Sonic Adventure 1 & 2

Where do I start when I talk about these two games?

People may bash them today, but to me they are pools of nostalgia and I'll never forget how great they were, especially when they first came out.

I really do have so many great memories that stem from both of them. The cheesy but awesome level music and the amazing final boss songs (Live and Learn! Hanging on the edge of tomorrow!)... The time in Aug. 2000 when the AC in my house broke so I spent day after day playing Sonic Adventure at my friend's house and the time when my DC wouldn't work JUST before SA2 came out and my friend happened to be on vacation that week... I can't even hope to remember them all.

Yes, they may have tons of glitches; no, they may not stand up to modern platformers... but for a person who wasn't allowed to play M games, they defined late 90s/early 00s gaming.

Discuss your memories of SA1 and SA2, if you have any.

yeah, I love both. filled with many, many flaws... but goddamn, I had fun. stupidest fucking storylines in any game ever, it kept me laughing

I have the Gamecube versions of both and have sunk so many hours into the chao garden. The only emblems I'm missing from 2:B are the chao karate and race ones. I finally bred a chaos chao and was going to train it to finally get those last emblems, but after I unhooked my GC I never got back around to it.

Someday...

SA1 - sleeping over at friends house for 10 days. playing it everyday. when we unlocked super sonic it was so awesome. So awesome.

I remember getting my Dreamcast VIA UPS on December 24th 1998 with Sonic Adventure.

I played the damn game endlessly until I beat it the next morning. Then, started over to tackle some speed runs.

Sonic, I miss you.

I still love them. I have the Dreamcast and Gamecube versions of both. And some of those glitches are a lot of fun, especially in the first one :P

I could never finish Big the goddamn Cat so I never got super sonic :(

did he have any special powers over normal sonic? or was he just yellow?

Sonic Adventure is the best 3D Sonic game to date. Normally, this would be an insult, but it is not, because Sonic Adventure is fuck awesome.

Sonic Adventure 2 is slightly worse, if only because the treasure-hunting and mech missions are worse than they are in Sonic Adventure and they constitute a major part of the game (oh, and the game introduced Shadow, the cancer that is killing the Sonic franchise). Most everything else is better, though, from music to Chao minigame to the Sonic/Shadow levels.

I love that fucking Hedgehog; why does he now continue to abuse me? ;_;

I was playing SA1 the other day (for nostalgias sake), and glitched out almost immediately in the first action stage. I was running along and started brushing up against a wall and then the next thing I know I've fallen through the world into an endless pit of nothing. :lol

Nevertheless, this game justified my launch day purchase of the Dreamcast. I worked all Summer, and the DC was the first console I bought with my own money. Those were the days...*sigh*

you actually FLY over the water while playing as him, against perfect chaos

I thought SA 1 and 2 were great when you were actually playing with Sonic. The rest felt like a a chore until it was time to play with Sonic again (except for Shadow stages)..

I remember seeing the DC demo unit before it was released at a Babbages and it had Sonic Adventure running on it. It had the most amazing graphics I'd ever seen. When I finally got a DC and the game I loved it immediately. Still one of favorite DC games. SA2, not so much.

Can't hold on much longer - But I will never let go
I know it's a one way track - Tell me now how long this'll last
I'm not gonna think this way - Nor will I count on others
Close my eyes and feel it burn - Now I see what I've gotta do

IMO SA2 was the most perfect 3D conversion a Sonic can have. SA1 was pretty good, but I didn't like the free roam that it had. Save that for an RPG. The fact also that it had 2 different scenarios to play was also nice. This is what a 3D Sonic game should be. Simple and fun.

Sonic Adventure 2 was quite fun for an early gamecube title....really enjoyed the Sonic/Shadow bits, especially Sonic's final rush, when you could bypass the level, falling halfway down.

come to think of it, I don't know if I actually ever finished the last episode....

I remember the first time I saw sonic adventure my mind was blown by how good it looked next day I was begging my mom for a dream cast and sonic.

Man that game was great best sonic game ever.

Live & Learn

From the works of yesterday

You may never find your wayyyyyyyy

Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 were amazing.

I have a hard time enjoying Sonic Adventure anymore.

It just feels so... sloppy. The collision detection is balls and the way some things are handled feel kind of slap dash. The game just feels really, really dated. More dated than a lot of PS1 games.

I'd love a totally remade version for the 360/PS3, though.

I loved Sonic Adventure 1, SA2 may have even better Sonic (/ Shadow )levels, but they made the Tails levels so boring in SA2 compared to SA(1).

Emerald Coast Time Trials. I was once in the top 100. It was awesome.

Also, Sonic Adventure 2 is a pretty solid game. It needed Time Trials. >:O

I remember renting a Dreamcast from Hollywood video before they were released (anyone else do that?). Sonic Adventure was the first game I put in, and the graphics shocked me. The next day I went and preordered a Dreamcast from TRU :D

I actually own a copy of Sonic Adventure: Limited Edition (which I believe what Hollywood Video was renting out). Not sure what the differences are, or if it's even worth anything.

SA2 was the first Sonic game I ever played and I was tremendously impressed by it.
After I beat the awesome final light mission (Final Rush), I went on to the dark campaign, which was similar, but still different and entertaining...

And then a few hours later I was sitting there as the credits rolled thinking 'that was awesome, but it didn't really tie up the story very well'. At which point, they tease the third campaign and I'm floored by the game's awesomeness.

Me and my friends did the same damn thing. So awesome.

I rented a DC from HV too! Man, that made the wait for launch even harder. That was an awesome couple of weeks, and SA seriously blew me away back then.

Not to be a downer but to me the first Sonic Adventure felt like a convoluted mess even back in '99. Bad characters and cutscenes and music and adventure elements and urgh. There were flashes of awesomeness but it just tried so hard and fell so flat. Everything between the runningsuperfast action setpieces made me groan.

I really never bothered with the series after that so I don't know about the rest.

I was a pure Sonic fan back in the day.

I bought a 32x just to play Knuckles Chaotix.
I bought a Sega CD just to play Sonic CD.
I bought a Dreamcast just to play Sonic Adventure.

I loved Sonic Adventure, it was graphically the best thing I'd ever seen at that time and I really thought it was fun... until I played the shitty friends levels. At that time I was still a little kid, like twelve or thirteen, and even then I knew the game wasn't good. Especially when I started falling through the floor in some places.

Sonic Adventure 2, that one I loved at the time. Nowadays, it's not great, but the Sonic stages are still pretty cool.

But God I could not stand the music in these games, especially after the awesome Sonic tunes I was used to in the Genesis games. :(

Despite the Sonic Adventure love, you and I will probably be the minority on this one.

Probably, but that's not to say the original Sonic Adventure didn't have great music. Sonic Adventure 2's OST felt kind of uninspired to me, though. Sonic Adventure had a terrific, very polished blend of rock, jazz, and ambiance. Sonic Adventure 2 felt like somebody just shredded random chords on a guitar for a couple minutes and called that a song.

The OST for Sonic 2006 finally stopped doing that and has a surprisingly good soundtrack. It's more... light rock/easy listening in places.

I dig the original Sonic Adventure so much that it's probably one of my favorite games of all time, and I am willing to recognize it really doesn't belong there but I am powerless to stop it.

Sonic Adventure 2 is a good game, but the forced play of other character types through one story arc feels flitzy. Just as you get used to one you're back playing hold down the "X" button with Tails. It gave the game a jarring feel to me, which was probably more noticeable because the original felt somewhat organic. Each level had it's place in the world, you knew exactly how you got there.

Sonic Adventure 2 is the chops next to the original in terms of level design, where we saw levels open up in new ways when you played through them with a different character.

Sonic Adventure 2 and the original Sonic the Hedgehog constantly fight for being my favorite Sonic game. I know everyone shits on the shooter and treasure hunt levels of SA2, but I didn't mind them one bit. The Sonic/Shadow levels were superb, but the other levels threw in some much appreciated variety. There's really not one part of the game I'd throw away, and I don't get to say that about many games. I guess Sonic Team made the erroneous assumption that they were selling their game to Sega fans that played the wide range of arcadey titles they pumped out at the time, and not just Sonic fans. It's a shame what happened with the 3D Sonics afterwards, though.

Sonic Adventure STILL has the best opening FMV to a game to date - IMO STILL.

Also I loved Sonic Adventure 2 - the Knuckles levels were just a bit too big for his own good.
