Sony closes Evolution Studios (Motorstorm, Driveclub)

They sold 2 million copies. Forza 5 and 6 only sold 2 million copies as well, you think MS is gonna shut down Turn 10??

The Forza analogy doesn't really apply when Forza exists primarily to counter GT and Sony still has Polyphony. Even then, Forza coming to PC is at least partially motivated by expanding the market for it.

I'm pretty sure Forza 5 sold over 2M copies, but that sounds about right for FH2/FM6. Microsoft is bringing future Forza titles to PC though so they have that to hopefully prop up sales.

It sold a little over 2 and only after it was heavily discounted, so did Driveclub (over 2 and also lots of those were discounted to be fair). Forza Horizon 2 sold over 3.

I'm pretty sure Forza 5 sold over 2M copies, but that sounds about right for FH2/FM6. Not to mention many of Driveclub's sales were at a discounted rate (on sale) so the revenue likely isn't equal to Forza games (which never go on sale). Microsoft is bringing future Forza titles to PC though so they have that to hopefully prop up sales.

They also release these games on a two year cycle, so that makes a difference too.

Pretty sure that both WO and MS weren't huge sellers.

And I'm not sure what Sony are doing with Wipeout...seems like Sony are putting everything on GT being their premier racer. Sucks that the only AAA arcade racer left will be Horizon.

To make it their premier/only racer they need to release it. We're nearly three years into the gen and nothing.

Also, I guess this is the death-knell for arcade/sim racers on consoles, now all we have is open-world bullshit with The Crew and Horizon. There's just no room for another PGR :(

Sony taking a page from the Microsoft playbook on this one.

Why do we go through this every time. It's not a Microsoft thing. It's not a Sony thing. It's a business thing. We don't know the internals of the studio, but if it's not working out a company is not going to keep it going. Again, these are not charities, They are business with shareholders. At the end of the day, a company has to do what is best financially for itself.

No, it's not, but Turn 10 also seems to have it's shit in order. You can sure as shit time a Turn 10 Forza to when it comes out. Say what you will about them, they are clearly very well managed as a studio, which is very important to a larger company as a whole.

This is sad news. Between this and Lionhead...sad news.

Hope Evolution guys can find work elsewhere. Maybe some of them will reunite with guys at Playground and make a PGR successor.

3. GT is Sony best selling franchise, of course it will get treated differently than one that fails to reach expectations that Sony may have for it.

Remember what you said here, when you read the first reviews of GT Sport and it will be compared to Forza Motorsport, Project CARS and Assetto Corsa. Personally I'm looking forward to it a lot, but in my heart I already know, that it won't get really good reviews.

HAHAHA!

But seriously a lot fo those studios including Zipper were given chances to make something that sold. Zipper made the costly MAG that never got it's money back. I will say SOCOM 4 was all on SOny because of the network debacle in 2011. But outside of MAG, SOCOM was the only thing those guys made that was decent.

And then were given once last shot with the vita and that fell flat.

Their track design was good and graphically I'd say it's the best looking racing game, ...period. Do a few tweaks to the handling model to make it handle like a PGR, maybe throw in some ridge-racer drifting, then re-use all those absolutely gorgeous DC car models as well as some of the tracks and you've got a game that would get lots of critical praise. Instead GT Sport gets inofficially delayed and what does Sony do with the only other studio that makes racing games for them? They shut it down.

#BuildTheList, Sony, you *%$")#{ @%&8§!!
Forza has more strategic importance for MS than DC has for Sony. Pretty much the whole series was created to battle against GT and win some marketshare for MS in Europe. Sony already has GT and great sales in Europe so DC is just a another game for them.

So we'll get to play GT Sport in 2019 right?

What does reception have to do with what I said?

GT sells, Driveclub didn't. I'm sure Sony cares if it's received well a bit, but when it really sells they won't.

I liked DriveClub when it was finally released and was also hoping for a new Motorstorm with shiny graphics. Sad to hear these news.

Both sold in the millions.
Apocalypse had issues due to launching at the same time Japan had an apocalypse (massive earthquakes and floods) which caused the game to be immediately recalled.

All just bad timing.

GT6 sold about as many copies in its first month as Driveclub. In the end it sold more, but all heavily discounted on a system with a much larger install base.

We will see how good GT Sport with a non-production-car/motorsport and online focus sells, especially when it won't look any better than Forza on weaker hardware or Project CARS on the same hardware.

DriveClub ended up being OK in the end, but let's not forgot the colossal failures that happened at the game's launch and for months after. For a game focused on social racing, having that social aspect broken for months was devastating.

Still, I'd like to see them be given another chance, but let's not pretend there wasn't some writing on the wall here.

DC and Bloodborne are in constant rotation on my ps4- so thanks for nothing to the bag of cunts at Sony who made this decision

I'm sorry for the many talented people that got laid off during this process...

That said, what was anyone expecting? There were many threads complaining about the issues DC had at launch and even more regarding the delay of the Plus version release. This is what happens when a product launch produces that kind of response from the public.

This happens in any industry and will continue to happen. It's just the way businesses works and gaming is not the exception.

Evolution, Liverpool, and Zipper really sucks, and I feel they could all have made comebacks but alas, that'll never be.
989 was pretty much destined to die. SSD took over the only part that could do well.
Incognito's top staff all left to make their own studios so there really wasn't much that could be done there.
BigBig never had much potential and Sony only got them due to their connection with Evolution.

If Bend doesn't hit it out of the park with their next game, they're probably next.

Really sad to hear this news :( Driveclub was great, but Motorstorm Apocalypse is one of my favorite racing game of all time, if not THE best.

Good luck further on!

They made the best racing game of this gen for what?

Bad move from Sony.

I really hope they'll all land on their feet.

WTF SONY!!!! You let go one of the most talented team. These guys were top tier in the industry. How can they let go such talented people. I hope the people are being absorbed in some other team at Sony. Because this doesn't make sense. :(

Turn 10 in the past 3 years released Forza 5 and 6, and Codeveloped Horizon 2.

Evolution was still working on completing DriveClub, that was originally supposed to be a launch game.

There is why Turn 10 stays and Evolution doesn't.

I seriously hope the engine doesn't go to waste and gets further support and games made out of it.

No other game compares to Driveclub on visuals, even on PC I'd argue it is hard to find.
