Great review, Craig. Very informative.

Luckily previous missions can be replayed to gain more experience and level up Sonic with new attributes that often help to pass some of the more difficult areas

Didn't even know about that beforehand.

His praises actually sounded like it deserved it more than a B+, but if he gave Rush an A+, I think that's a great sign for Secret Rings.

Sonic and the Secret Rings is an encouraging sign that good Sonic games can still be made. I had a tremendous time exploring the different stages and the skill points add a bit of depth to an otherwise straightforward game. Some of the missions can be extremely difficult at times and I became frustrated with a few of them. Luckily previous missions can be replayed to gain more experience and level up Sonic with new attributes that often help to pass some of the more difficult areas. For the most part, controlling Sonic with the Wii Remote works great. There were a few times when the game didn’t recognize my gesture to use the homing attack and several times I accidentally pulled back on the controller, causing Sonic to stop and walk backward, but these were few and far between. If the story was told better (or ditched altogether), the music closer to the Sega CD Sonic, and the missions a little less maddening, the game would have received an even higher rating. As it stands, Sonic and the Secret Rings is a game I would recommend to anyone with a Wii. It’s good to have the blue blur back!

I really like GA's letter grading system, and I like how they review.

It seems as if number reviews have fallen into this rut where something below 80% is very bad, but something like a B+ has a much more positive connotation, although it probably equates to a 70 or 75.

what's funny is that I agree with his past SOnic ratings

he gave:
Sonic 360 : F
Shadow : D
Heroes : B-
Rush: A-

and those grades are relativeley close to what I felt when I played those

so a a B+ from someone who rated those older games like that = a good good thing for SoTR

but I would still have bought it anyway

*good review, Craig

B+ is high 80s

I've played it for a bit (I'm an editor at a Dutch Nintendo-magazine -- didn't do review duties on this one but got some hands-on time regardless) and was unimpressed to say the least. There are a few spots when it truly soars, but just as many spots where it grinds to a complete halt and you have to deal with a controlscheme not at all tailored to those situations (you'll wish you had an analog stick before long). Also, the presentation of the story scenes is very two-gens-ago, not that stuff like that matters. Every level past the second one also feels like it was rushed to meet deadlines. I'd give it 5/10 based on these very tentative impressions and discussions with the reviewer (who liked it slightly better, giving it 6/10).

Thinking of Sonic Adventure 2 made me go back and play through a couple of the Sonic levels. I made a video of a run I did through Final Rush - Sonic's last and most rediculous level:

I loved this level despite it being so hard - you'd really have to be in a 'zone' of sorts to complete it - no novice could finish it without running out of lives very quickly.

Love it.

If only the game was actually as effortless to play as you made it seem. That was amazing.

That's what makes it so good, though. You CAN reach that point if you play enough. As your skills increase, the game becomes so much fun.

The Gaming Age review is nice. I would have liked to know more about the mini-games, but at least it cleared my mind wrt the main game.

SA2 is amazingly simple, its hardly anything as annoying as sonic nextgen was.

I still play it most of the time when I get the dreamcast out :D

I remember getting to areas in space, but never finishing it. I just couldn't get used to controlling Sonic, he was too floaty for me.

If you watched only Rlan's video and just that of the 3d sonics, you'd have thought the formula was perfected years ago. That looks great.

The Gaming Age reviews seems good, but Sonic Heroes getting a B- by the same person doesn't exactly give me a lot of hope :/ No offense to the reviewer.

Actually, the formula they had was good...they just had to flesh it out into more levels like it..

Unfortunately, that level is the best 3D Sonic you'll ever see. Though, SA2 had a lot of amazing Sonic/Shadow levels. I've said it many times before, if they made a whole game with levels just like that, it would be a AAA title.

Why they deviated from that formula with Sonic Heroes/Shadow/Sonic 06, I'll never understand.

Damn that review got me psyched. This'll be in stores tomorrow correct?

I'm going to 'attempt' to pick up my reserved copy in about an hour...it's supposed to be out today...but you know how it is with Gamestop. They'll get it in 'whenever'.

Holy Bawls! This 3d sonic game doesn't suck?? I'm pysched. I'll either buy it today when I go get Crackdown, or tommorow when I get VF5.

And people say Secret Rings is on rails..

edit: I like how it gave you a B. What more did it want? :lol

i think someone posted the score from ONM, but ill do it again if not

81%

+ controls breathe new life into sonic
+ ring customisation is a great idea
+ visually fantastic, detailed levels
- can occassionally be frustrating
- the 40 mini-games lack depth

Sonics wii debut is by no means perfect, but its still a fantastic game that finally gives the blue blazer the sort of fast-paced, slick action he deserves. its tricky to master but once you do it really shines

I think people wanted this to be the game that redeems the Sonic franchise, but it just came out to be a really good game.

80 - 90 is still in the "Release day" buy range for me. Hell, I bought Elebits, so why not.

Damn it, I want this game, but I'm completely broke. I may have to let Gamestop rape me with their trade-in values. Meh, we'll see.
