Someone on Reddit has a good idea about Mario.

I would love a 2D Super Mario based on the artwork from the NES days.

I don't know why they can't have 'retro world' or a few levels at least in a retro style in a nsmb game, that be awesome, I love nsmb but I would like them to mix up it a little, maybe even bring in a few 3d sections like a 3d coin rush stage reminiscent of the sonic special stages.

I think its weird to take a picture from an artist, then say "I have an idea" while the whole idea is basically already presented in that picture.

I know that Orioto already said that his art isn't meant to be a game, but it's hardly an original idea to then say "I'll do it anyway"

Nintendo could learn from Ubi with Rayman but they're rather release a cheap ugly Mario and increase profit.

Nintendo?! New IP?! Are you nuts?! How would it ever sell quadrillions of copies?!

Nintendo creates new IPs all the time. Have you played Pushmo? Xenoblade? Rolling Western? Any of the ArtStyle games? They create like ten new IPs every generation and almost half of those are usually good. (there's always a healthy dose of FlingSmashs and Steel Divers as well)

The art is excellent. However, I will note that I highly disapprove of platformers that are designed with fancy art but makes platforming difficult because the art obscures the locations of platforms and actionable objects as they blend in with the background. AVGN has covered many, many classic NES/SNES that commit this crime to the genre.

When you have to resort to eShop titles and bad games, you can see what the problem is.

Er, what? I know they aren't "character driven IPs", which is apparently the only kind that matters, but Pushmo is an excellent game, no two ways about it. Xenoblade and the ArtStyle games as well. How about The Last Story? That Pandora's Tower thing coming soon?
Also what does the fact that some of the good new IPs are on the eShop have to do with anything?

It shows that Nintendo's big in house titles keep relying on the same IP over and over. I liked Pushmo and the Art Style games, but they don't address the big issue, which is that Nintendo's big releases each generation all tend to be the same IPs.

And this is why. "Pretty" can often detract from "functional," and I'd very much prefer my games to be the latter.

The people defending reddit are completely missing the point. I don't think anyone here has qualms with the "good" subreddits. We've heard you say that plenty of times before. The problem we have is that the shitty parts of the site are the vast majority. When you have that many dumb people going to this primarily shitty website, their stupid *le raegfaec XD* shit begins to permeate society. We get that shit posted on Facebook and twitter, monetized and turned into products, it appears in advertising and pop culture, and it's really fucking annoying.

When we direct hate at reddit we're directing our hate at the shitty things that come out of it, which I would estimate to be about 95% of the site. And no, I don't think I'm going to sift through that shit to find the nice ones if I can talk about whatever I want here or elsewhere without getting downvoted for being different.

Why is this even a thread? We thought this was a good idea when we first seen that piece a while back.

The last thing I care about is Redit overflow garbage as a thread on here. Come on now. I thought we had thread standards!

Not sure there is a single IP/theme/new idea that would make me want to pay more than 5$ for a platformer at this point. (that said the same is true for military fps)

I guess its a big deal if you're a story and settings kind of guy. But if you're a gameplay focused person, I don't see much difference in in Company A doing a version of Company B's game with a different focus and a new feature or two.

My Mario idea is still best Mario idea, reddit:

I always had an idea for SUPER MARIO UNIVERSE, in which it was 2D. It had worlds like the traditional Mario series, but each world was themed after a very specific Mario game. So World 2 might look like take on Super Mario Bros. 2, implementing the style into the modern age. World 4 might be like Super Mario World. One like Yoshi's Island and Mario Galaxy and Mario 64, etc. Each world would contain individualized formulas that have been tried and tested, but then there would always be mechanics to really subvert your expectations. So you would never truly know what to expect.

But in each world, the visual style would change to suit the Mario game it was impersonating, and the audio would have both new tracks and old homages to each of the older mario games. The last world would be a crazy convergence, where the Marioverse literally breaks down... each level would be an insane mixture of all the Mario games, and you could find yourself working through the gameplay quirks of five or six different Mario games all on a single level.

Come at me, bros

now you made me idea sound shit and I don't want to play it anymore

f uuuuuuuu

I don't play Sonic games anymore so I don't know about Generations at all, but, I highly doubt SEGA can do anything half as good as Nintendo can anyway!

Isn't complaining "Why did you post this?" / "oh lol reddit" bannable now? I know some people got hit in the OT. Who cares if it is from reddit?

...The art style, while lovely, would need some work to help distinguish the background from the fore ground. The OP also does not specify exactly how the Okami gestures would work.

I'd love to seem them do a more artsy Mario game. At least some levels in the U game looks like they tried a little harder.

EDIT: Amir0x, Nintendo may not have liked your idea, but Sega sure did! If it makes you feel any better, it was the best Sonic game in years (In that it was actually quite great).

If the "New" Mario Bros. games had this art I would be far more accepting. I also would welcome the idea of "painting" objects into the world or having the tablet player be able to draw things on screen. That is something early 90s Nintendo would be open to I'm sure.

look i love oriotos art, but i would not want to play a game that looked like that. the characters get lost in the backgrounds.

Gaf's pitch so far: no, thank you.

The tablet mechanic on the mentioned gameplay takes a part so huge it's not even funny. Just like the first DS game series where touching was essential and F the rest.

That's an horrible idea. The art is gorgeous but for a platformer it lacks clarity and would be frustrating as hell to play.

But having an Okami sequel on the Wii U could be cool, the brush strokes would be much easier to do than on the Wii.

It would work better for Yoshi's Island. Take an art style like that, give it some dark outlines and it would look great.

No idea what he's talking about with brush strokes though. How would that effect gameplay? There is no explanation.

As much as people seem to hate Reddit, I think that is a pretty good idea.

1080p, nice painted art style like the one used in Rayman Origins, use of the Wii U controllers touch screen to draw doodles that does things on the screen, sounds like good fun really.

There isn't enough le cats or circle jerking.
Anyways, I'm not seeing how a brush mechanic would do anything for Mario, would enemies be harder to kill, easier? Would the game have puzzles? A Bigger world? Glacial pacing?

I like specific subreddits. I don't like reddit's default subreddits. I removed /r/videogames from my account because it's terrible, puerile garbage.

The idea is a terribly generic mash up as well. Mario & Okami & epic mickey. No ta.
