Sony files are being shared using computer servers owned by Sonys PlayStation Network

How anyone can trust their data onto Sony is beyond me at this point.

Note: That is the only report so far which brought up the connection. North Korea denied the attack. Normally they claimed responsibility for bragging rights.

No, I don't think so. I'm pretty sure most of the data that is being leaked is related to some employees.

Very private data. The hack is multiple times worse than 2011, but not for the customer.

No state claims responsibility for bragging rights...... you deny till the end of time whether evidence is presented against your or not.

State sponsored hacking can be used to do much more harm - you can fuck up water dams, even nuclear power plants depending on the security, operational structure of the plant (which continues to evolve to avoid this) among other things...... it's no joke.

You'd really think Sony'd of tightened the hatches on the ship after the last time. Maybe they've been partying too hard ahead of the PSX event.
Is there even something they could have done though?
Even Homeland Security is involved and it seems like this is the most devastating hack ever directed at a company on US soil.

If N. Korea really is behind this then they need to learn to take a joke. The movie is a comedy. It's supposed to be funny. It's not an act of war.

What do you mean "trust their data"?
There is no security breach here as far as we know. No personal info has been revealed.

Maybe Sony knows that the hackers know all the games in the works at world wide studios, so Sony wants to come before the leaks and announce everything at PSX.

Erm, wrong. North Korea did, but not for this. The hacker group Guardians of Peace did, which seems the far more likely scenario.

To quote Sony:

It is now apparent that a large amount of confidential Sony Pictures Entertainment data has been stolen by the cyber attackers, including personnel information and business documents. This is the result of a brazen attack on our company, our employees and our business partners. This theft of Sony materials and the release of employee and other information are malicious criminal acts, and we are working closely with law enforcement.

The privacy and security of our employees are of real concern to us, and we are deeply saddened at this concerted effort to do damage to our company, undermine our morale, and discourage us. We are enormously proud of the resilience you have all shown in the face of this attack. The company is as busy as ever, and our business continues to move forward, thanks to your great efforts.

Not gonna lie, first thing I thought after reading the post

"Where are the video game trailer leaks?"

I can't wait until this weekend.
But I will.

Lol why in the hell would you believe North Korea.

Not even a cpl days ago they blamed the U.S. for the Ebola virus

It is about likeliness. This is one of the biggest hacks in history. NK doesn't have the capabilities for that, but till now, they loved to claim responsibility. They denied responsibility. The connection was brought by one single report. On top of that, we have one hacker group claiming responsibility. Lets say NK is unlikely.

North Korea has the capacity to carry out sophisticated hack attacks that your typical hacker group can not. Are they on the same level as the Chinesse, Russians, Germans, U.S? Nope. That does not mean they can't inflict serious damage....

It's weapon these days.

Beg your pardon?

They can create nukes but they don't have the capacity to hack servers in a major scale?

Even Cuba can.

'Sony-pocalypse': Why the Sony hack is one of the worst hacks ever

We have heard that Sony Pictures was hacked, and basically shut down recently.

One ting that seemed odd was this part of the linked article...

"All of this is getting posted publicly in huge batches of computer files on sites like Pastebin.com and illegal file-sharing websites. Security researcher Dan Tentler has found that the files are being shared using computer servers owned by Sony's PlayStation Network -- adding insult to injury."

Wait, Sony's PSN network? That is alarming to say the least. Does that mean there are open torrents or other items running on the same server infrastructure we are gaming on with our playstations?

Are you an expert in IT? Or your just posting because? You do know what servers are for right?
Wouldn't be new to Sony... pirates have been downloading PSN games directly from Sony's servers for a long time.

Really...tell us more.

I don't understand how Sony has Naughty Dog and SN Systems at their disposal, yet can't figure out how to secure PSN servers.

Is game programming and tools programming that much different from server programming, or is this just how Sony does things when it isn't manufacturing televisions and walkman disc players anymore?

2013 South Korea

They couldn't deny or confirm a cpl days ago. It's stupid to believe North Korea.

Computer security is different enough from game programming that being good at one won't necessarily be useful in the other. Sony is also more known to be a hardware company and not a software company as we have seen in the past with other issues they have had. What really seems to be the issue is bad communication between different branches, having a constant target on them and not being able to strengthen their defense quick enough

Yes. Completely. Like the difference between building a house and car and building a plane. Kind of the same but not really.

How the fuck do you think they managed to get all this info and release a couple movies that haven't hit theaters yet if there wasn't a security breach - even if that was just someone walking out with it all on a HDD.

It's very different. Being able to build a house doesn't make you a locksmith, no? And often times the vulnerabilities exploited are contained in 3rd party code like libraries or middleware. Don't console games have poor anti-cheat protection too?

*tsk* *tsk*

Sony really needs to beef things up.

They're paying for and giving away too many damn games on PS+ when that money could be going towards better PSN in general. At this point though, I think PSN is a lost cause and they'll just have to nurse it home for the next decade and a half until PlayStation is no more.

at some point you will realize that spe and sne are not same companies/

Are you an expert in IT? Or your just posting because? You do know what servers are for right?
.

Getting into files servers or other data that hold data files like personal social security information is one thing. These are/should not be the same servers that run games on PSN. In fact they should be secured entirely separate. If the hackers got into Sony Pictures files, and then turned around and are using the PSN servers to host the files, that is a sign they are not secure at all and in fact don't have a handle on things. You would not expect the same servers you are playing games on to also host the company's top secret information, not even close. It's not even same department within Sony.

It really is that simple.

at some point you will realize that spe and sne are not same companies/

At some point you will realize I never claimed they are the same. But first, notice something about the headline? Sony files are being shared using computer servers owned by Sonys PlayStation Network

At this point I'd consider Sony criminally negligent regarding their lack of security. Who on earth would trust them with their personal info anymore?

With the severity of this I'm starting to think this was an inside job.

This is Sony Pictures, not Sony Entertainment Network/PSN. And of course, Amazon cloud, not "Sony network" really.

It is still the same parent company, if Sony is to big to have competent security then they should be broken up into smaller pieces.

FYI, I don't know if this is a coincidence or not re: the big hack, but I got a call about fraudulent charges to my Sony Rewards Capital One Visa card last week. I cancelled the card instead of getting it replaced, fuck it.

Did anybody else with a Sony Rewards Capital One Visa have an issue?

Good grief. Sony needs to hire some competent OS guys who knows what they're doing.

How anyone can trust their data onto Sony is beyond me at this point.

And that's why I don't put any of my real information down, especially not my debit card info.

If I want to pay for something, I'll either use prepaid cards instead, or go on Amazon & buy 12 month PS+ subscriptions & PS Store Gift Cards through digital codes.

Are we looking at another 2011 style hack again with personal information getting out there?

Lots of extremely sensitive personal information has been leaked already, but it's Sony's employees who are suffering this time, not their customers. At least so far.

How the fuck do you think they managed to get all this info and release a couple movies that haven't hit theaters yet if there wasn't a security breach - even if that was just someone walking out with it all on a HDD.
I'm talking about PSN.

You would think so. I am sure they made adjustments and consulted experts before, but at this point it needs to become a paramount priority. This will be the catalyst for them to finally, truly get their shift together.

If the PSN hack wasn't enough for them to get their shit together than nothing will. Also weren't Sony held to some security regulating standards after the PSN Consumer hack? If you can't detect 100TB being copied from your network you have failed at basic security.

They probably mean Sony Entertainment Network, of which PSN is a part of. It's not a stretch to imagine the hackers got into that when they pretty comprehensively hacked SPE.

This screams to me disgruntled employee being a cunt / inside hack, rather than a hack from outside.

At this point I'd consider Sony criminally negligent regarding their lack of security. Who on earth would trust them with their personal info anymore?
What do you know about Sonys security measures? Just because they got hacked it doesn't mean they are incompetent. We don't know how skilled the hackers are or if it's an inside job. Stop blaming the victim.

Is there even something they could have done though?

Any component network should be setup to detect and alert when moving 100TB worth of data across it. Even if it was an inside job 100TB worth of data was copied through their network and no one at Sony noticed.

Note: That is the only report so far which brought up the connection. North Korea denied the attack. Normally they claimed responsibility for bragging rights.
Didn't they also deny being responsible for hacking into South Korean banks and TV networks last time. I read that hack had similar code to what was used in this attack.

Pretty sure they also denied sinking SK ships and stuff that the rest of the world blame them for as well.

Security is extraordinarily difficult. You can beef up your security but it is all useless when you have humans - all it takes is someone to click on a link or plug in a compromised usb stick.

Regarding this specific hack, there are rumors it may have been an inside job by a disgruntled employee.

Uhh actually it does, you can't move or copy 100TB worth of data on any network that has any form of competent security without someone noticing. It is obvious they did not learn a thing and have not reformed their Security from the PSN hack.

It is a big media company. I'm sure Sony pictures has terabytes of data moving in and out of their Network as part of their daily operations.

So glad you know exactly what happened here. Can you tell us how Sony can improve their security since you're such an expert?
Personally I know jack shit about servers and security and firewalls. That's why I don't go around acting like I know better than Sonys security team.

All I know is that Sony is the victim here. If there was a lack of security due to Sony being cheap or something, I'm sure we'll find out. So let's hold off on accusing Sony of incompetence for a little while longer and wait and see how this turns out.
