Sonic and the Secret Rings - IGN review (uh oh)

sonarrat said:
Seems more like "pretty good with one huge issue that you may or may not be able to tolerate." Pretty much how I felt about Sonic Rush.

Well, I think it is obvious that it doesn't suck.

I agree on Sonic Rush, btw.

6.9, eh? Well at least that means it'll probably be the best Sonic game since Sonic & Knuckles.

I'm gonna guess:

Sonic the Hedgehog Genesis series >>>>>>>>> Sonic Rush >> SATSR >>> SA and beyond.

7 plus or minus 0.5 sounds about right and is pretty consistent across all these reviews. At least IGN isn't repeating the moneyhat 8.0 review for Sonic Heroes.

7.5 seems to be about the average right now.

But this could be another ExciteTruck type situation, where the game is actually awesome and reviewers are taking off points for nitpicky reasons.

Some of us got Excite Truck right from the start... I'm not going to post a link because I don't want to be that guy who links to his site in every post, but I gave ET an 8.0 at launch and said it's the best Nintendo racer since F-Zero GX.

well, looks like that's another $60 i can put towards CDs instead of video games... at this rate the next game i'll be picking up is Tiger Woods '07. That's a phrase I never thought i'd find myself saying :)

That's what they said about Sonic Adventure. We know how that turned out.

I never felt they got the Sonic formula right in Sonic Adventure or the other games, but it sounds like they got the right idea with Secret Rings, I think they can build on it and make it work, kinda like how Capcom went from Street Fighter to SF2

Yeah but, this is Sonic Team. With the Sonic Adventure series they just seemed to add more and more bad things without fixing the broken things from the first game. My faith in them not repeating the pattern is pretty low.

Edit: I guess my point is, we better enjoy this game for what it is because waiting for an improved version might never pay off.

Is this Sonic Team? That was never very clear to me.

I thought it was. Maybe someone can clear this up?

Sonic Team Japan. It's Sonic Team USA that's been doing the latest "Adventure" series incarnations (Heroes, Shadow, Abortion and his Shitty Friends, etc), but Japan did the Wii Sonic. Ogawa, who I believe was director of the Panzer Dragoon series, helmed this particular project.

5 on sound for Sonic Wii
7 on sound for Wii Sports

has Matt booted up Wii Sports recently? it's the most anoying boot up music in the history of video games but he gives the sound of Wii sports a 7

and what? 5 for sound on Sonic?

Nintendo fanboy revenge agenda for the 16-bit war confirmed
I don't think you've heard some of the songs in Sonic Wii.

And I thought Matt gets shit for hating on Nintendo. Which one is it?

I was sort of hoping for a more concise 'Yes/No', 'Thumbs Up/Thumbs Down' type of review. "After over a decade of disappointments, is Sonic (with or without his shitty friends) finally worth another look on home consoles?"

It was a very good review.

For those on the fence: Buy the game. There will be some very frustrating moments, but overall the experience is beautiful, addicting, fresh, and fun.

That's how the review is summed up. He eve says he only gave it so low a score because he feels you shouldn't have to go through the bad to face the good, and that he wouldn't let this 3D sonic get away with a few problems that others did because of the novelty fo 3D.

It's a good title. Support Sega and the sequel!

I would love for a Sonic-only game with Sonic/Shadow-like levels from SA2.

Is that too much to ask? :(

BTW, I am very happy with the SATSR reviews. It looks good. :)

The sad thing is, people now will make the decision that this game sucks(even though the score isn't that bad), without having ever played it, based on this one review.

Like many were assuming it was going to rule before the official reviews?

Come on, this is not some no-name game, Sonic can still sell on brand name alone. Just witness the many people still promising to buy it in the various Sonic threads. The faith is strong in the Wii community.

I assume it will rule because it looks like it will be fun.

Reviews mean jack shit to me. Just one man's(and in this case, a Sonic/Sega hater) opinion.

I'm not expecting this game to be awesome or anything, but I wouldn't say I'd listen to Matt's opinion regarding Sonic as a whole.

But my point is this review, along with the other mixed ones, don't seem to matter all that much. A new, game-starved system with a promising, big-name exclusive are an overwhelming combination to many early adopters. It's like Sonic Rush all over again.

It looks like some people were waiting for highly positive reviews to shove it in the face of doubters, but otherwise, their mind was already made up.

I'm starting to hate SEGA. I've been a fan since the genesis but this gen isn't starting good for Sonic. Unless they do a radical overhaul of the series, there is no hope. They need to hand the series off to someone talented.

I know! I loved those stages in SA2, but could hardly tolerate the big ****machines you had to walk around in with Tales/Robotnik and digging around a level for 30 minutes with Knuckles/Whatsherface.

I think I've made up my mind on this game and will probably pick it up in a day or so.

Skipped the whole development of this game, and this whole thread?

I don't know what you mean. All of the other reviews were mostly postive. The game has a few flaws, but they all say it's exactly what everyone was hoping for.

I doubt anybody was expecting a 9 or a 10 out of 10 type of game.

Merely 'good' Sonic will do. Much better than mediocre(Sonic Heroes), Awful(Shadow), and historically shitty(Sonic '06).

And for the record, Sonic Rush had glowing reviews. And it didn't sell very well, either. So I don't see how it's Sonic Rush all over again.

Dear Sega;

It has become apparent to me that you guys have forgotten how to make a good Sonic game. That, or you've just never figured out how to make a good 3D Sonic game. Lucky you, I'm going to tell you how it should be done in a "general" sense.

1. Get the team that did F-Zero GX. These guys didn't eff around when it came to F-Zero GX, which was great (accept for the insane difficulty).

2. Completely and utterly ditch this punk band bullshit, and get a good guitarist with a good electric guitar. Get some music similar to that of Yngwie Malmsteen. You know, something to "pump you up" while running really fast. Adrenalin rush type music.

3. Make sure each level has plenty of obsticles. Don't make it where a player has to "stop" much. Mario is famous for pitfalls and shit, Sonic should be famous for spikes coming out of the ground, shit falling, etc, that he has to avoid while running at insane speeds. Timing your jumps, etc, should be a big key in these games.

4. Hedgehogs + Guns = No.

5. Hedgehog + Human = Beastiality jokes = No. Sonic should be in his own world, the only human there should be egghead.

6. In case you eff up the music, add an option to let the player use music from his SD card like Excite Truck.

Now keep in mind, I've only played like one 3D Sonic game. It's REALLY not that hard to know what would make the games good.

Your friend:

Austin

6.9 and 7.4 is not good any way you look at it unless your comparing it to the 360/PS3 game. A stripping the game down to just the Sonic levels and adding Wii-mote controls is not a radical redesign. A radical redesign would a total gameplay concept shift.

This is simply the Sonic game we should have gotten years ago and its too late in the coming. If this had been released back when the gamecube/PS2/Xbox era first launched, it would have been a much better received game.

o rly.

Come on guys, the reviews are NOT bad. It's obviously an above-average game. What more are you expecting out of this? It's an enjoyable, but flawed game. And Wii owners are starved for content at the moment. What's not to like?

If people weren't expected big scores, then why the anguish and uncertainty before the reviews hit the Net? Obviously, DOA fans aren't expecting glowing reviews for their next installment of their favorite series so it doesn't matter if their game can't score a 9 or 10. Can you seriously tell me people were not hoping, or even expecting, better all-around scores for this latest Sonic?

You can still claim your own personal expectations were never that bloated, but you can not claim as much for others. There was hype, fed by previews and glowing impressions from some at E3. And hype is usually not associated with just an OK game.

Come on, you're supposed to be a Sonic fan. You know this goes beyond surpassing a string of so-so 3D titles. People remember when Sonic games used to be big deals and are hoping this latest title would at least rekindle some of that former glory.

And for the record, Sonic Rush had glowing reviews. And it didn't sell very well, either. So I don't see how it's Sonic Rush all over again.

Sonic Rush was supported with a healthy dose of hype. It wasn't just a case of people welcoming yet another good game, they wanted that one in particular to be great. Same as this game.

Just arguing, nothing personal. : )

All right. I will say, my personal expectations were not high enough to think the game would be 10 out of 10 material. Those that were were only fooling themselves.

But of course, that doesn't matter to me, as I love lots of games that garner average/above-average reviews.

I do have high expectations for this game. From what I've seen/heard so far, it looks excellent. I'm picking my copy up in about a half hour(or whenever FedEX delivers Gamestop their supply...). I don't expect everyone to enjoy the game. Hell, I fully expect a full-on hate thread for this game any day now.

I'm just saying, people need to put these reviews in perspective for a moment. 7/10 is not bad. In fact, it's quite good. I'm just trying to remind people of this fact, before everybody starts screaming off the deep end about how Sega sucks and how Sonic games will always suck, etc etc.

Give the game a chance!

And btw, nothing wrong with a little friendly arguing. :)

incidentily, for the SUPER Sonic nerds, Ian Flynn, writer of the Sonic comic, mentioned this on his site:

Hey folks!

At long, long last I can finally spill the beans on something that's been in the works for a long, long time.

Those of you who buy your copy for the Wii's Sonic and the Secret Rings, you'll receive a mini-disk that contains a comic done by the Archie team. This item is available only at Target stores. I'm not sure of distribution, number in stock, or any of that. Just that you need to go to Target to get it.

The story won't have anything really new for hardcore fans, but it does investigate Sonic's past, friendships, and tries to get into the head of new-comer Shahra a little.

The creative team consists of:
Writer: Ian Flynn
Penciler/Inker: Tracy Yardley!
Colors: Josh & Aimee Ray

Enjoy!

Oh dear, I won the game as part of a contest, but that does tempt me to buy the game.

Dammit Sega, I'd rather have the comic, not the wristband!

I just called my EBgames, and they told me they won't get it in for a week because they are Canadian. Should I start hitting the Wal-mart's and TRU's for this puppy?

I've got my copy (along with VF5).

It almost feels like a Dreamcast release day (sure do miss the excitement of the DC). Can't wait to dig into them.

I agree with pretty much everything Matt says here. That's a new and somewhat frightening experience for me, I assure you.

Why spend $50 on a slightly above average game?

Oh well, I guess I'll hunt for a Wii when Super Paper Mario comes out.
