Sony Exchanging Defective PlayStation 4 Units Immediately

They don't have a teleportation machine. What exactly would you expect them to do?

They are doing pretty much everything they can, I'm just saying I would be pissed if I got a system on launch if this happened. Waiting another week for a working unit would be like torture. It would be great to have a retail exchange policy but since stores don't have extra units it won't work out.

That's partly why I cancelled my preorder. When I get a PS4 I want to be able to take it back to Best Buy the same day if its a dud.

I got a DOA unit on Friday from Amazon, I went to my local Sony store on Saturday and they swapped it out. Had to provide proof of purchase. (Hopped on their POS and did a print out of my Amazon order.

Got a PS4 shirt and was offered $5 dollars off any game/accessory.

Applaud Sony for this effort. However 1% DOA is a bit troubling less than a week after launch, hopefully it has plateaued.

I guess we will really know the actual reliability of the Launch consoles in 1-2 years, when you will then be able to do some real number comparison with the 15% hardware failure being thrown around.

woa, thats unusually great customer service.

I wonder if they really were sabotaged at the factory...

??? That never made sense to begin with. Who actually believed it?

Think a little. A guy claims he jizzed into the thermal paste. This could only lead to units overheating which would just cause them to shut down and go into protect mode after a while. Yet the reports were of consoles not booting properly on first time use.

If the reports of sabotage were true at all it still could not possibly cause what was reported.

Honestly if you believed those reports and believe they might have caused the DOA consoles then slap yourself hard repeatedly for not thinking.

Huh? A failure rate an order of magnitude lower than the standard rate of failure for consumer electronics is a bit troubling? Troubling to whom, Microsoft?

Why is the conversations going like it's 1%. In the report they say less than 1% and Sony gives out an estimate 0.4%. That's 4000 (not 10000). Let's round it to 5000. Not bad at all.

I was a bit worried due to media hype, now that facts are out (or official estimates at least, which beats any other number out there), I'm more confident on getting one on 29th. If I get a bad one, that's just very, verrryyyy bad luck with those odds.

Hope SCEE will have the same replacement policy for anyone who does get a bad one in the EU launch.

There is no standard for DOA failure rate, Ive been searching but no real documented number I could find outside of some forum postings I have found from people who work in manufacturing.

The 15% failure rate is for a 3-4 year life span, not a Out of the Box Failure.

People are also forgetting that this electronic product is under a huge spotlight these days, it's under a microscope by people who are very active and vocal on the internet....

If some new to the market clock radio by Samsung had say a crazy 25% failure rate, you'd probably not hear anything about it online...

But this is Sony and this is The Next Gen PlayStation brand, of course even the allegedly 1% is gonna sound like a big deal and a disaster at a much higher percentage, when people throw a fit and flip tables online about their dud PS4s.

Well given that they use standard HDD's and those have a 5% failure rate it's probably going to be something close to that at least.

I received a DoA unit from Amazon on Friday, called up Sony and they got me a box Monday. Sent it out that same day before the last Express shipment went out, so it arrived at the facility yesterday. According to the rep I talked to on Monday, that means I should receive my new system today. I won't know until I get home from work this afternoon, but I'll try to remember to post an update then (probably while installing the firmware update).

Keep us updated mate.

Why?!?! Couldn't this have happened last week....I stupidly got a refund for my PS4 already. And now I can't find it anywhere.

Good on Sony for doing this, especially the expedited shipping part, that's excellent. They really are handling this console launch fantastically.

.4% was the earliest figure. Now they have more data post-launch and they said "less than 1%" which all but guarantees the number is very close to 1%. If it was still .4%, they'd say so because that's a substantially lower number than 1%.

The reason PR says less than 1% is precisely so people will underestimate the figure, as you are doing.

Just to make it clear, I'm not trying to argue this is a big problem or an unacceptable failure rate. I'm strictly talking about the logic of the presented numbers.

All good here! I went to pick it up today and installed the updates (1.06 and 1.51), everything running smoothly, was super careful when plugging in the HDMI cable just in case, played a bit of KZ: SF and I am getting accustomed to the DS4 (looks great) and firing with L2 and R2 (I think I'm gonna swap to L1 and R1 though).

Bad news is I'm in Mexico (I have PS+ and have been able to get all the games etc from the NA Store) and when I try to access the PS Store it says it's not available in my region (nov 29th?), will see what I can do...

I wish you guys all the best, I got my console through amazon and was concerned about the packaging (inflatable thingies and no more), but it all turned out ok.
