Sonic Unleashed first gameplay video from GC [must see]

where's that sonic game cycle pic?

this game still make me kinda nervous. on one hand its cool that they are trying to go back to somewhat 2d but on the other hand from what they've shown there is almost zero platforming. plus you turn into a werehog :(

Werehog = Platforming

There, now you should have no qualms. :)

looks... really really good... like a real 3D sonic experience... the level seems huge though... like it can go on forever.

Do I go forward on this rail or that rail? THE AGONY OF CHOICE

This game is going to be the same kind of mess they've been churning out for years, and we haven't even seen the godawful werehog beatemup nonsense yet.

Also loving the inexplicable QTEs in the middle of performing a jump, and some kind of furry friend appearing at the end of the stage, you know, just because we need a new one.

My thoughts, too. :-(

The game just looks incredible - like, one of the best-looking games I've seen-incredible, especially the lighting...

It looks and moves like how a 3D Sonic should... and at the very least, it looks like the 360 version is running perfectly fine - just let us know when the demo hits Sega...

And damn those people walking in front of the camera constantly like that - don't they see it there? Ugh.

Don't know what to think about the "Sonic on Rails!" gameplay though. It looks good but how much freedom and variety are you gonna get here? Can't they just make a free-roaming Sonic game that doesn't suck?

As I said before I'm still on the fence about how this will play, but I must add that even being an old school Sonic fan I don't care much if this plays like a "true Sonic game". I just want it to be fun.

Looks good graphically, but I wasn't feeling the gameplay all that. 2 minutes in the video in till any proper platforming or enemies

though i never really think of Sonic games as platform greatness (unless Sonic CD did the trick...never got to play that one) i suppose many here do. compared to megaman or even mario games Sonic was always about speed and easy jumps so this looks right up my alley. granted i didn't do much "exploration" in sonic games, i just went with whatever was the fastest route to the end of the level. so yeah......i'll probably take the plunge on this one with the 360 version. looks pretty fun. and compared to the flawless run through of that level in the earlier trailer, i saw a bunch of times that the guy playing in this latest footage fucked up so it looks like there's going to be enough manual jumping to keep me entertained.

anyone expecting this to be good has learnt nothing from the sonic games of the last decade or so.

expect it to be crushingly disapointing again, and then at least you give Sega the chance to pleasently surprise you.

anyone with high hopes for a sonic game by this point is either crazy or as optimistic an optimist as there ever could be.

Damn. . .that looks cool but way too effing fast for my likeing.

Kinda like most (or atleast alot) of the game play relies on the button pressing thing from the epic GoW boss fights. . .

Damn. . .part of me simply wants this to not come to Wii so that we could have some damn trailers for Black Knight by now! Them not showing the Wii version sure doesn't help. . .

Looks real nice! I love how fast it is. But I know those shitty friends are going to come up anytime soon and ruin the game :<

Not exactly, at least judging from E3 footage. Werehog seems to be a basic God of War clone, and that carries from the combat to the platforming. Very basic elements.

Sonic and the Secret Rings had some maddening gameplay faults and I still managed to have fun with it, so who knows. :p

if you had expected it to be one of the best five games of that year you'd probably still have been disapointed.

i HOPE it does turn out one of the best games of the year... but thinking that's likely is just begging for disapointment. if it meets those expectations sure, you can throw around an 'i told you so' or two, but is that really worth the risk of being punched repeatedly in the nuts again?

It looks like a fucking roller coaster with very few alternate paths (which just take you back onto the same main path).

I'm glad I took this shit off my want list a couple months ago.

Yeah, well, I don't have such high hopes. Since the start I'm expecting this to probably be a fun game to play in short bursts or something, but certainly not GOTY material.

I don't know about this game. The Sonic stages look like alot of the time you don't really play the game and just watch and the Werehog stage look like crap.

Wow, that actually looks pretty good :o

...one of the other articles mentions an old character returning. It's possibly fake, but, if true, I would imagine that some people would be happy that
Fang the Sniper/Nack the Weasel
is "returning"

Rest of the article says which characters won't be returning, among other things (and that Sonic/WereHog are the only playable characters).

Here's the link for anyone who hasn't already read it.

Just like to step in and say once again, the only "on rails" parts are when Sonic is actually grinding on rails. The behind the back moments are still fully controllable, just in a restricted Crash Bandicoot esque path. Probably to prevent most of the accidental deaths from past 3d Sonic games.

The only QTE moments are when you see long sequences (3-4) of face buttons on screen at once. The little LB or RB that pops up are more or less tutorial style helpful hints. You can use that side to side bounce any time in game. Same with B functioning as a slide.

Also looks like they ACTUALLY fixed the slowdown that happened when you crashed through certain parts.

Wasnt that what most alternate paths in older 2d Sonics did anyway? Just faster/better ways to get to the same goal?

Looks exactly like Sonic Adv 2. Same level structure, etc.

Well there is a little more platforming in this than any other 3d Sonic.

Wow. . .soo many hit-and-misses there.

The opening shot looks like crap but the Wolfhog ones look good for example. . .

Actually, it's the opposite.

For instance, these look good:

wii1.jpg

Good colors and amount of polygons.

wii2.jpg

Also good, enemies are the same.

wii3.jpg

Again, very similar to 360's gameplay. Good draw distance. Mountains are bad but you'll be going so fast it shouldn't matter.

wii4.jpg

Same gameplay from 360, and very similar level layout.

As compared to:

wii5.jpg

WTF?

wii10.jpg

Putting neon lights on everything doesn't necessarily make it look better. In addition the Werehog parts are EXTREMELY slowed down from the normal gameplay missions, so even if it does look better, the difference shouldn't be noticable during gameplay.

Conjecturing, of course.

I don't understand why if they make so many shit Sonic titles, they can't just cave and give a bunch of fans some cash, access to some programmers and make a real fucking Sonic game. It would make monies, I promise. DO YOU HEAR ME SEGA.

They still read neogaf right?

Who gives a shit about the Were-hog?

I can't get excited for this game because of Sonic's gameplay.
Looks like everyone has a reason for not anticipating this game!

>_<

Obviously there can only be one goal in each level.

But in the 2D Sonic games you could go on alternate paths for long stretches at a time before arriving on the "main path" or the end of the level. From this video, it looks like alternate paths just last for about five seconds before you're back on the main path again.

Because this one doesnt look "shitty" aside from some extra transformation, that while not asthetically pleasing to everyone, doesnt look bad gameplay wise?

Not trying to defend the game (won't judge it until I play it, especially considering Sonic's recent history) but it seems more likely to me that this is a video of the first level, hence the fairly simplistic gameplay. I don't think those are QTEs. I think they're a tutorial telling you how to play the game.

You're right, those arent QTE's. The only QTE was that YYX sequence.

Well you've got a point there, then again it is just the first stage...so maybe that'll change further down? Either way im still looking forward to a demo...and probably reviews before I jump in.

And on the chihuahua, it looks pretty off to the side and only a story character/ help character like Navi/Tikal/Omachao/Shaara. So no use in complaining about that.

I still think that looks crappy. I don't find anything there very impressive. Flat looking to me and that hand creeps me out..
