Sonic and the Secret Rings official thread

That was only in the cart racing mini game

No, the whole game, except the multi-player options. But the NGC port fixed that. This was the reason the environments were more spartan than SA1, but it was a nice trade-off.

Gee, did any of you (aside from dark10x) actually play the game? Just play SA2 and then switch to DC SA1 and the differences in frame rates are as clear as day.

The video review was very informative, the game looks great. Of course I will probably agree with Shane a lot more than Greg, I look forward to doing all the missions. The best aspect of SA2 was getting A ranks on all of Sonic/Shadow's in all of the missions in each stage, the amont of skill it took gave me a huge sense of accomplishment. It seems this game will do the same.

I CANT FREAKING WAIT TILL WEDNESDAY! (also for VF5)

I actually can't wait for this game.

I already know, no matter what the publications say, I'm getting this. I love how it plays, I love how they say its challengine and sometimes frustrating, and I love how there is a nice, meaty chunk of gameplay.

Man where are the reviews on this game? It comes out in 3 days.

There's an off-the-cuff video review from EGM floating around here somewhere. Excellent commentary from both individuals--I'm not sure who they are, but they sound like both parts of myself in their descriptions.

Basically here's what they said:

1. If you're thinking you're going to be disappointed, you'll be pleasantly surprised -- this is the first good 3D Sonic in 7-8 years. Yes, they visually compared it to RE4.

2. If you're expecting the second coming of Christ, or just the second coming of Sonic, this is as close as you're going to get in 3D, but they could still make some improvements.

3. The music is so bad its good. They were serious. Like, bad music that you bob your head to as you play. I got the same impression, but I love the music that I hear in the review.

===========

I have to say, after watching the EGM review, and seeing the game in motion (It looks ****ing great), and hearing the music (Which I honestly loved every clip I heard!), I'm kinda growing hyped for this game.

Actually, **** that. I AM hyped for this game. It will make a perfect bridge between SSX Blur and Super Paper Mario.

I've seen the 1Up Show/EGM review, but I'm talking about places like IGN and GameSpot, the usual review suspects. The Shane/Greg back and forth was nice, but I'd like something a bit more in depth, with a number attached to it (yes I'm a score whore). At least 1Up should have a text review up by now, since they reviewed the game on the 1Up Show.

So any of you guys know for sure what fps this game will run at?

Locked @ 30 - none of the sites who have received review copies or have played near-final version in the past month or so have mentioned any slowdowns, and the director mentioned in Nintendo Power that it's a constant fluid 30fps. He also said in one of his 50000 recent interviews they tried to go for 60 in the beggining, but ended up putting in a lot of effects and blur and such, and figured that instead of a fluctuating 30-60 (which is more jarring) they'd lock it 30 - or something to that effect.

I just heard the IGN podcast.

while they have some praise for the game, it doesn't seem like they were very fond of it.

something around 6.5 and 7.5 is what I expect from IGN.

they repeatedly mentioned some "techincal flaws", whatever they mean.

:lol

He's just going to come at you with, "It's better than the 360 sonic," which we've known all along. A giant pile of turds is better than that. Silent Hill: The Arcade is better than that.

what i'm trying to figure out is if “best 3d sonic ever” means that i will like it. i never owned a dc or a saturn and i've been underwhelmed with the recent sonic efforts that i've tried.

Yeah, IGN sounds like they'll give it in the mid 7's after the podcast. For me, however, I'm going to pick up Sonic regardless. I can't wait for the challenge, even a little frustration is what I want in my games.

Get Sonic Adventure DX on the Cube, if you have it then. Only some noticable breakdown in frames in one area but the rest is pretty well. And it's a great game. Didn't like SA2 too much, too little running.

Relax! We haven't even gotten any friggin reviews, yet, despite it being labelled the best 3D Sonic ever by more than 1 major publication

They did mention two specific flaws with camera and controls:

1. Because the camera turns automatically, it will turn when you don't expect it and all of the sudden you won't be in the right position to dodge an obstacle anymore.

2. There are enemy arenas where you have to beat all the enemies before you start moving forward again, but the camera doesn't turn around, so when you meet the opposite wall of the arena you have to back up blindly and risk getting hit.

The 1st issue I think is probably not much of an issue. If you were going into this game expecting anything else, I don't know what to tell you. I'm honestly expecting to do a lot of fast reaction and memorization to master this game. The second issue does sound rather silly, especially when all they would have had to do is make Sonic circle the arena or take a repeating path through it. Apparently they did not do this.

I think we have our wires crossed here:

What I'm saying is that the only part of the Dreamcast version of Sonic Adventure that ran at 60fps was the Twinkle Park cart racing game (selectable from the mini games menu - not the TP level) the rest was 30fps.

yeah, thanks for reminding me what they meant, I was barely paying attention.

That girl Jessica feeling more love towards wii play than towards SatSR left me with a WTH feeling. She was like " Whatever " in regards to Sonic wii but went on to praise wii play because it's simple and fun, blahblah when everybody know's it is a shallow demo..

While I haven't played any of both games, I hope she is just some kind of casual not into this kind of game rather than her being an expert that knows her stuff around and declaring Wii Play at $10 a better treat than Sonic wii at $40-50.

I have lost faith in humanity when they praise a $10 demo disk more then a full fledge real game.

I have Wii Play, I unlock the mini-games, then I never played it ever again, I just went back into play Tekken 5 DR instead.

This is kind of sad for an official thread. It's like four pages of people wondering whether to laugh or cry.

I still have high hopes. The video and the music have almost sold me. This has at least moved itself up to a rental at the very least.

At least we're still wondering. Ignorance is a half-bliss.

On the embargo thing, I don't suppose we'll be seeing a repeat of last Sunday/Monday's midnight reveal of the GoW2's reviews? I guess this isn't anywhere near that level of interest or importance.

wow, it's the first time i'm listening to an ign podcast, and probably is the last.

this podcast makes me appreciate 1upyours even more.

If you're talking about the IGN Wiik in Review one, well, at least consider yourself lucky you didn't download their Game Scoop podcast. That shit is nails for your ear canals.

i did accidently start listening to the game scoop first by accident and then discovered that the evil man that gave the greatest game of 2006 "God Hand" a 3 on 10 was on the podcast and I just shut it off and deleted it right away

anyone who gives God Hand a 3/10 is a douche.

anyone sitting around the guy who gave God Hand a 3/10 and laughing and agreeing with his stupid review are a collective group of douche bags.

so what would you call the guy that sits around at home and posts and whines about the different opinion someone else had over a game you obviously liked?

Answer: king douche

Not me. I've been with it the whole time, and I'll get it on day 1 and be back with impressions.

Dispite a few camera flaws and maybe one or two moments where 'backtracking' is annoying, this is the SONIC I've finally been wanting. Only Sonic, all about speed, 3D awesome graphics, and plenty of classic Sonic dialogue and music cheese- straight out of the 90's baby I'm all for it.

This game is going to rule!

well, then you would have the call everyone in the LTTP: God Hand thread the same insult you called me, because we God Hand lovign Gaffers disagree with the IGN review and i'm not the only one voacal about the IGN review

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=138977

Kevin Smith is over-rated IMO

So lessons learned from the team that made SatSR; No mission breakdowns. Just make more normal levels, and you might have a hit critique wise.

Again, not everone loves every game. But because you did and someone else didn't you call him a douche.

And I could care less if you think Kevin Smith is overrated. Guess what? Q-bert sucks.

To be fair, I think the guy is trying to say, "if this guy doesn't like a game that I highly value, I can't trust his or anybody that associates with him 's opinion."

when you think about it, a 3/10 is a serious statement for giving a game such a low score

this is nothing like the Zelda fans complaining about the Gamespot 8.6 score.

this is a freakin' low 3

games that get 3s are bad, bad, bad games that are unplayable, unfinihsed, unenjoyable

it's not a question of OPINION, everyone has opinions.. but as professionals they can't review things with a personal dislike, they must be objective

you see, I don't play Madden, I don't understand the rules of Pro Football. Would you have me review a Madden game? case point, I'm unable to review a Madden game 'cause I'm unqualified

like this IGN guy that gave God Hand a 3 while 1up and GS gave it 8s. a 8 and a 3,, there is a big difference between those two numbers and you must justify why those numbers are insanely different
