Sonic has ALWAYS been terrible

as the name implies, i've been a Nintendo fan from the classic era of video consoles, so i might be a little biased but...

i have tried some of them but i could never get down with any of them (and i'm talking about 'classic' Sonic here)

everytime i played Sonic 1 or 2, it feels like i'm jumping in head-first without really knowing what i'm doing

he's going too fast to properly react against enemies and it's indeed more trial and error

the levels themselves have a good amount of 'hidden' items and exploration but there is no sense to do that since everything is geared towards running fast, more like a reaction game than a platform game

give me Mario anytime, he might be 'slower' but he controls perfectly (i also HATE that 'inertia' thing that Sonic does)

Replace Spider-Man with Sonic.

You are 100% correct. Literally the worst franchise still going today despite its publisher doing everything to kill it off at every possible opportunity. I deluded myself into liking some of them for a while but when I actually took a step back (and out of the playground) it became plainly evident. They are the Pain of their age. Games led by marketing. They are mechanically awful, poorly designed pieces of garbage.
The most recent Sonic game(Sonic Boom) is a spin-off not made by the original team(Sonic Team) but by another company(Big Red Button)

I have played the Genesis games for the first time three years ago. Nostalgia isn't the reason.

I'm also loving the hell out of Sonic Colours right now.

The series has its highs and lows, but I still revere the first 3 entries as some of my favorite games of all time. Colors and Generations are polarizing, but I think they're pretty great too. Most of the seriously negative impressions I see for those games come from people who gave them an hour or two and put them down.

Sonic 1, CD, 2, 3&K, Adventure, Colours, and Generations were all great games at least. Sonic hasn't always been terrible, it's inly in recent years that SEGA gave allowed quality to decline. A lack of discipline on development teams and little to no quality control is yo blame for this, not Sonic himself.

The Genesis Sonic games, IMO are worse than most of the trash Sonic puts of these days anyway. I'd rather pay Sonic 06 than beat Sonic 3&K again. They all have great music at least. Generations IMO is OK at best (though it does have one of the best OST's ever.)

Like really, original Sonic never appealed to me anyway. The only Sonic game that I found to be really fun and enjoyable was the, now lamented, SA2B. Maybe that's because I love cheesy stories, and thought the Sonic/Shadow stages were absolutely amazing and didn't even mind the other stages all that much.

I feel that for its time Sonic 1-3 were great, now they just haven't aged as well as old Mario.
I know people who still buy NES systems and OG Mario while genesis and sonic are just kinda like hey I remember that game but I don't want any part of that.

If all Sonic games had been total shit since the beginning, the series would not continue to exist nowadays.

There are many fantastic Sonic games, 2D and 3D. Can't wait to see the next entry made in Sonic Team.

Sega has always taken a lot of bad decisions. The fact that giving the series to western studios like Big Red Button is another one of those mistakes does not mean that everything Sonic related is bad.

Recently, Sonic Team entries have been fantastic. Sonic Colours, Generations are incredibly fun, beautiful games, with a lot of re-playability. Sonic Lost World is also a very strong entry, despite some reviews around the web. It does many thing well. There was also a very good collaboration with Sumo Digital which ended in a racing game that many consider the best of its genre.

I am confident that the next Sonic game made by the Sonic Team will be a good game, that will please the old fans like me.

Where the hell are people getting this idea that Sonic is trial and error? This is very rarely the case.

The appeal of the game is going extremely fast while jumping, getting rings, and not falling into pits. That's not happening unless you memorize the layouts after trial and error.

Sonic 1,2,3, Knuckles were amazing. Especially 3 and Knuckles.
Sonic Adventure DX and Adventure 2 Battle were also good.
Heroes and Riders were decent.
Shadow the Hedgehog was weird but I still liked it.
06 was shit. The other riders games were shit.
Secret Rings and Black Knight were OK.
Sonic Unleashed was decent.
Colors and Generations were great. Like really good. Some of the best 3D platformers last gen.
Lost World was OK.
Boom looks to be shit.

That they've always been bad is definitely up for debate. They've all been pretty different and have been continually evolving sometimes for better sometimes for worse. I think its perfectly fine for people to enjoy them and look forward to them.

Or you just look where you're going and are fast enough to do the right things the first time? Of course trial and error and practice are important if you want to do time attacks, but on the first play through its not necessary.

Sonic was decent in the 90's, but even the "classic" games haven't aged well.

The gameplay was never very good, but the music and graphics were rock solid.

If a game takes more than a couple hours to be good, it's probably not a good game. That is unless you subscribe to the school of Final Fantasy 13 game design.

OT,I noticed you didn't mention colors or generations with any detail. Maybe it's because you didn't play them and/ot your entire post would have been as irrelevant as Sonic Boom.

No? I can see how you couldn't like the first three/four Sonic games.. but seriously, in no metric are they 'terrible'.

I agree. The Genesis games were alright at the time, but they don't hold up at all, especially when compared to Mario games

Let's stop comparing Sonic games to Mario, it's 2014.

I'd genuinely like to hear from people who enjoyed Sonic CD. I've tried playing it twice and I just can't understand where the praise is coming from. The level designs are labyrinthine and disjointed. It feels like it hates me?

He did mention Generations, but it's insane to talk bad about the game. I'm not a Sonic fan and even I had a stupid smile on my face through all that game.

its just your own opinion , so i really don't care

Sonic heroes was good
sonic unleashed was good , even the night levels
sonic colors was very good
sonic generation was perfect

Nope, I played Generations because the graphics were really nice. But again, the gameplay was not there.

Indeed. The only reason people liked it in the '90s was because of its fabricated "COOL" factor, and now it's simply nostalgia goggles.

BULL

CRAP.

How about other mascots marketed as "cool", like Bubsy? What happened to them?

"Cool" marketing alone is not enough, the games have to be good for the franchise to actually take off, and that's exactly what happened to Sonic. The original games were fantastic.

The first two games had no save feature which I hated since I don't want to speed run/finish the game in one sitting, ain't nobody got time for that
Sonic 3 had a save feature which was nice

I liked both sonic adventure 1 and 2 , loved generations

I never liked heroes x lol 06 x the other ones

I have immense nostalgia for the Genesis Sonic games but running through them and reacting to splitsecond hazards that pop into your postage-stamp sized field of view is not fun and I wouldn't touch a game like that now. And the slow platforming between these sections is not smooth. In general the cramped view of 16-bit platformers tends to piss me off when I play them now, but it's especially bad in Sonic games. The Game Gear ones are unplayable.

I downloaded the demo on PC.

- I play classic Sonic, I'm ready to buy the game.
- I play modern Sonic, I decide to skip the game.

Then I learned the 3DS version is entirely in 2D! So I buy it.

- Classic Sonic is awesome.
- Modern Sonic, even in 2D, is terrible.
- I sell the game.

Sonic Generations just wasn't for me, lol.

It was super different. I didn't enjoy it all that much but still enjoyed it. Just go to the past and just stay there for all levels. Its better that way.

I am well aware of that. And it isn't even close to the worst Sonic game. It's a race to the bottom.
Nah Sonic Boom is the worst. More glitches than 06 AND the Soundtrack is bland? Every Sonic game has a decent to amazing OST. Except Dark Brotherhood. Fuck Dark Brotherhood.

OPs should really think before making declarative statements like this like there isn't an argument to be had. I say this as someone who only really has allegiances to a few titles in the series.

Sonic 1-3K are up there with the best of gaming in their generation and now. Sonic CD is the first time in the "main series" that you see Sonic Team's conflict between wanting to be experimental and wanting to put out a wholly solid/cohesive game. CD has great art direction and presentation values though. The Rush series (Rush, Rush Adventure, Colors DS) were also low key great games if not in the same stratosphere of the former that were a cool alt take on Sonic's "gotta go fast" perception versus Advance 1-3's attempts at recreating Genesis game play in the first, going off on a stupid and exceedingly vapid speed before everything else tangent in 2 and coming back to a decent midpoint for Advance 3. The Adventure games are extremely spotty games with some cool moments here and there. Heroes/Shadow/06 are trash. Unleashed was a breath of fresh air and a realization that Sonic Team could make a (half) good game if they would stick to one style of game play and iterate on it versus throwing out the baby, bathwater and tub every fucking time a new Sonic title was developed. Colors was a Matrix bending anomaly that was good for everything it attempted and even reversed a shit load of negative trends that were cropping up in the series. Generations was a beautiful ode to the series in its entirety that can only really be panned for its critical lack of content (that game needed WAY more stages and a better final boss). Lost World shows potential in spades but gets hung up on for being another alt take and for doing nothing with the ideas that came about in the Unleashed/Colors/Generations lineage right before it.

The biggest problem in the series is that there are too many alt takes going at it with games that are supposed to be considered "the main lineage" and all that game play bending with no clearly defined core or backbone is resulting in a franchise filled with more bad takes than whole products, let alone anything objectively good. This however doesn't mean that nothing can come from the franchise or that the series has always been bad. If the franchise really were that bad, you think anyone would have cared after the Dreamcast died?

Original trilogy are some of the best games ever.

Also no one thinks the new games will be good. Read the Boom reveal thread. NO ONE was excited for that game, everyone expected it to be complete horse shit, and it was. No one is disappointed.

I only played the first one which I sold along with the Mega Drive to upgrade to SNES. It was ok but I didn't care for it after I cleared it.

Agreed. I thought they were garbage back then, and I played all of them.

They are in no way better than any of the other "me too" jump n runs from the era.

Sonic as a character is cool though.

I am well aware of that. And it isn't even close to the worst Sonic game. It's a race to the bottom.
I honestly think Sonic Boom is much worse than 06.
Was 06 complete shit? You betcha!
But Boom came out in 2014 and has as many glitches as a game released 8 years ago.

I hate every sonic game (except for dr robotnick's mean bean machine) too but even I'll admit that the genesis ones are decent games, they're just not for me.

You know what the best part of ANY sonic game ever is/was? The Chao Garden from Adventure 1/2... I played those 2 games exclusively for the Chao Garden and for tamagotchi-ing. Hell, I'd likely still buy what would essentially be an enhanced version of Chao Garden if that was all there was to the game.
