Sonic has ALWAYS been terrible

The Genesis Sonic games were no more trial and error than the classic Castlevania or Megaman titles of that era. The bosses have learnable patterns that make them easier to beat on subsequent run throughs, but pretty much every game of the era was like that.

I kind of agree. I don't think I like any Sonic game where he spoke, I don't know why people even continue to care at this point.

Sonic was always felt like more style than substance.

Looking back... All my now-successful friends chose Mario. The burnouts and drug addicts chose Sonic.

I think the Sonic Cycle is more of a product of its time than Sonic is. The only games that it's actually applied to are Sonic 06 and Sonic Unleashed. Everything else either turned out good (Colours, Gens, Allstars Racing), was disappointing but not unplayable (Lost World, 4) or never looked good in the first place (Black Knight, Boom). And yet it's alway posted without fail every time there's a Sonic thread. It's actually a little insulting to the people who do enjoy Sonic's recent efforts that people are using a cartoon tie-in from an outsourced developer to declare Sonic dead.

Anyway, Sonic 1 is a little dated now. The level design past Green Hill can get pretty dull and uninteresting, but I think 2 still holds up and 3K is one of the best games in the 16bit era. Honestly I prefer it to Super Mario World. I think there's absolutely room for another platformer with that kind of design as there's far more to it than just going fast. The rolling physics and momentum make for some fun speed runs and the tiered level design is really well done, so multiple playthroughs can lead to different things. I don't think declaring the Megadrive games to be bad is really very fair, because every bad Sonic game has been bad because it tried something new that didn't work or was shipped ahead of schedule. Usually, Sonic himself is fine.

I'm sort of considering going into a Mario thread, saying the series hasn't been good since Galaxy and then posting creepy fan art of Waluigi.

This is just borderline trolling. In no-one's definition are the classic Sonic games 'terrible'.
It's like someone in OT making a thread stating that all Kubrick movies are terrible. It doesn't generate a good discussion.

Nah Sonic Boom is the worst. More glitches than 06 AND the Soundtrack is bland? Every Sonic game has a decent to amazing OST. Except Dark Brotherhood. Fuck Dark Brotherhood.
Could you really expect to have a Sonic RPG have a good soundtrack?
I find the Sonic OSTs are always really good because they sync so well with the gameplay(i.e. Final Boss music on Sonic Heroes)

The original trilogy is exceptional. Great controls, fantastic enemy and level design and perhaps the strongest collection of original soundtracks in gaming history.

I played CD a year or so ago and it puts most modern platformers to shame; a real gem. Sonic has lost his way from time to time but he possess a magic you just can't deny.

His original design character design is perfect.

There's a reason the 'Sonic Cycle' exists... and it's not because he was rubbish to begin with.

So this is "Stop liking thigs I don't like: The Thread"? Oh well, enjoy whatever you like OP.

OP, what platform did you play Generations on? It is best on PC, and the 3DS version is pretty much an entirely different game.

Classic Sonic games are decent platformers. Not amazing and they haven't aged too well, but are reasonable enough.

I quite enjoyed the original Sonic trilogy + Knuckles back in their original era. I never found them hard to play. I have replayed them in the modern era and for me they hold up. They're good games.

However, IMO Sonic himself is a somewhat limited character. He's fun by himself but aside from Sonic and Robotnik - who is a very cool villain - the rest of Sonic's world building never appealed to me. Sonic Colors did it right by getting back to the utter basics: funky blue dude named Sonic vs this guy who is like Doctor Wiley on steroids who comes up with insane plots like an evil cosmic amusement park.

If a game takes more than a couple hours to be good, it's probably not a good game. That is unless you subscribe to the school of Final Fantasy 13 game design.

Generations takes a while to "get good" because its content is uneven and it fails to learn the lesson Colors demonstrated: fuse 2D and 3D mechanics in Sonic stages, only use 3D where it really works, keep the rest 2D.

Colors was perfectly fun for me from the start, it doesn't have any issues with pacing (it opens up quite fast). Still the best post-16bit Sonic game by a wide margin. It's the one modern Sonic game I can play and feel like it's a good game purely on its own terms, and not due to any nostalgia for the character.

Sonic 1 - Sonic 3&K are classic games that still stand the test of time. They're still very fun speed based platformers that look and play just as well today.

Sonic Adventure 1 and 2 were great games for their times that haven't aged all the well. They're definitely well made games though.

Sonic Colors is a terrific game regardless of if you're a Sonic fan or not. It's a more solid game all together than Generations, but Generations really has a lot of nostalgia embedded in it that can make it a more fun game for Sonic fans. I think if you give a fair shake to Generations (Playing beyond a few levels) that most people will contend that it's a least a well put together game. The modern levels aren't for everyone, but I find them spectacular.

More like "Sonic has never been terrible". At least the mainline ones.

Apart from 2006, all the mainline Sonic games went from decent(Adventure) to fucking awesome (Colours). I haven't played Lost World and Adventure 2 though.

I wholeheartedly agree. Mediocre games since the beginning. People comparing it to SMW are obviously out of their minds

I still love the Mega Drive games, but the newer ones are not for me. Sonic Adventure 1 & 2 have some nostalgic value, but they're not very good games.

Sonic Generations started off well, but it completely fell apart after the first few levels. Not to mention it has some of the worst boss fights I've even seen, especially the last one.

You do a very poor job of explaining why Sonic is terrible, OP. You'd have to be a flat out incompetent player to think that every Sonic game is nothing but trial and error and running into spike pits. Maybe point out some actual examples instead of throwing a horribly inaccurate blanket statement over the entire franchise.

PS: I'd say that the best thing Sonic has appeared on are the Smash games

Lol, nope. Brawl was good in terms of fan service, but an absolute travesty of a fighting game. Terrible balance, garbage online, poor mechanics, tripping, and an extremely tedious Subspace Emissary (especially that Great Maze crap).

Haven't heard very good things about Smash 3DS either, particularly about the controls. Hopefully the Wii U version manages to deliver.

All my billionaire rockstar friends played sonic while the guys who chose mario wet the bed.

Well the Mario RPG's always have exceptional soundtracks.

Sonic Chronicles's music wasn't just bland, it sounded like something went seriously wrong.

Sonic the Hedgehog - Good
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 - Great
Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles - Amazing

Sonic CD - Good

Sonic Pocket Adventure - Good

Sonic Advance - Good
Sonic Advance 2 - Good
Sonic Advance 3 - Good

Sonic Rush - Great
Sonic Rush Adventure - Good
Sonic Colors DS - Good

Sonic Colors Wii - Good

Sonic Generations - Good

Everything else = Meh. Ranges from decent to worst game ever.

Sonic was great like 20 years ago. But those games have all aged terribly. There isn't a Sonic game that I could play right now that isn't a complete piece of shit or a gameplay experience that has has been obsoleted by decades.

They need to just euthanize the character.

I assume you played Generations on console because I've heard the 3ds version of the final boss is actually pretty good
oh yea

you're garbage
There wasn't even an attempt at civility

No. Sonic 1, 2, 3 and K are absolute masterpieces.

Not sure id say all were masterpieces, but they were/are pretty fantastic. I am at a loss trying to believe of anyone could play any of the first few sonics and not have a smile on their face.

OP, care to provide any specific examples of how the original games are based on trial and error? Because outside of a handful of very specific instances (Mystic Cave spike trap in Sonic 2 being one), it's honestly the first time I've heard that complaint leveled against the Genesis era games, and I can't say I agree with you at all.

This thread title is making me feel sick, how can you call an entire franchise bad, especially the Sonic franchise. So many masterpieces like the Genesis games and Sonic CD and also recently Sonic still got it with Colors and Generations (Unleashed was ok).

First four games were better than any platformer produced by Nintendo.
Probably not from a selling standpoint, and I think the earlier Mario games(the newer ones aren't trash by any means, but they are all essentially birds of the same feather, albeit prettier birds).
Your personal opinion though.

I agree. I've played the old Genesis games recently and they're definitely not good. The platforming just doesn't feel right, and never has

I feel like Sonic CD didn't age well, while Sonic 2, 3, & K are still pretty good, if you like 2d platformers. I don't think the series ever had a lot of depth, but it did create a tension between exploring and moving quickly through the levels, with noticeable benefits from each.

Sonic 1-3 + CD are great. Generations was great as well. If they made Sonic CD 2 today, I believe the mechanics would still hold up. I'd rather they iterate on classic Sonic, than try to reinvent things every damn time.

The series as a whole just hasn't been managed well by Sega. The problem is that they seem to have no problems putting out almost anything with Sonic's name on it. If they only held the franchise up to some kind of standard.

Do you think that, nostalgia aside, Sonic was ever good?
Definitely.
Colours and Generations are fantastic platformers, and I loved how they rewarded knowledgeable players with the fastest routes.

The original trilogy also holds up incredibly well, with very fun momentum based platforming, although Sonic 1 does feel a bit weird to play thanks to the lack of a spindash, but I think in more recent ports they just give him a spindash anyway.
