Someone tell me about Space Channel 5

I played the demo, and thought it was fun enough to drop $120 or whatever it costs, and it was a bit of a huge disappointment.

I really couldn't get past like the second level, because my sense of timing without visual cues is terrible.

In all other rhythm games, I use the music for the rhythm, and the visual cues to get timing,b ut Space Channel 5 was just way too hard for me. I heard the PAL DC version may have had some difficulties with button timing,b ut my friend and his sister, both of whom are musicians practically finished the game on their first go. :(

My least favorite Miz game... just couldn't get into this one for some reason, plus the lack of on-screen indicators made it a lot more confusing for me - then again rhythm games aren't my genre of choice.

Fantastic series the 1st game is great but the 2nd one improves on it in every way imaginable. A steal at $10 and its pretty rare too.

I liked the first one better.

I don't like the instruments. Also light/left gets pretty anoying in part II....

Buy..now..

Best Music-Rythm-Style game on the market. only the completely different EBA und Ouendan almost can compare.
Alltimefavourite.. Legendary.

The first game is definately worth a playthrough for any gamer, though I can't comment on the sequel since I've never had an opportunity to play it. Did Part 2 ever make it to Dreamcast, or has it always been a PS2 exclusive?
I was a big fan of the first, but the second is approximately 5 grillion times better. You just can't call yourself a SC5 fan if you haven't played it.

The only bad part is that there's no new areas on the second playthrough like there were in 1. But there's a hard mode with new characters and different lyrics and such. Otherwise, the dances are better, the new instrument/singing sections are rad, the rewards are better (dance routines/songs change entirely based on successful rescues), there's a ton of outfits you can earn, the music is better (IMO)... It's super-sweet.

This game is ****ing hilarious. How did the manage to get Micheal Jackson in it? :lol :lol :lol

I just beat it for the first time with Ulala. I didn't expect it to be so short.

We were in the middle of production of Space Channel 5, in 1998 or 1999. I got a call from the US from my partner (the exec producer of Space Channel 5), and he said, "Oh, Michael wants to act in Space Channel 5." I said, "Who's Michael?" "Who is Michael Jackson?," he said. "The Michael Jackson, the real Michael Jackson!"

My partner had shown him the 60-70% complete version, when it was almost at the end of the game. We had one month to finalise. But Michael wanted to do something so we suggested that if he was OK with it, we could programme the people in the game do the Michael Jackson dance when taken over by the aliens He said yeah. We initially had five aliens who danced. One of them became Michael Jackson.

Beat it... with Ulala? You can't beat it with anyone else, so...

ProTip: After beating, save the game, and start your New Game
for a chance at playing new sections. I say chance because it depends on your ratings percentage.

When I first saw character profiles on the menu, I assumed that I'd be able to use other characters. I guess I was wrong. I already started a new game. It says extra mode or something like that. *shrugs*

Bumping this because starting a new thread doesn't make sense, regardless of the forum suggestions. ;-)

I'm a big music/rhythm game fan, but I hadn't gotten SC 5 Special Edition till recently. Just played through it today and enjoyed it. I didn't do as well as I would have liked my first time through, so I played through the Extra mode and ended with 100%. Funny that they have one last press after the credits.

I have to agree with marvelharvey about the game's problems. SC 5 commits the cardinal sin of rhythm games - having some notes that are off-sync with the music (this was a problem with the first Donkey Konga too, though for that it was all the time). It's like the game can't handle some of the patterns or something and it stutters, so the rhythm is not precise like it should be. Fortunately, this happens infrequently, and you can tell what the rhythm's supposed to be. ALSO, there were multiple times where I was 100% sure I pressed the buttons correctly and I got a miss. Not sure why that happened; I know it wasn't because I was pressing the wrong shoot button.

Anyway, the game was cool, but what I'm really digging is the music, particularly the first songs that play. I love good jazz/funk/"groove" music, and it's rare to find it in games, so this was a very nice surprise. Makes for particularly enjoyable drumming music.

Looking forward to playing Part 2 tomorrow based on the comments in here. :)

I wish they would port these games on PSP so I could play it on the go. How was the GBA version anyway?

Odd.

Although GBA + GBA Player + GC + Mario DDR pad = odd times.

You cannot resist...

Part 2 is better than the original and has one of my favourite soundtracks of all time. I've got them all, even the Non Stop Megamix. I still listen to it to this day.

I lived and breathed this game during its time.

Hey a Space Channel thread. Anyone know why the PAL version of Part 2 on PS2 is apparently so bloody rare? Some wanker's selling it on Amazon.uk for like $400 AUD. Just wondering, I mean I bought a pre-owned copy at EB ages ago for $15. Did Sony only distribute eight and a half copies in the UK or something?

Space Channel 5 and Bust a Move were the best music games ever. Nothing will ever come close to the joy they brought me. I wish more were made. Space Channel 5 part two lets you play as other characters but the story scenes still involve Ulala mostly. Bust a Move was just genius. The sequels to both games only improved on what was already there though some of the tracks from Bust A Move 2 left something to be desired. They never should have parted with Avex Trax... all in all good games that you should hunt down. (Get the imports for the Bust A Move series. The english ones are censored to hell)

Seeing those YouTube clips posted earlier in the thread made me realize how much I missed this series. I can't say that I've played the second SC5 yet, but I played and adored the first installment when it initially came out on DC (and gladly paid full price). I refrained from games for a while when Sega exited the console market, so I missed out the second SC5. After reading a bit of this thread, I'm thinking it's about time to give SC5 2 a try.

edit: Some fixes. Shouldn't have had so many beers tonight.

For anyone interested in Space Channel 5 SE for PS2, if your local Circuit City has the game in stock, you can purchase the game for the grand total of $2.99. My local CC (Fresno CA) had a few left in stock as of last week. Needless to say, it might be a bargain :D

I don't think it got a UK release at all, so PAL copies are Mainland European or AUS sourced.

The game wasn't released in the UK *at all* as supposedly no retailer would buy any stock from SCEE since the first one sold so badly (they published the sequel in Europe, before Sega started publishing their own titles).

It came out in most of the rest of Europe, and most of the PAL English language copies that you see on eBay, etc came from Australia where it was released, but obviously in small numbers. The PAL version of the game is genuinely quite rare.

No kidding...

I bought mine off eBay for AU$19. It's still in pristine condition too. There's no way I could sell it though, I love it too much.

Really?! I was in Fresno yesterday, but didn't stop at CC there. Maybe the CC here (Merced) has it... $2.99 is a steal.

$10? Doh, it was $5 like during Christmas. But $10 is still great

AND BUY THE GAME! If you like rhythm type games at all you'll most probably like this game. The music in the game rocks too. Guitar Showdown scene in Space Channel 5 Part 2 for the ****ing win

LOL those characters sure move weird and janky when they play guitar. They look like they're in the wrong game. Maybe Silent Hill would suit them better?

OTOH, I would say that this is a misperception.

Space Channel 5 does not have any timing issues when it comes to the actual gameplay. If you follow the music and press buttons accordingly, you will do well. There IS a problem with the actual (dub?) voice synching. When you press a button, Ulala will not shout the input until almost a half second later. That is why people think that the timing is a little off on the game. Because when they hear Ulala shout, it is a little off synch. But the actual button inputs are totally synched.

How can I say this? Because I've beat most of SC5's levels without making a single mistake just by following the music. This would be pretty much impossible to do if it were really off sync.

The PAL version of the first one does have timing issues.

Space Channel 5 was so short, but its a spectacular game. Especially since you can get the Special Edition (Both games in one) on the PS2 for about $5

This game needs a Wii version.

Seriously. It would be perfect.

Ooh! I read in part 2 that no matter your rating you can still continue on to the next stage as long as you don't run out of hearts/whatever.

Main reason I couldn't get into part 1. =/
