Sony - Eyetoy has more potential than wii remote

Sony is right about not bundling Eyetoy with PS3 - it should never replace sixaxis, rather special games should be created that take advantage of what eyetoy does best.

btw, original Eyetoy Play bundle sold in 2.5 million copies in Europe alone. However, it did not start (major) religion.
 
Just a camera is not enough. Interpreting movement for input is a pretty big gamble.
We'll be needing an input device to use with the camera, like a remote.

Does anyone remember and have a link to the patent that shows a exo-skeletal like glove that can measure the pressure of fingermovement? Or was that just a ruse.

many dont understand what the word potential means... hmm figures...

EyeToy definitely has much more potential because it allows complete freedom. Getting developers to build those games and customers to buy them is another story.

Which is being used in "real" games like the GodFather.

I have issues with the entire some games are real games, and others aren't, but I do see where you're coming from, and all I can say is... wait. Games don't pop up overnight, they do take time. The Wii as a platform was considered a nonstarter, few developers thought it would take off, so all we can do is wait for them to catch up.

Considering how quickly it's selling they'll either catch on, or lose a lot of money.

when i look at how the wii is selling and how it is currently evolving i see similarites to how the DS started with its "gimmicky" stylus. Once the DS became the monster in sales it is, the creativity and usage of the stylus increased exponentially. Besides the other reasons to buy a Nintendo product, i saw the huge sales of the wii and placed my bet that the same thing would happen with the Wiimote... better games then Horses and Cruisin USA will come down in the future
 
I agree that the potential is greater...but the thing is it won't see the developer support that the Wiimote will see, and so will mature much slower.

3rd party maybe, but Sony already has nearly a dozen games in development specifically for the EyeToy on PS3.

i expected miyamoto to unviel his new game that is built around the wiimote at e3. i was expecting something new and fresh like pikmin was. i expected it to be built from the ground up for the wiimote since that's what nintendo was all about.

instead i get wii fit. i'm a skinny guy -- i don't really need wii fit (if anything, i'd benefit from wii-weight train). wii fit will be a commercial success and continue nintendo's growth and dominance. but it does absolutely nothing to further game development utilizing the wiimote.

it just tells me that nintendo isn't interested in furthering real game development. they have a great controller but all they're doing with it are leisure games.

Nah, no reason too.

As long as no one tries to change what is apparently an unchangeable mind we should all be fine. Let him dislike them all he wants, doesn't stop others from enjoying the games he's decided to demonize.

i havn't demonized anything. i've even voiced that i think, in the big picture, leisure games will improve gaming all around and are a good thing for the industry.

personally i'm just more interested in furthering hardcore games. leisure games broaden the industry. i'm more interested in driving forward the industry.

And again, you'll get that.

It's just a matter of how long you're willing to wait. I personally felt that Wii controls in Twilight Princess aside from the generic sword swinging waggle did further Zelda mechanics. The Shield Bash, general aiming, and the Spin attack couldn't have been pulled off better if they'd tried.

I don't agree that Wiimote controls were just haphazardly thrown into Zelda, otherwise they wouldn't have been as easy to pull off as they were. I never really had any problem doing any waggle motion in the game.

The places it's put in Mario make sense without being frivolous, and the same for Metroid. It really comes down to what you expected. I expected what we got, and for that I'm happy.

The Wii has the potential to expand the market, as of right now it's selling mainly to us, with a few "Newbies" thrown in for good measure. Or at least according to Ninty's E3 figure of 90% of Wii owners owning a last gen console are to be believed (and no reason not too).

Funny how the potential of the camera was never used beyond identikit hit the target game compilations until the Wii moved the goalpost for profitability...

I love Eyetoy and singstar - I got both on release day, but only singstar gets played these days - the ET doesn't even get games released for it now as everyone got bored of its one dimensional novelty.

The technology has been out for at least 4 years now and doesn't have a title that grabs people like WiiSports +WiiMote and custom Miis do.

Publicizing the truism that your 4 year old camera has completely wasted its head-start and potential, and let the competition steal your market is a very, very Sony thing to do.

The only thing I would like to mention is how Wii Fit goes against the idea of the Wii, in that the remote is supposed to be all serving. I find it weird that some people are hailing that as the wonder of the Wii when it is a completely separate peripheral driven product. /random rant

Modern image processing can already interpret movement and identify features such as faces. Even cheap cameras have a limited form of auto-focus and work quite well considering what is available on the camera.

In fact, it's not hard to come up with something that can interpret gestures and process them as inputs. The only limiting factors, as with all continuous image processing, is the resolution and speed of the camera, as well as how much processing power is available.

EyeToy could never be both those things for the PS3, unless they sold a $250 version that came with the camera and could be trivially controlled by universally understood gestures (which don't exist)
 
After playing both the wii and The Eye of Judgment I'd have to say that EyeToy brings the sense of wonder far better than the air mouse that is the wiimote.

Experience may differ of course. But at the EoJ demo jaws were dropping.

Is the interactivity as good as they make it seem? Can you like pet your monsters and stuff like that? That part seemed a bit faked :p
 
How do you point and shoot with the PS Eye? You fake a gun with your hands and then say Bam! Bam! BambambambamBAM! ? I mean, it has a mic built in...

Not really, the Wii remote is a standard controller, it's not really the same thing. The Wii Balance Board however is a better match for comparison, it doesn't come with the system, it's a peripheral like the Eye Toy. And the Eye Toy is also very good for fitness applications, but once again the WBB can give you more palpable results.

ALSO, your premise is again false, since EyeToy has ALREADY been a success from a sales perspective and it does not currently have tactile simulation. But in its current state it just has to be used for games that don't need that tactile response, since not all games do.

Amirox, do you have any data on how many Eyetoy are there in the world ? I know that European have lots of Eyetoy, while Japanese and American don't really dig it. But I don't have any estimate of it's sales figures. Is it 10 Million ? 5 Million ? 20 Million ?

Perhaps if CVG had put a question to Miyaki asking him to compare sales potential, he might have acknowledged all that, but since they apparently asked him about "motion tracking opportunities" instead, he obviously didn't. No need to get defensive about his comment and try to move the goalposts as a result.
 
I think they both have their advantages and disadvantages. So far though, we haven't seen much use for the Eyetoy outside of mini-games and the such. I did however manage to get Eyetoy: Antigrav for a cheap price and it's actually quite fun. Probably the first 'real' Eyetoy game, it's a shame we haven't seen more like it. It has a few problems, but with the improved PS3 Eyetoy, they should be able to create something that works even better. It's not a replacement for an actual controller by any means, but it does have the ability to work well with some genres.

How the hell is the game system? I mean how it work? I know you place this funny card on the mat, character appears then interact with another. But what about stats or abilities of the card. The most important thing is how the hell would I know that the other player wont cheat by choosing the card straight from under the deck instead of dealing one from the top?

Good technology. Gameplay wisethere is no innovation at all.
 
I believe it's possible.... I also believe, much like Little Big Planet, if Eye of the Beholder was created by Nintendo, all would shout from the rooftops the second coming is here...

Agreed, Aqua Vita looks pretty enough, but Creature Feature just looks too simplistic. Trials of Topoq has the most potential.

They explained all of this before...it wont be easy to cheat
