if you like something different, disagree, or don't show your unconditional love towards whatever everyone is circle jerking about.

Yeah, platformers where foreground elements aren't immediately distinguishable from background ones are pretty awesome.

The NSMB U character models look great, don't know what you're talking about.

That image in the OP would be terrible for a Mario game for reasons I outlined in the last thread on the subject: level layout clarity that is of foremost important in a platformer as precise as Mario.

Super Mario World 2?
The platforming in YI was nothing like the rest of the series in terms of accuracy or reflexes required. I mean, it was awesome, but still.

Nobodies opinion disappears when people disagree.

In shitty subreddits. It's like basing your GAF opinion on the Forza vs GT Bullshit thread of fanboy shitheads. I love it for MTB, painting, photography, truereddit (heavily moderated with great discussions) and such, plus I've been trying to lose a few and gain muscle mass and it's been extremely helpful. Especially since I don't have to go to 15 various boards and it's newbie friendly unlike many other boards.

It's like going to a grocery store and bitching about how there's no selection but all you do is stand in the Tampon aisle.

In fact, it's exactly like when somebody says "GAF last year thought the 3DS was blah blah" and people respond with "because GAF is one person dipshit?". You have to make reddit what you want it to be, the community is fine.

But, there's hate for it here so I'll stop.

No, I like Mario as it is in terms of mechanics, a tight plat-former, leave the arty stuff for the backgrounds.

Also with regards to reddit I'm glad I'm not alone in hating that place, I have a friend that keeps trying to convince me it's a good website for information but all to often the full breadth and source of the information is ignored, it's like fastfood news, I also hate the voting up of popular opinions, I like a balance of opinions, I think everybody's voice should be heard equally, it's why I love forums, it helps promote debate, not a popularity contest.
