Sonic Team Retrospective: Ristar

This game is the last non-Sonic, Sonic Team title I will be covering for the Sonic 25th Anniversary Retrospective. But ironically, its the first non-Sonic IP Sonic Team game the studio produced!

Ristar is a wonderful game that does so much right, so lets head-bump across outer space!

- - - - - - - - - -

Ristar originated as a rabbit that could grab objects with his ears. This idea and concept was very far along when Sonic's creation was going underway but Sonic Team had issue finding gameplay that would work with this idea. So, they went back to the drawing board and explored other concepts like a Amarillo and.....an Hedgehog.

Fast forward to the launch of Sonic & Knuckles, and we got Sonic Team sorta done with Sonic, so they wondered what they could do next. The Sonic CD/Knuckles Chaotix team went up on the plate and offered to revisiting the lost idea, code-named project 'Feel'.

They changed the Rabbit into a Star, set the games core location in space and decided upon a triply visual style that is not unlike Knuckles Chaotix.

Then the game released on both the Sega Genesis/Mega Drive & Sega Game Gear in 1995 and.....critics & gamers loved the game but it was over shadowed with other hardware looming on the horizon.

One interesting element when this game released is that major localization changes happened, with Psxphile pointing this out to me :D! Thank you for the clarification, as this is a major element to the games release.

JPN/Asia <-> NA/Pal version changes

Ristar got AngryKirby-ed before Angry Kirby existed.

The core gameplay is very simple; a traditional platformer, but with the ability to grab anything. This leads to levels and core gameplay being more traditional compared to the fast levels of Sonic. What makes the game so much fun is the different ways you interact with the levels.

Ristar can grab anything and he can pull himself toward foes for a effective head-but....or you could hold the grab for a flying foe to get across a pit. This extends to level gimmicks, as you can grab hand-holds to climb across objects, vines that can send you upward/downward, weeds that float in the sky, and more!

It makes levels very varied and quite enjoyable!

You visit underwater worlds, play through a Rayman Band Land-style location, ride on skies across snowy hills and more! Level variation is one of Ristar's greatest strengths and its something the game really shows its Sonic roots.

Ristar skiing down a mountain really remind me of a hedgehog racing down icey caps ;).

The boss fights are also well designed, with the fight giving you a clear hint toward the bosses weak point and the locations you fight them in have the fun level gimmicks in place too (at least the sub-bosses).

I really enjoyed my time with the gameplay, as it is really enjoyable :D. The game even does swimming controls great too and playing the game with an analog stick with the SEGA Genesis Collection on PSP/Vita, makes them control even better :).

The games presentation is really impressive as well, with a ton of bright colors and vivid visuals that scream 'Sonic Team'. Just like NiGHTS and Billy Hatcher that come after this, it shows how Sonic Team can master the hardware they work with leading to really impressive looking games.

The music is also very strong too, with this composer working on latter SEGA/Sonic Team games like NiGHTS into Dreams and Sonic Adventure 2 :).

Great sound that really gives each planet you visit a unique identity.

Ristar also has some funny animations like how Sonic has when idle or when you aren't pressing any buttons/D-Pad. Shows the care Sonic Team puts into the characters they create :).

One last thing before the conclusion though, the Game Gear version. I saw very little of this online, so I cannot comment much on this version of the game but it appears to have altered level designs and paired-down visuals....but it still looks really impressive.

The animations are very close to the Genesis version in quality, the colors are some of the best on the hardware and Ristar works 1-to-1 like how he works in the Genesis version (I think); very faithful port, showing how SEGA developers got the hardware of the Game Gear really well by 1995.

Overall, I enjoyed my time with this SEGA classic and its one of the stronger platformers on the Genesis. It has such a simple gameplay style and concept but it works so well in making really fun level design and combat encounters.

One of Sonic Teams best games and a real hidden Gem among the other work the studio has produced.

Now, the Dreamcast Era is concluded and logically, we would be covering the disaster that is Sonic 06 next, right? Well, I covered it already, same with other Modern games like Unleashed, Colors, and Black Knight.

So, it might be a bit disjointed for a handful of games but I will be revisiting a few past threads with some updates to the OP, so will let you all know via thread bump when I do that :).

Now, next up for the retrospective is Sonic's first Wii adventure, so lets join the Blue Blur for a wild fire of a time; Sonic and the Secret Rings!

An excellent game, on par with the best of the Genesis. The soundtrack is also quite good; the last boss theme is particularly high quality.

This is one of my top 5 Megadrive games. Genuinely really love Ristar and it holds up very well. It's such a shame it wasn't received as well back in the day because I remember reading old magazine articles that thought Ristar would blow up in the same way Sonic did. If only...Well, I'm sure if they made a game about Sonic with stretchy arms, it would be just as good as Ristar! Sega were hogging that idea.

Although I will say I can't think about Ristar without also thinking about Dynamite Headdy. They both have such similar mechanics and parallels. Only one is made by Treasure so it's overloaded with boss fights.

My favourite Sonic Team and game and my favourite Sega Genesis game. Played through it recently and the soundtrack and gameplay still hold up. I really hope that it gets the 3D Classics treatment someday.

I really wanted to make that link between Ristar and Sonic Unleashed but felt it was better just to cover the game :').

Ristar is a great game but I guess it didn't explode like Sonic due to the Genesis going out the following year with the Saturn and the many SEGA add ons releasing around this games time period :l.

Still, lovely hidden gem and I can see the similarities to Dynamite Headdy too XD!

The Game Gear game is a shockingly good adaptation of the MD game and much closer in quality to the real thing than any of the GG Sonic games. I wish it'd come out on 3DS VC, just so people could see for themselves.

Did Sonic Team make the Game Gear version? That could explain why its so close to the original.....the Game Gear Sonic's were made by different developers.

Maybe itmight be a Game Gear VC release in the future but not holding my breath on that :(.

God bless Sonic Mega Collection.

I never would've known about this game if it wasn't for it.

Shame it was locked :(.

Never played it through Mega Collection; my first time playing it was with Sonic's Genesis Collection on PS3 and latter on Vita through Sega Genesis Collection.

Gaming Historian did a episode on Ristar :)

Ristar (GEN / GG) - Gaming Historian

https://youtu.be/Y_52L4u_aZQ

Interesting you bring that up, as I watched that very video before making this thread! I learned about the Game Gear version from this video, which I thought never was the case (thought it was Genesis only).

Very great video and highly recommend everyone gives it a watch if they liked the game or enjoyed reading this thread :).

I don't believe so--pretty much every 8-bit Sega game released post-MD was outsourced to someone else.

W....What did you have to do to unlock the game in Mega Collection? Sounds like its really hard :(.

You had play to every game 20 times. This can be made a little easier by starting a game and then exiting from the menu. Still tedious though.

....Doesn't sound that bad, but a real pain if you didn't unlock Flicky and the & Kunckles Lock-On games :(.

Sonic Team's best game.

In a lot of ways, its one of the studios strongest games.

I have a hard time thinking of issues I had with the game....maybe it might of been too hard, but with how frequent continues are and current versions having save-states, that isn't an issue at all.

Sonic Team always made really damn good games when they were allowed to be focused, and their own thing. NiGHTS, Billy Hatcher, and Samba De Amigo are all great examples of this. Burning Rangers is a bit more mixed, but that was less on Sonic Team's part and more so them making Saturns melt XD!

Never finished this because of some wack level parts. Like that Simon Says, among others. Pretty good otherwise. Great graphics and music.

I think this, Sonic 3&K and NiGHTS are Sonic Team's best games. Fan-fucking-tastic aesthetics and art design with rock solid mechanics and controls backing them up.

It was done by Biox, who also did the Game Gear/Master System versions of Streets of Rage 1 & 2, along with Tails Sky Patrol and a few other games.

They also developed the Game Boy version of Mega Man II, which was kinda not good. Must have learned from their mistakes, because Ristar GG is probably one of the best handheld interpretations of a 16-bit console game from that era.

I'm glad a bunch of non-sonic games were included on the Sonic Mega Collection disc. Ristar is one of the few games from that generation I can think of that I was able to persevere through game overs and played through from beginning to end.

RK128, did you consider linking back to the main thread in each retrospective? I would be nice to have an easy way to browse each of these.

I have a main thread that has links to every retrospective: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1191020

I bump that thread up when I finish making a thread. But for now on, will make a link to the main retrospective thread for the remaining threads :).

Edit: Edited the OP to have a link to the main-thread :D! Great advice and will follow it for the remaining threads.

Oh, Biox did it? They also did Samurai Kid for GBC, one of my favourite JP-only handheld games from that era... and yeah, I have to wonder what the hell changed between MMII and their later games because boy, that shit was rough.

I first got to play this when another kid brought a Sega Nomad (now that was a trip!) into daycare. I was blown away by the game. Absolutely brilliant.

Ristar is so good!

And yeah, the Game Gear version is great as well! Honestly, the concepts behind the two GG exclusive levels almost feel MORE uniquely "Ristar-y" than the more thematically-straightforward water and snow levels that they replace. A beanstalk/pirate world that takes place in the boss's dreams, and a frozen snow world revolving around clocks and time being frozen... they are both slightly more distinct concepts that culminate in great thematically-related boss fights.

Very interesting to hear! They took great care in making the Game Gear version based on your comments :). Great to see and might try checking it out latter :).

One of the shining stars (hah) of the Genesis / Megadrive library.

Ideal methods to play it today is if you own a PC there is always the Steam Sega Genesis Classics collection (Got the whole bundle for like $5)

There is also Sonic's Ultimate Genesis Collection on the PS3 and 360.

Still one benefit of having the Steam version of the Genesis collection is that they are essentially legal roms. There is a method to extract the roms from their container pak file and play them on your prefered Genesis emulator of choice.

Much better then using the somewhat limited emulator that comes as default with the Genesis collection on Steam.

Never know that about the Genesis Steam Emulator......thank you for the heads up :D! Really great information :).

Ristar was Sega's Kirby. Excellent, excellent game. It had so much charm. I think the character would still be relevant today had the game come out a year or two earlier.

It is one of the very best 2D platformers. And it is a crime that it flopped and never became a franchise. I think this would have made a fine adaption to 3D unlike Sonic.

Ristar was fucking cool. Really fun game, wonderful art, charming worlds & character(s), plus the entire soundtrack was great. I would have loved to at least see more of the character in more things.

the game was really great, and excellent music too, with splashdown being my favorite. I've never beaten the game though, final boss is quite hard for me during phase 2. one day i'll beat it.

Bought the Game Gear version as a kid. Was very impressed :o Finished the game several times because it was so much fun. It is also one of the more expensive titles on Game Gear if you want it boxed.

I've finished the Megadrive and Game Gear versions and I'd like to quickly weigh in on the differences. It's been a while but here's what I can remember -

The second world is totally different. It's this fantasy dream world type place

ristar-gg2.png

The boss is this sleepy anteater looking fellow. It's a pretty cool fight, because the background keeps changing when it falls asleep.

hqdefault.jpg

The snow world is actually a different planet to its Megadrive counterpart. Itamor's also been replaced by a rabbit that can stop time, in a somewhat less remarkable fight. I don't think there's a fire world either, and the boss of said world pops up at the end, just before Greedy.

Also here's Ristar's beta design. Ya feel?

Feel01.jpg

I'm often considered something of a heretic because while I think Ristar is aesthetically superb, I don't really find it all that interesting to play.

Game Gear Ristar fact: if you play the European and Japanese regions, the second level in each is entirely different, for some reason.
