Sonic and the Secret Rings official thread

Is there any way to turn off the music? If I have to listen to that song that plays in the first level one more time I'm going to throw my Wiimote at my tv and break it.

:lol Custom soundtracks where art thou =\

i just got the game today.

not bad! quite a different SONIC experience....it was thrilling to play..

I agree you should be able to lower the volume of the BGM.........hearing those same songs over and over in those prologue levels is really bothersome...

I just rented the game and some of it was just wow but some of it made me wonder why Sonic Team was still allowed to make games. It just seems like all the 3D sonics are so frustrating for the wrong reasons.

It's pretty fun so far. Yes, it can be really frustrating.

But what strikes me most of all in the overall presentation. All the menus/storyboards/fonts/etc look completely amature.

I tought I was the only one thinking that about the menus. :)

best lookig wii game by a mile, but for this sonic fan, thank god i bought ssx, and rented this chunk. the whole time i wanted to explore, but was relegated thru watching my blue blur just rifle past evrything by himself at times.

meh, AT BEST.

Well I bought SATSR, beat it, and never even considered SSX. So I guess the REAL winner here is me.

no need to agrue guys, i rented both, playing sonic now, loving it, sonic should be on rails. No need for stupid exploration. its all about speed.

I haven't palyed ssx yet, waiting for gamefly to send the damn thing.

I don't even think Resistance is very good, but its infinitely better than Secret Rings. Get Resistance. But at least rent Sonic since some people are apparently blind to it's awful execution.

Really, Resistance is a much better value than Secret Rings. Even if you don't like the single player, it has co-op and multiplayer to keep you entertained.

I just wonder if it's worth the current price. I'm really juggling between this and Resistance.

You'll probably get a lot more instant satisfaction out of Resistance. SATSR is a great game (number wise, I'd give it an 8/10, leaning more towards Craig's opinion of it than Shane's), but it takes a while before the game really picks up.

The thing about SATSR is that I think EVERYONE jumps in wanting to go from level to level, and the mission structure of it all bogs it down (and it does). What SHOULD have happened was a classic Zone/Act/Boss progression as with the 2D games with missions being optional. Sonic starts slow and clunky and gets a lot faster the more you play (which is also frustrating to anyone expecting a 2D in 3D style Sonic). It takes a couple of hours to reach a point that feels like you're having fun, which shouldn't happen in any game, to be honest. Still, once the going gets good, it never really lets up.

There's a good amount of challenge in the later levels, and, as Shane said, some of the missions are actually fun. There's a ton of unlockables to find and replayability is pretty high. What surprised me personally was how much platforming is really in this game. Unlike say, Mario, where it's all about building enough momentum to make a jump, you have to time your stops just right. So you'll be jumping over a platform, but you'll be moving too fast, and you need to quickly anchor Sonic in time or you'll overshoot what you need to land on.

The last level in particular is pretty good, and I've enjoyed several of the missions (including one called "don't get defeated," which basically follows the rules of the 2D Sonic games where if you lose rings and die, you're gonna have to do it over.

I'll definitely get it at some point, it just doesn't sound worth $50. $39.99 sounds about right; though only $10 cheaper, I think it would have made a difference.

Keep in mind Schwowsers has about the lowest opinion of the game of anyone who has posted in this thread outside Amirox. I'd pick Resistance too, but that's just because I think Resistance is a really, really good game, whereas I think Sonic is just a good one. I just had to say something because I don't believe in judging a game by the opinions of outliers, positive or negative.

edit: except in the case of Excite Truck. Reverend David Long of the First Church of the Holy Excite! should be trusted in all cases of Excite Truck faith crises.

Oh I'm not judging it based solely on his opinion. In fact I was really replying to Ani's post.

Don't know if this was mentioned yet BUT-

The game has *BUMP-MAPPING*. I've seen it several times! How exciting!

Well I picked up this one today and I'm not pretty sure if this game does 480p on PAL version... the box displays 50/60hz compatible only, and I can't see any progressive signal when playing this game.

Is NoE messing with us again? I want my 480p games bitches.

The No Pearls mission in the pirate cove keeps handing my ass back to me. :\

That mission requires the most pinpoint precise "platforming" I've encountered in the game thus far, but man does gold feel good.

Honestly, I'd rather they keep the mission structure, but alter its presentation. The real issue is not that its mission-based, but that its rather abstract in the menu presentation.

You don't really get a clear picture of what's available, how it progresses, and how you're doing.

I think a Mario World over-map that helps you visually chart progression and show the barriers between zones would help. Then you would see which missions unlock or expand the playable zones.

HELL NO.

I'm glad Sonic Team is still making Sonic games because to me the Secret Rings isn't a real Sonic game.

100% absolutely agreed!

Great idea.

This game is phenomenally shitty. Please don't let nostalgia rob you of 50 dollars like it did me. The VC download of Sonic 1 is ten times more fun than this abomination of a game and it's only a tenth of it's price.

i personnaly don`t aprove of the mission stricture and the item upgrade structure

some of the upgrade discriptions are extremely vague and you are forced to equip them to see what the hell they are about.

I would preffer standard Acts in Zones and upgrades being more minimal and having a better controlled character from the get go

upgrades for imporving movements, jumping, homing, back tracking are stupid upgrades that should not exist because the character should of had these from the start.

I hate RPGs and leveling so I`m not keen on the item upgradability stuff.

i`m old, just like my avatar yeas

I can't believe some people don't like this game. It's an RPG-platformer in a completely new realm. Get upgrades and get GOOD at this game, and its pretty much Sonic Adventure one but a lot faster, better graphics, and smooth, awesome platforming moments.

If someone has problems with the game, thats cool, but if someone hates it, I think it's safe to say they aren't any good.

I like the game AFTER I GET THE UPGRADES THAT ALLOW ME TO PLAY PROPERLY I like the game

like in my 2nd play through will be more enjoyable, but during the 1st play though at times where an upgrade with of been convenient well you must suffer.

I hate RPGs and i hate Leveling, Sonic games should be clear from any RPG element because he is about speed and there is no speed in RPGs just slowness

but I do like the game, but I don`t like it when my character is gimped of his abilities because he doesnt have em

OMG, you gotta play the game! Sure, they could give a 50 page manual for every attribute, but just playing any level makes the attribute's effect transparent.

Opinions are opinions. IMHO, the leveling system gave the game somewhere to go. It allowed the levels and missions to be designed around the player's progressing abilities.

I mean, Sonic just doens't gradually get better statistics: he gets abilities that unlock new ways to play all the levels.

Sorry to be OT, but this is literally the only thread in which anyone responds to me (yeah, I'm new and all that).

What's the criteria for going from junior to member?

I seem to have crossed some invisible threshhold in the last day or so, about which I was unaware. Not that I'm complaining, of course :)

I think you become "member" at your 100th post.

Is there a trick to going in reverse? Say I'm holding the controller sidways, with the 1 and 2 buttons to my right. To go backwards, do they expect me to turn the face of the controller towards me 45 degrees? 90 degrees? 120 degrees? 180 degrees(upside down)?

I can never consistantly go in reverse...

Also, is there a way to maintain your speed after a power jump? Or do a double jump? It feels like I'm doing something wrong when I'm hauling ass, then come to a medium sized wall, then stop, power up, then jump over it and proceed to go back to walking after landing it.

I believe there's a skill that gives you a boost when you land from a jump, great for races against Uhu.

So how does everyone equip their rings? Right now I have 3 rings going- a "speed" ring, for races, an "attack" ring for certain challenges, and a "balanced" ring for regular levels. The only real constant is I've equipped the smooth movement powers on all of them.

There skills you can equip to get a speed boost from just landing or a speed boost from doing a jump cancel (jump and jump again).

Oh boy, do I love the the Jump Dash skill! It lets you get up to speed in a very small amount of space and time. Its pretty useful in the racing levels.

Could someone answer this? Is the PAL game in 480p?

My impressions so far:

I'm in love with this game, I like how missions work because it's very challenging. You have to try and retry a mission to make it perfect, and eventually you'll probably doing one of these two things everytime:

A. Start mission and nail it (unlikely).

B. Start mission, **** up something you need to get your medals or unlockables, press "+" and select RETRY.

Hell, I've been playing non-stop since 19:00 PM... and it's 00:39 AM already.

Screw gaming sites scores, I love you again Sonic <3.

I gave this game a rent this morning, and have played some hours of it. Some words:

- The game starts pretty slow, at first this mission selection looks like an awful choice, but ponce you leave the tutorial behind, everything begins to fit in place.
- Tilting the controller feels natural and very intuitive.
- Jumping on the other hand has some serious problems with timing. Sometimes enemies appear so fast that if you hold the button you will hit against them, if you don't, you won't jump high enough to attack them.
- Going backwards feels akwards (heh). You must turn the wiimote completelly, face buttons looking down.
- I don't like trial and error, not with so much abundance.
- Less rewarding that it could be due to being too much on rails at times. Trial and error hurts it too.
- Awesome skills system. Having four rings to configure is a nice thing.
- Impressive level design and action. Fast and furious gameplay that is a rush to play.
- I somewhat enjoy the music. It's so chessy that you can't get it out of your head.
- Story is god awful, and it gets in the way too often.
- Level structure is clever. You can advance in the game as fast as you want to. I'm trying to beat the game, since it's a rent, but I can envision people going step by step beating all missions befroe beating the game.
- Medals system is always nice, but I think gameplay may be a little unfair for those shooting for gold medals.
- Fast-motion is too fast. It's like you activate it, have a nice drug trip, then gp back to reality, just in a different place.
- The stage of the Pirates has some genuinely impressive moments. I said wow while surfing the waves.
- The air ruins are impressive as well, the wind though is a nasty addition. I got stuck in the beginning of the level, not being able to advance, and had to restart the stage because the wind wouldn't let me run.
- Voice acting is crap, but since english is not my language, I find it rather fun to listen.
- I'm having fun with it, but I can see quite a few black spots that bring the experience down a few notches.
- Best 3D Sonic I've played by a mile.

TheGreatDave said:
I agree with those points. The story is god awful, but I can't say it's got in the way. One button press and it's gone.
Well, since I'm planning on beating it, seeing the story is useful to know which mission should I go next to advance the story.

the wind though is a nasty addition. I got stuck in the beginning of the level, not being able to advance, and had to restart the stage because the wind wouldn't let me run.

Yeah, I didn't understand why that was added at all. The wind is just frustrating...

The story is god awful, but I can't say it's got in the way. One button press and it's gone.

Except for the last cutscene (probably the worst of the game >_>).

Heh, Effreet is a bitch! And for the wrong reasons! I had a hard time beating it, because Sonic would begin running like crazy after doing an attack, meaning a hot bath in the lava. The Dome is probably the less inspired scenario yet. Although Dinosaur Island doesn't fit in any way with the game imaginery, what you actually see is pretty sweet, thing I cannot say about the Dome :-/

I'm a mission away from reaching the last stage, which I've heard it's awesome, meaning I'll probably beat the game today. You know, this game is infested with little flaws and problems that can have you pulling out hairs, but in the end, it's pretty fun to play, and got lots of unlockables and missions to do (with different ratings too). It seems like I might be getting this game down the road.

I just got it 3 days ago. Only got to play it once or twice so far. I'm only on the second stage and if you guys hadn't kept posting that it gets better once you upgrade skills, I'd be very disappointed. The jumping and speed is just wonky.

And the story would be SO much better if they put comic bubbles with the artwork instead of voice acting. The voice acting is horrible. The script is horrible. The artwork is fantastic.
