Sonic Frontiers: World Premiere Extended Gameplay

"Sonic is...le bad!"

I liked it.
Hopefully the next reveals will cover more of the battle system, the various collectables and the plot...also I hope that whatever HUD they'll add, it'll turn invisible during the quiet moments like these

This looks so utterly lifeless and devoid of any charm. Honestly, I don't understand Sonic Team's fascination with realistic art when it comes to their big budget Sonic titles. That world they showcased in the recent gameplay looks like something you see in concept demos or test environments for developers. It honestly doesn't even look 20% done.

Imagine if this had a more lush and colourful artstyle with a dense and inviting open world instead of this drab fest. What could have been I suppose!

Seeing negative comments about the music is pretty confusing. its the best thing in the trailer. Kind of mad Sonic couldnt outrun a bird.

The concept of open world Sonic seems fun, but I can't help but feel like the tone is way off, like they took "Sonic x Breath of the Wild" a little too literally and instead of creating this fun, Sonic-like world full of loops and gimmicks and colorful locations they have this drab, literally lifeless world and ambient music.

You guys didn't think that tower climbing section was fun looking? Had lots of interesting platforming, climbing, wall running, rail grinding.

You guys are going to be surprised I think. Looks like a legit open world Sonic.

I'm definitely interested in purchasing. I like this change of direction.

As far as I am concerned, no. It did look like much fun... What was the purpose anyway ? Only picking up stuff ? You have to give a motivation to do things : challenge, excitement, speed and reflexes, time attack, scoring or whatever. If it is only a collectahon, this is going to be just as bad as any other tedious, boring modern game.

Do a daytime run in Spagonia in Sonic Unleashed. That's fun.

Looking at this extended gameplay, Kirby and the Forgotten Land did better job adding little bit of realism to its world without going overboard.

It okay to go for more natural and grounded environments, but there is no need to go "hyper realism" with Sonic.

The problem is with Sonic Team lack of context.

They want to make a mix of graphics and art direction, but fail in both aspect. They tried making Sonic photorealistic in 2006. They should pursuit an artistic design.
What we got is a totally disconnected world.

If I would start, I recommend using Planet Wisp from Sonic Colors. No graphics pushing, just a very beauty artistic world.

I like the previous Sonic games, but they've all been iterations on Sonic Adventure or the 2D ones. This looks like something new. I'm okay giving it a shot. It does look like a collectathon with some light puzzle/platforming. The tower seemed pretty intricate as far as learning how to get up there. It's definitely the first Sonic game I'm aware of going for a more chill approach rather than lightning reflexes at all times.

One of the main criticisms of Sonic has always been that careful platforming and extreme speed basically never mixed in the first place, which is why the series is cursed. I'm cool with them trying this out once to see if it works more smoothly.

Nah, it didn't really look that fun. It was too on-rails. A couple springs here, a couple rails there, and you're at the top of the tower. If it had some enemy placement and some more challenging platforming (including getting rid of that stupid homing attack - make Sonic have to jump on things again), then maybe it would be more engaging.

I am okay with new things and I like the approach. We will see, but I am not optimistic. If this is simply a copy of what all OW have been doing recently, it is going to be a tedious bore-fest. Hopefully, it will be more than this...

Playing OG Sonic on Christmas morning will probably always be my greatest gaming memory. This looks good. It's just a shame that it's going to wake up the Sonic fandom.

LMFAO this trailer... nothing could set it up better than Sonic jankily running up to some ancient ruins while somber piano music plays, before hitting a jump spring and getting the typical cartoony boing effect. It's such a concise demonstration of the complete lack of cohesion. Nobody working on this has a vision beyond mashing together Breath of the Wild with boost gameplay... nobody thought about what an open world Sonic game would look like, presumably because Sega puts very junior teams on Sonic games and then gives them wild dictates like "make an open world game because they're big rn". Some people have suggested it should be delayed but I honestly think I'd prefer them to squirt this out than work another year and release something mediocre & boring (which let's be honest is the ceiling for this game concept)

I'm very much looking forward to seeing their combat demonstration... they suggested this has some sort of melee combat system, right? If I see any battle arenas like Unleashed and Boom I'm going to scream... if this game has dungeons that are a series of melee fights in circular arenas that might push me over the edge of reason...

Also, this elevator music doesn't fit Sonic at all. The light, ambient music is great for something like Zelda, where you're actually taking everything in and exploring. But this is a fast hedgehog that's supposed to be traversing rapidly around various places. Light touches on the piano don't really make any sense. I'm assuming there will be more upbeat music here and there, but it's just highlighting how lifeless everything feels. Save this music for the chao garden.

I'm really not understanding all the hate. This is the first interesting looking Sonic game in 20 years. I don't need any more "hold right until the level is over" 2D Sonic games with Genesis-launch graphics from 1991.

Release bad trailer
Let the internet complain
Increase budget by 5 million and delay the game
Release new trailer with redesigned visuals
Internet happy
Release the game and it becomes the highest grossing game of all time in he US

Looks great so far. Really liking the overall mood. Should be obvious that this is an early look, as there's an absence of enemies, etc. but the combination of its environment and soundtrack are really good. The final product has a ton of potential.

Visually the game, while pretty, clashes with Sonic. There's no style or flare. Just realism.

The music sounds like it's meant for a chill scene in a Final Fantasy game. Not the adventurous attitude Sonic brings.

The gameplay shoved Sonic's boost formula into what appear to be random hills with literal on the rails segments. There's nothing encouraging you to learn how Sonic moves to explore more like Mario Odyssey did.

Same deal with puzzles. Sonic walks or stands still to do them. Except the hamster wheel where he literally runs in place and that's it.

Individually none of the ideas are bad, but how do they fit Sonic or work together to make a great open world Sonic?

Needs some serious snazzy dressing. That animation where the boxes just kind of fall apart and leanover is lame as can be. Make those boxes e'splode!

I mean, I'd rather "hold right until the level is over" to progress a basic story in stylistic zones than hop on random rails in midair and jump on springs aimlessly for hours on end.

sonic + forza horizon series = sonic frontiers

-not cell shaded
-same shitty green eyes with shit grin
-shitty rails
-shitty pointless puzzle solving to get to the next part of the level
-shitty generic grass/forest level (pathetic attempt at realism)
-no enemies to destroy
+ no shitty friends

A comic-like character in a realistic world seems off. Looks like someone tried out a UE tech demo with standard assets and threw in his own character.

Also, nothing happens. It's so sterile, abandoned and there's nothing to do eycep collecting rings?

As a Sonic fan, who is fond of what the 3D formula can offer at it's best, i find the music on this to be offensivly bad.
It's a really short fucking loop, it's generic and has very little dinamic changes if any throught the gameplay shown.
Not even the worst sonic games have music this horrible, there are some few stinky tracks but nothing this bland.

The gameplay shown while not "horrible" to me, it looks super un ambitious and uninspired, there is no real new interactions that make sense with an open world or sandbox sonic game, it all looks just like sectioned off 3D sonic stuff.
I dread the reality that maybe you'll have to complete missions around the map that load a preset track that is just a tweaked version of the same open world area you are in instead of using what has already been set there in the world and allowing you to use the sonic toolset.

tlrd, the trailer looks pretty underwhelming for what it could be compared to fan prototypes.

I didnt it was even possible to create a game even more boring than Breath of the Wild. Im not lying, i seriously dozed off on my computer watching this.

The music has to be placeholder music, because fighting enemies with this light piano music is really not it. The combat looks like whatever, but it needs some actual battle music or something.
