Sony announces PS4 Pro, $399, November 10th

I've preordered with Amazon US but wouldn't be at all surprised to cancel it before launch day.

Just wanted to get in there in case they surprise us between now and then by, you know, actually making it sound good. Which they spectacularly failed to do today. In fact, I'd go further and say today was a mess, and the Pro seems to be lacking any real purpose at all.

Very disappointing.

I'm astounded by the amount of people who claim they don't know a single person that still buys movies? What bubble are you some of you guys living in?

I dislike the Pro Logo. It is rarely a good idea to use a different font in the same logo type- and two Sans Serif at that. It looks messy, and they are not complimenting each other well. To have the pro in a little box is also just dumb.
The spacing of the letters is way to narrow, making it annoying to read, and the weight is optically wrong compared to Spider-Man PS4 font. Major dislike on top of already disliking PS3 and PS4 Logos in general.

I wish Sony had taken a look back at their excellent PS2 logo with the pleasent blue gradient. It signified gaming, had sharp lines that made it feel like it had speed and that it said something. Something which carried over into Playstation 2s generally awesome confident and obscure creepy marketing and tv ads. viral and meta based campaigns that basically said: "fuck you. buy playstation".

I hate the logo a lot more than the name. I certainly preferred Neo (who doesn't? Neo just sounds unbelievable cool) but I don't see how PS4 Pro is worse than Ipad Pro or Tony Hawk Pro Skateboarding. We'll look back as the usage of "pro" like we look at "super" today with Super Nintendo and all that from back in the 80s and 90s.

Guess I posted this in the wrong thread, I'll move it here:

So did they show or announce whether the hard drive was removeable like on the slim? I'd probably still be keen to swap the HDD out with the SSD in my current PS4.

So what resolution is this thing upscaling from? 1440p?

Just watched the stream and they didn't get that detailed.

I'll also add that I don't know anyone that buys movies. Everyone is Netflix or Redbox. I don't know if lack of UHD is huge, but I do think it's a miss

Sorry if this has been answered a billion times already, but... does a game have to be reworked to benefit from the improved hardware, or can games with unlocked frame rates benefit from the Pro out of the box?

Everything points to developers needing to patch the games with this extra features that might be better framerate, better graphics, downsample, etc.

They didn't talk about anything that the console will do automatically. Maybe auto downsample is something doable.

Do we know anything about internal vs external PSU?

The last 5 or what playstations had internal PSU. I'm pretty sure they will try to maintain that way.

Looking at the pics on Amazon I can see that they kept the optical port and they finally added a USB port in the back and it looks like it might me 3.0 as it has the SS logo on it

Terrible deal imho. Their giving you $210 AUD for the PS4 and a game. Surely you could sell on gumtree/ebay for more.

Depends if there is a restriction on what type of game. It's actually a decent deal for the convenience, most people don't want to deal with selling something on the internet to some random.

So is the slim 500gb only? if so then the difference between the 2 console is just 50 bucks? shouldn't the slim cost less?

Watching Kinda Funny games, and it does looking at the low amount of games supporting this on launch that there was push back from developers in some form.

Colin was right.

True words. PS2 / TEST / HDD / PSP logos were godlike and paired beautifully with Helvetica

Sorry if this has already been answered but will the PS4 Pro support DisplayPort at all? Rather not get another monitor with HDMI....unless there's some adapter I could use.

The name is perfect...

Most important goal of its name had to be making it clear it's just an upgraded PS4 and in no way splits the the ecosystem...

And to do so in a simple obvious way to random mom buying gifts at Wal-Mart....

So, it's simple and to the point.. pretty much had to be something like Pro or Plus to have the greatest chance of not confusing consumers.

PS4 Neo sounds cool but it's a bit like the Wii U in that, average consumer Joe probably would need to ask someone to understand the difference (or ask someone to open the display case so they can read the fine spec print, which they probably would still need to ask a service rep about).

That said, Neo sounds cooler so I'm still gonna call it that on GAF ;p

Every game from October and onwards will have a Neo mode, the biggest publishers in the industry were at that conference. EA, Ubisoft, and Activision have all praised the Neo. Warner Brothers and Square Enix even went back and patched some older games when they werent required to, SE put THREE different options in Tomb Raider when they only needed 1.

Colin likes going on rants, his argument here is awful.

I am 39 and I honestly don't know of any home I have been into in the last few years that had a movie collection. Everyone just seems to use Netflix/Amazon and VOD.

That said, I only know two homes that have a current gen console either.

Right here. I typically only ever see movies once in a theater, and with streaming services, I don't see the need to buy a movie for 20-30 bucks, unless its something I really liked, and even then its probably only as a collectors item.

You have a link to the exact time that it's actually explained in the conference that every game post october will have a PRO mode?

Or a link to a article?

There's a thread showing whats available at launch that have Pro support.

  • Deus Ex: Mankind Divided
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider
  • Watch Dogs 2
  • Call of Duty: Infinite Warfare
  • Killing Floor 2
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare Remastered
  • Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 (with day one patch)
  • FIFA 17
  • Battlefield 1
  • Dishonored 2
  • Mass Effect Andromeda
  • For Honor
  • Spider-Man
  • Horizon Zero Dawn

Alot of those are post October. So no not every game will have it.

Glad I waited before buying a PS4. I'll definitely be getting this in the near future, but I only hope current PS4 games (at least the more prominent ones) are getting patches for increased performance or graphical fidelity.

*looks furiously at Bloodborne and its CA and frame-pacing issues*

Some thoughts:

- PS4 Pro is a perfect name to distinguish it from the PS4 but also drive home the point that no one is getting left behind

- Performance boost is respectable

- $399 was a surprise to me, I thought they would go for $449.

- No 4k Blu ray support is a surprise. I am sure they have some internal data on this stuff that lead them to this decision but it makes it seem like the console is not very forward thinking....or maybe they are banking on streaming.

I pre-ordered from BB and was surprised to see I also pre-ordered P5 exactly three months prior. I had totally forgotten about doing that.
