Sonic and the Secret Rings official thread

You go so slooooooooow! I've got Sonic so beefed up and I'm getting all the Gold Medals now...I run through the levels non-stop. The best part of the game is finding the most perfect "line" through the levels, just like the original Sonics. Speeding like crazy, never ****ing up your groove is so exhilarating. <3

Oh, and this game reminds me of both SSX and ExciteTruck with it's insane speeds and my quest to find the perfect routes through the levels for maximum speed/score.

Truer words have never been spoken...about this game. Seriously though, further on into the game once you've gotten some decent skill sets that improve your abilities, once you hit that groove it's just awesome, especially when nail movements that might disrupt your running like when you have to jump or do a homing attack.

Very true it just urks me at some of the reviews this game has received whatever though...I've learned not to trust reviews it just sucks that so many people rely on them.

You do get used to it, but I don't think it's ideal, esp. when you're tackling a row of half-a-dozen enemies, some requiring multiple hits. However, I haven't had the difficulty some people seem to have had with getting it recognised - it's just a matter of getting the timing right, hitting when the lock-on turns red and making a strong "push" motion.

The move that should have been mapped to a button (or tweaked a hell of a lot more than it is here) is the backstep. It just isn't recognised reliably until you rotate the controller almost a full 180, and even then for every few steps you take, the game tries to force you forward. IMO, removing the need for this or making it far, far more reliable would have been worth the dev time.

Generally, once you get Sonic tweaked and boosted the Wiimote works perfectly, and any lingering problems seem to be issues on Sega's side (though those bloody vines are baffling, as they seem to register any strong motion...)

Oh, and as a sidenote, I'm baffled how anyone could have trouble with Wii Boxing - the game is a blast, and while the controls take a little while to click, when they do it's great fun to nail combos and hooks to flatten an opponent :)

Dont throw it forward...its much easier to twist the Wii remote forward. The forward pushing of the remote grew tiresome for me I like the twist forward better because all I have to do is a quick snap of the wrist rather than lunging both of my arms forward. It seems more accurate too.

I have been a bit hard on this game but now I am seeing the light, the game is getting really awesome. I beat the game with the best ending, that new Sonic is the coolest thing I have ever seen in a Sonic game. Man that final boss gives you a work out, nice battle.

The best part of this game is by far going for a gold medal. Figuring out the exact route to take, what kind of jump to make, what to avoid, what to hit, everything has to come together perfectly to have that amazing run. Now Sonic moves extremely fast, its a blast to run through these missions.

Did you notice this game has achievements as well. You need to play 4 missions with only 3 skills, play 20 missions using only fire skills, and others. one of them is defeat Jinn under level 25 uh well forget that one...

I know, I posted earlier about being unable to do better than a bronze! :p

I need to spend more time going back to the earlier levels and finding fire rings and beating them at speed for more experience I think. I don't have enough SP for a few ablities n' such. Just wanted to show those levels though cos they look awesome <3

So what sort of unlockables have people been getting in the game? I've heard of
The Big the Cat spottings throughout the levels, apparently he keeps a diary which you unlock. I haven't seen anyone mention what kinds of things he plays though

Anything else? Videos, Artwork, weird Christmas Nights esque stuff?

I've been unlocking concept artwork, trailers, cutscenes and music, but I suspect there's more in there that I haven't found yet.

The interface for moving from level to level is horrible. I can understand not knowing where to go in an RPG overworld. But these are ****ing menus and I don't know what to select to advance. What the hell.

It's pretty simple.

World--->Mission----->Ring(customize or equip)----->Set to go.

I love this game. I can't figure out how to beat the final boss so I'm going back and getting gold medals. I love getting gold medals, it really lets you perfect each level into a smooth run. When you finally get it, you feel a sense of accomplishment I havn't felt since F-Zero GX.

...plus each new level unlocked is always flagged up.

That said, I think I would have preferred to have the game progress through the main story missions a little more clearly, flagging them up as such and just unlocking the extra stages as you go. As it is, you don’t really know where the next story level is and you can end up trawling through missions without a clear idea of how to proceed to the next story section, or the next world. That is kinda fun in itself, but I can see how it would be frustrating to many players, and something as simple as marking main stages with a “STORY” icon would have been useful, letting players try and progress through that, stopping to grind when they needed new or upgraded abilities.

In general, I think the game could be clearer on a few things (goals, tools). It's fine, as eventually you'll get it but sort of interrupts the flow of the game. Nothing severe, however. Kind of old school, actually. :lol

Loving it so far. Things I should note:

-The controls/pace isn't very nice at the beginning
-Leveling up and having abilities is great though
-The interface and music isn't bad, neither is the VO(it won't make you cringe)
-Pirate Storm IS awesome
-Why have I only fought one boss so far?
-It will last for sometime
-Vast majority of mini-games suck, but you know that

Don't really want to start a new thread so I'll post it here.. if I was only going to buy one game, should it be Sonic or SSXBlur? My inclination is to pick up Blur, but that isn't out til next week + I'm feeling impulsive, anyone recommend one over the other?

If you can't get both, I would recommend SSX Blur. But only just, they are both great, underrated games.

in all honesty I love blur but I love sonic more. If you can deal with understanding that sonic is a bit gimped at first you will get by and venture on into greatness. Its very addicting trying to get gold medals in each mission and as you level up sonic gets hella fast.

Got it today. Only got Sonic up to level 7 so far.

It's a 7/10 game at the moment.

I had Sonic up to level 49 when I stopped playing (school+work+unplugged Wii+frustrations with Airport = no Sonic).

I'd give it an 8/10. The beginning few hours really DO suck, but holy hell does the game get awesome later on.

Ah but what if you add Excite Truck to the equation hmm

Actually, it is part of the equation because I haven't picked that up either.. my preference was SSX>Sonic>Excite, tho I think in terms of gaf hype the consensus is Excite>SSX>=Sonic? Maybe I'll just start spending next months pay check..

The most amazing thing for me is that for the first time in years, Sonic is cool to me again.

It may have taken SEGA about seven years, but they finally got it right. This is the first 3D Sonic game since Sonic Adventure that I truly consider to be a good game. It's got the blazing speed and top-notch platforming that Sonic was known for in the Genesis days. I don't even see the game as being on rails, not really. It's just a platformer where the protagonist happens to move forward automatically. The level design isn't any more linear than other recent Sonic titles. And hey, at least the levels aren't boring series of platforms floating over bottomless pits anymore. They actually look like environments this time.

Here's my take on the levels:
Sand Oasis: A good first level. It's easy enough to allow the player to ease into the game, but has some interesting features in its own right.

Dinosaur Jungle: This one doesn't grab me so much. Most of it seems fairly mundane, the only real "thrill" being the part with the tyrannosaur. Sure is pretty, though.

Evil Foundry: Wow. Just wow. This is my favourite 3D Sonic level, period. It's the spiritual successor to Scrap Brain or Metropolis I've been waiting for. Dodging giant robots, timing your leaps through pounding pistons, jumping over lava pits...this is Sonic platforming at its finest.

Levitated Ruin: The windy parts annoy me, but chasing the wyverns while dodging missiles is an adrenaline rush.

Pirate Storm: I daresay this is the game's hardest stage as it kills me more than any other. The bottomless pits can get annoying, but this level keeps the pace fast from start to finish.

Skeleton Dome: Eh, another mundane stage. There's just not a lot going on here and the music gets annoying.

Night Palace: A wonderful climax to the game. Infiltrating the fortress is no easy task and the crystal highway in space is a sight to see.

Flaws? The game's too short and has too few boss battles. Gimping Sonic at the start was a poor move as well, I think. But it's still an excellent game.

By the way, does anyone know what the singer is saying at the start of Evil Foundry's music?

There were only 4 bosses in the game, which disappointed me. This is the first game in some time where I am/will go back and get everything. I think I beat it around the 7:45 mark and will probably spend about 4 hours finishing things up. Gimping sonic is easily my number one problem with the game, makes the first hour a slow one. One thing they should have done was include more interesting objectives than "Don't Get Defeated", repeating that seven times isn't that fun.

Not sure but it probably has to do with whoever is going to rock the place...

Probably introducing them and their profession so that people aren't taken by surprise when the place is suddenly rocked.

I think I might be done defending this game. I loved the first few levels, had no problems at all in the beginning... But that level that takes place in the air is just a broken pain in the ass, and the pirate level isn't much better. The race and survival missions in the pirate level are just no fun at all.

hmm so the game is

- fast
- has little problems with cameras
- looks great for a wii game
- is hard!!!! (harcore gamers love hard games i thought)

why all the backlash from the critics.?

Hmmm? I found both of those levels to be MORE fun than the first two...

Picked this up today, had £17 on a Game Card, and traded in Super Princess Peach for £18, so got it for a fiver. Will play it later, have banned myself from it until I actually get some of this sodding dissertation done... So yeah, expect me to start on it come after midnight!

This game is fantastic.
I love the challenge and trying to get golds, It's truly hardcore.
It's the best console Sonic since the Sonic/Shadow levels in Sonic Adventure 2 (yes, those were good).

Does this game have some similarity with Klonoa 2 "snowboard" stages? Looking at movies it gives me this impression; it's fast, forward auto-moving character, gems (rings) to collect learning their disposition, etc... Even if very simplicistic, I enjoyed a lot these stages in Klonoa, especially trying to do perfect runs...if Sonic, as I believe, makes similar things but with obvious better and more complex and evolved design I think I should definitely enjoy the game.

Best music in the entire game.

Air fortress has some problems with the wind. Eventually you can get stuck without being able to advance due to the wind. Other than that, the level is awesome.

Now when exactly is this game going to be fun? I have read the first few hours would suck pretty much, but it should become a great play later on. Now I'm at level 21, played like four hours and I still think it's a very, very mediocre game with some big flaws in its overall design. A shame I spend 57€ on it... ;I

Btw, at least the controls work really good. I like the home attack, feels very intuitive.

man, this game is pretty un intuitive and not very fast, man excite truck is sooooo much better than this game.

I'm going to buy SSX as well and if SSX is crap, I'm going to be mad at GAF for only getting 1 out of 3 polarising games right.

that was your last chance for 3d sonic, you are officially a 2d character (and only a slightly better than average one at that).

Finished the game yesterday. It had potential, but screwed it up. For sequel, I hope they:

- take off the upgrades and give him his full speed, acceleration, jump, homing, etc. at the beginning
- Zone/Acts instead of selecting missions to basically guess what you need to do next
- Better level design for some of the levels/missions. I liked a few of them, but a lot of missions had boring/frustrating levels
- Take away the voice acting and make the story told out comic style
- Hire a better writer who doesn't think making a pinky promise should be a central focus of the game

sega should pretty much just make you the guy that tells people what to do for sequels actually. spot on.

make sonic accelerate faster after crashing or even killing something ffs. Just copy the excite truck thing where you thump the button for boost or something.

Okay, got this game last Saturday, finished it (currently level 42) and it kicks ass!

Some of the missions are very frustrating, but most of them are good. Anihawk, you are complaining about the pirate storm no pearl mission — is it really that bad? I mean, WORSE than the pirate storm no ring mission!? Cause that one was so annoying, especially the last part, right before the goal, with no enemies nor spikes to lose the rings you accidentally pick up in that last part of the level.

Anyway, are there platinum medals? I hope there aren't, because I don't know how I could technically beat my own records on some missions, especially the bosses. God, they get trounced so fast once you get the beefed up long-range version of the homing attack :lol.

Pirate Storm no pearl mission really isn't that bad. I cleared it in about 5 tries with a silver.

But attempting a gold there frightens me. Fortunately, there are no platinum medals though.

I finally got to rent this game this weekend and I was just blown away. Thus far I'm level 18 and have unlocked all the way to the Pirate "zone". I was amazed at how solid this game controls and how exhilirating it actually was. Probably my "Holy crap this game is awesome" moment was in the Levitated Ruins "Go for the Goal" stage when Sonic is
running over the rainbow ribbon with the missles flying all over. It reminded me of Panzer Dragoon Saga and how cool Sega can be when they REALLY get their art direction and gameplay right.
I'll be buying this when we get some more cash freed up for entertainment expenses. This is probably the best Sonic game Sega has made since... god... Sonic 2. It's just an amazing little romp that keeps me coming back for more no matter how many times I fail a mission.
