iizuka interview. google translate isnt doing a very good job, but the game will apparently be out in February in Japan.
Don't they already have a Sonic endless runner? I guess this one is supposed to be different because it's 2D?
I'm still banking that this isn't just an endless runner though. They're hyping it up too much for it to be just that.
Wait, if this is mobile... what's the next big Sonic game by Sonic Team supposed to be? I'm confused.
As far as we know, this is the one.
Sonic Team's (not colors storybook LW team) last Sonic game was Generations, a cheap sequel of Unleashed HD. Do you really think that after 4 years, this is thier ONLY project?
I actually enjoyed Sonic Dash more than any Sonic game since Generations.

Cross posting from Sonic Retro.
The trailer's cool in a "let's build hype using Sonic's retro legacy" kind of way but zero gameplay footage is underwhelming and a little disappointing. Even twenty seconds of one stage would have sufficed. Looks like the game's inspired by the classics and is 2D at least. Segabits have more information here and here and Sonic Stadium has more here. Both sites are getting their information from that Japanese interview between Famitsu and Iizuka. Quick summary from both sites:
*The game is a 2D action side-scroller
*The game's out at the end of February in Japan
*Colour powers and companions are mentioned which I'm presuming means Wisp powers
*Sonic is playable from the start; Tails and Knuckles are playable but have to be unlocked
*The game has one or two minute stages; is playable with one hand and has multi-branching paths
*Characters run forward automatically and player input determines jumping strength
*New music will be composed for the game regardless of Flying Battery in that trailer
*Eggman shows up as the end of level boss; the interview notes Sonic recoiling projectiles at him
*50 stages available at first; future stages added through potential DLC
The game is not an endless runner and will have self-contained though also rather short stages. Sounds like your standard low-budget mobile title to me. This can't be Sonic Team's big game for this year. Sounds too limited in scale. Kind of still excited for this but I need to see gameplay footage. Echoing everyone else here on the sentiment that we need to see more before we get excited. Also if the game's out this month we'll have gameplay footage very soon if not runthroughs of the entire game itself.

Look what else is back:
Credit to Clevis from SSMB for that find.
Not exactly the game I was hoping for, but eh. It looks to be 2D, and not just another Temple Run knock-off. I'd much rather have an actual, console release like a Generations 2 or something (Even another Lost World), but so long as this is a side thing and isn't Sonic Team's next "big project," I'm okay with it. I'll probably enjoy it for a week, at least.
Wait, what is this thing circled, and where did you find this image?
From Genesis; to third party, to smartphones.
Looks like Sonic is almost dead, for real this time.
It's a Dark Gaia enemy and I found it at the SonicStadium forum. The watermark shows it's from Famitsu.

Im still really salty that this is a smart phone game. Serious question though, are they doing this to get Sonic's name back out there?
This game has been in the works for a while. We found out about the name the same day the Boom games came out. So it's not reactionary; it's been planned regardless of what happened with the Boom games.
Does Japan even give a shit about Sonic anymore?
